GOALPOSTS SHIFT FOR MICK’S THROUGH BALL

SCOTT GULLAN

MAY 28, 2015

THE last time Mick Malthouse got the heave-ho he held serious discussions about turning his focus to soccer.

Unfortunately as he contemplates unemployment this time around, those doors to the world game have been closed.

When Malthouse left Collingwood his manager, Peter Sidwell, who also happened to be the Melbourne Heart chairman, was keen to get his man involved in the fledgling club.

The AFL legend spent a lot of time with Heart coach John Aloisi who was open to Malthouse joining the team’s coaching staff.

A plan was even put in place to build an academy at Latrobe University in Bundoora bearing Malthouse and Aloisi’s name.

But then Carlton came knocking with $1 million a year and soccer was put on hold.

Aloisi still kept in touch and regularly sought counsel from Malthouse although it didn’t do him much good given he was sacked by the Heart in 2013.

Ironically, on the day Malthouse was sacked from Carllton Aloisi was getting his second chance, being named as Brisbane Roar coach.

The biggest winner out of the whole scenario was Sidwell who alongwith his fellow board members made a tidy profit of more than $6 million when they sold the club to the owners of Manchester City.

Anyone else see in today's HS about how Peter Sidwell apparently was very close to getting Mick Malthouse over to Heart as an assistant coach under Aloisi, before he decided to take up the Carlton offer?

Sounds kind of nice in theory, but adding non-football people to an already very inexperienced coaching staff? Wow, no wonder we never had a foothold in the city.

I don't know much about AFL but if Malthouse thought that there were problems with the Carlton board imagine what he would have thought about Heart?

Government wants Victory and City invited to the next big dance against Euro giants

July 14, 2015

Michael Lynch

Victorian Sports Minister John Eren says he will insist on either Melbourne Victory or Melbourne City being involved in the next high-profile soccer tournament staged in the state.

The International Champions Cup takes place between July 18 and 24 and involves three of the best-known teams in the world: Real Madrid, Manchester City and Roma.

Although the tournament, being held at the MCG, has attracted investment from the state government's Major Events Company, neither City nor Victory will take on any of the soccer giants at one of the world's most famous venues.

In fact City is having to travel to the Gold Coast to play Manchester City, the biggest club in the City Football Group, in a pre-season warm-up match on Saturday as none of the participants is allowed to play in Melbourne before the tournament kicks off.

Eren says there was little the government could do given the deal to sign off on the ICC was written by its predecessor.

"I am very much concentrated on local clubs," he said. "Victory and City are very important to football for us. Clearly Melbourne Victory are the champions of the A League, and I certainly want them involved with major clubs like these European clubs coming.

"This was negotiated before our time. There's a new kid in town and I would be wanting to make sure any future dealings we have would involve our local clubs."

"I would insist upon involving a local team. There are situations which we did not control. All we know is what the [then] government signed up to is what we are getting," Eren said.

However, he said that the Socceroos were very much on the present government's agenda.

"Watch this space. As I have indicted, I, having a football background, have concentrated on the world game to make sure it's front and centre for us. It is the fastest growing game in the nation. All of these games will put a further spotlight on this game. As a government we will be concentrating very much on making sure that football is front and centre.

"We will try to negotiate the best outcome with the FFA [over Socceroos matches]. I have had a number of conversations with David Gallop and Frank [Lowy] himself about how we can participate more in football.

"We have the infrastructure, we have proven with the Asian Cup that we do it really well."

International Champions Cup: Tournament will be in Australia for next three years but may not be in Melbourne

MATT WINDLEY

JULY 14, 2015

THE International Champions Cup is set to return to Australia for the next three years, but not necessarily to Melbourne.

The MCG will host Real Madrid, AS Roma and Manchester City in three matches across eight days starting Saturday and the Victorian government is in talks with TLA Worldwide and Nine Live, who brought the tournament here, about its future.

More than 200,000 tickets have so far been sold for the matches, but Bart Campbell, chairman of TLA, said how next year’s event would look and where it would be played is still up in the air.

Campbell did say, however, that, like the tournament’s North American arm — which is currently in its third year — A-League teams such as Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City could be invited to play against European giants in the coming years.

“We’ve committed to the tournament for four years,” Campbell told the Herald Sun.

“That’s Australia-wide and we’re in discussion with governments about where it may be held. So within that context, if Melbourne thought it was a good thing then we’re very happy to continue those discussions.

“The theory in America was start with international teams, create an annual event on the calendar, and then over time as you expand the format, introduce local teams so that you’ve kind of got the best of both worlds.

“And if you look at the Asian format, there’s three teams in China, three teams in Melbourne, it may be possible over time to expand that to four teams per group with a final between those two pools.”

Speaking at a welcome ceremony for Real Madrid yesterday at AAMI Park, Victorian sports minister John Eren said major events are worth $1.8 billion to the state’s economy.

“That’s a significant amount of economic activity,” Eren said.

“That’s why we are very focused on making sure that whenever we have events such as these, they are the best events.”

Campbell said he was determined to see the tournament have a lasting impact on the sport in Australia.

“There is a real aspiration that this can help lift the professional game in this country by showing what the best looks like,” Campbell said.

“And when, within that, Channel 9 have entered the broadcasting of football rights in this market.

“Does that present an opportunity to enter in to the next negotiations (for A-League TV rights)? I don’t know. But surely if that did transpire then that would be a good legacy for the tournament to leave, to give nationwide free to air coverage on a big commercial network.”

