This is great news, no matter who we bring in as marquee there is no guarantee on how they will play, while with Mooy we know what we're getting and it's better than any marquee has delivered for us so he is well worth the marquee spot.

But TBH I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed in Mooy for throwing away his career for money.

We essentially fell for mooys bluff, he could have stayed under the cap

So we try and save costs and potentially unsettle Mooy a little cos he feels under appreciated when that other bloke is getting $500k to do nothing. I would rather pay Mooy good money to keep performing and leave no room for any sort of questioning as to whether we as a club truly value him.

He could have but why would it make sense to retain him within the cap? There's no competing Australian marquee option and moving him out of the cap frees up a considerable amount of money for other Australian signings

Not necessarily if he gets another season with regular game time rather than going and sitting on the bench.

He's only 24 - still enough time to push for a title here, earn good coin, dominate the league, get more noticed and get a better gig overseas and still have 5-7 years to get himself established overseas. Not to mention his missus is having a kid, gives him time to be with the baby for the next 1.5 years so she's not doing it on her own!

AM will be 25 before the season starts. IMO he's made a very sound decision to stick with us. So many Australian players go overseas and become bench-warmers. And if he really shines there's a possibility of a season or two in New York along the way.

FOX SPORTS

Melbourne City midfielder Aaron Mooy has signed a hugely improved deal to stay at the club, declining offers from overseas to stay in the A-League. City’s players were told on Monday that Mooy would reject advances reported to be from the Middle East and Europe, with City’s backers determined to keep a player who has blossomed since moving from the Wanderers.

It’s believed the multi-million-dollar package will keep Mooy at City for at least the next three years.

Well I got the Captain part wrong, but the three years correct. When Josh K left and Mooy took Murdocas number, it had to be him staying because we had the Aus marquee spot free and could offer any money. Thank you Josh K for this great signing!

These are the benefits that CFG bring, if we were still owned by the monkeys he would have got sold late last year for 600k

Gotta say its pretty exciting that we can offer this kinda money to him. Unless he hit the top-flight somewhere in Europe (which would take years if it even did happen) there is no way he would ever earn that kind of money over there. Its a better option for him to stay in Melbourne than go to Europe. Would never have happened under Heart ownership.

I know a lot of members still have there doubts about the CFG, when I see it I just laugh and think of Melbourne Hearts management and footballing decisions in the past.

Thinking of how we would have looked in 2024/2025 under Heart, Heart/Sth Heart/Geelong or probably bust... To what the CFG will turn us into come there 10th season in control is honesty a dream.

I still think today like I did the day of the take over, why us? What were the chances the richest football club owners in the world would come and buy our little club in Melbourne. The City fans were so right from day one in saying "Just hang on to the rails and enjoy the ride." Because so far it's been the best football ride and looks like getting better and better as the seasons tick over.

I get what you're saying, but its been far from the "best football ride" we still lost the colours that a lot of people loved, we've had a failed Villa stint, a failed marquee and still have JVS. it's been very good and getting better, but far from perfect.

Just want to clarify, confirmed signed for 3 years, is that also confirmed Marquee for 3 years ?

Melbourne City FC can announce midfielder Aaron Mooy has re-signed for the Club on a new three-year deal which will see him elevated to the marquee position for the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season.

Just wondering

Marquee is nominated prior to each season. So probably, but not necessarily.

Agree with bt50, and my interpretation of the Club's statement is not strictly what it says. But it would be hard to see him being a marquee for one season and then brought inside the cap for another. However that would not be impossible, because I expect players such as Williams, Brown, Kisnorbo and Hughes to be released at the end of 2015/16 and that might allow Mooy to come back inside the cap again.

No more excuses left for JVS now with the squad that we have especially when you look at some of the stuff going on at a lot of the other clubs in such a small league.

Newy, CCM, and Brisbane: All with serious money issues.

WSW: Basically has had to have a complete overhaul of its lists and problems between the new owners and those staff remaining from the original seasons.

Adelaide: Has suffered major loss in terms of a Coach leaving who was a pivotal figure at the club and the driving force behind its culture.

Perth: Is still dealing with the aftershock of the salary cap crises.

Only three other clubs in MV, SFC and Wellington have had as stable off seasons as we have and none have strengthened there squads anywhere near as well as we have... some of the above with issues will defy the odds but anything but Top Four is unacceptable now.

Agree with your expectations but I would argue that MelbCity greatly strengthened the squad because they started from a lower base.

If you don't set a stretch target then you won't get there. Setting a target that you think you can achieve easily is just a cop-out. We should always aim to win the Premier's Plate, every season, irrespective of anything else.

I still think MV and Sydney are the teams to beat, but doesn't mean to say we should not set the Premiership as where we want to be.

we've got a bigger specialist in failure than Wenger in charge. Will finish 5th and lose in the semis again. Then hopefully CFG wake the fuck up and get rid of the Dutch clown

Don't think I'll last until then, my brain will explode when 5 games into the season everyone claims our squad isn't good enough to make finals.

Great for Mooy's signing to be officially announced. IMO it's the best outcome for both the club and the player (at least for the next 2 or 3 years. Then after that Mooy can move to a respectable European club and quite possibly be a regular starter).

Excellent to see Mooy's keenness to remain at Melbourne City with the long term contract, and it's a real plus to see CFG breakout the checkbook to re-sign Mooy. The visitors across town didn't have the money to keep Milligan around, so it's a real statement that Melbourne City is willing to pay big money to keep one of our most important players, and other Australian footballers will take notice of the significant amount of pay Melbourne City can offer Australian players.

Undoubtedly Melbourne City should finish better than top 4 next season. The way things and the team are shaping up I'd say some silverware or perhaps a finals appearance should be the expectations upon the club and club staff next season. So hopefully everyone at the club is aiming big, thinking big and talking big heading into the season, because having low expectations heading into the season won't be good enough.