I wouldn't mind Angus coming here rather than Sorenson.

In my view he will take over from Joe Hart eventually.

Would be good experience for him to play here.

Fighting crime: Melbourne City runs soccer program for at-risk youth in Sunshine

September 8, 2015

Tammy Mills

A soccer program run by Melbourne City Football Club for at-risk youth in Melbourne's west is among 109 crime prevention grants announced by the state government on Tuesday.

More than $800,000 has been allocated in $5000 to $10,000 grants across Victoria to fund crime prevention education, installation of security measures, as well as outreach programs like City Soccer in Sunshine.

City Soccer will begin in January at a parkland beside the revitalised Sunshine train station and is aimed at attracting disengaged youth.

Every Friday night, local football club coaches along with Melbourne City players, police and Brimbank City Council staff will run games and hold barbecues for teenagers who are either referred to the program from community groups or who are passing by the station.

"It's breaking down the barriers for young boys and girls at-risk and give them some fun things to do in a non-threatening environment," Melbourne City chief executive Scott Munn said.

"This area is renowned for its football teams; there are wonderful football clubs in the area that are steeped in tradition, our own club has players that have grown up here, went to school here and now have professional football careers. It's about giving anyone at any level an opportunity to run around and have a kick."

Teenagers will be rewarded with tickets to Melbourne City home games along with shoes and clothing donated from professional players.

Sunshine sits in the Brimbank local government area, which recorded the third-highest crime rate in 2014-2015. The suburb is also part of the "red zone" north west region, so dubbed by police due to its level of offences.

Parliamentary Secretary for Justice Ben Carroll said funding seemingly small projects like City Soccer can go some way in dropping the statistics and stigma.

"It's such a small amount of money, but you can get a little bit of leverage into different parts of the community and it actually works," he said.

The member for Niddrie is completing a review of the Department of Justice's community crime prevention programs. The review is due to report by September 30.

Thanks Murf.

I'm proud to support this club when I read items like that. Anything to help young people make good decisions in life is to be welcomed.

Where as our rivals want to have arrangements with community clubs restricted to just a few and have other bright ideas like getting the FFV to fund their women's team (despite being easily able to afford it).

someone on here made the point that they have a cousin or a cousins freind or something who is a victory supporter but chose to sign for the city youth team becausw of the setup we have compared to what victory have and what they do with local clubs. Imo thats pretty telling

Good initiative by the club, but really wouldn't this just be searching for potential future talent while also making the club gain a good image?

If a kid is only getting their first Football coaching at the age when they are old enough to be considered "disaffected youth"  then they're never going to make it at A-League level.

Exactly.  I'm sure they won't knock back a superstar if they find one, but the odds of that being either:

  • a teenager referred to you by the police or
  • someone who is "passing by the station"

are probably not that high.

Not really headlines but a good initiative in the end. Winners of the cup get a trip to Manchester to take on their kids.

It's shit like this that will be the major benefits of the CFG relationship which will hopefully get the kids interested in us

Melbourne City can win A-League: Michael Zullo

If Michael Zullo's statement of intent is anything to go by, Melbourne City's next generation of A-League players are an ambitious bunch.

Zullo is one of 10 additions to the City squad for the upcoming season, joining from Dutch club Utrecht after impressing in a loan deal with Adelaide United.

The left back, who can operate as a winger, says the quality of the squad put together by John van 't Schip means they'll be shooting for the stars in the season ahead.

"If we can keep our strongest eleven out there week after week, I think we can really have a good crack at the league," he said.

"We have to have one of the strongest XIs in the A-League.

"The key for us is to keep everyone fit and on the park ... I don't see any reason why we can't aim to win the league."

Zullo, 27, who has 10 Socceroos caps to his name, identified fellow international Ivan Franjic and French winger Harry Novillo as key contributors to a title push.

Joining the trio as new faces at City this term are former English Premier League pair Thomas Sorenson and Aaron Hughes, young forwards Steve Kuzmunovski, Corey Gameiro and Wade Dekker as well as Uruguayan attacker Bruno Fornaroli and Jason Trifiro.

But before their A-League assault begins in three weeks with a trip to Sydney FC, City continue their FFA Cup ride with a quarter-final against neighbours Heidelberg United next Tuesday.

At Heidelberg's Olympic Village ground, they'll play a match closer to their Bundoora base than ever before.

But Zullo says it will feel like an away match given the depth of support for grassroots clubs.

"That's the beauty of the FFA Cup, you get to play at these local grounds," he said.

"People will just take it as a given that an A-League club will beat a state league club but it's not really the way ... it can be a very tough challenge."

I got Hughes

How were cricket and afl not options for favourite sports? That question turned into, "which of these sports do you dislike the least?"

Probably because it's all about matching you to a player, so those answers probably come from the players responses to the same questions.

Hey Murf, just wondering...

Where did this survey actually come from? Was it from the club or a 3rd party site?

I have a feeling completing this will result in my email Junk folder getting a good workout.

This survey is actually in the latest email, which also mentions the City Live event and Episode 2 of 'Team Mates'. It's down the bottom.

It's pleasing to see the club is generating some more media and content for members & supporters. Also the 'Team Mates' series of videos (with Mauk and Garuccio, and Kuzmanovski and Marino) is another sign of this recent development.

I'd still like to see Melbourne City get a Youtube channel similar to Man City though
