Tando Velaphi

Recommended Posts

Best/most loyal servant of the club? Tando is easily one of the most committed and professional players to wear the club jersey. Up there with Behich, and will be as fondly remembered as Engelaar in my book.

If this club can continue to sign up players as committed and as loyal as Tando then this club's on the right track.

I think he'll have to settle for cult hero, just didn't do enough on the pitch to become a legend

Cult hero is about where he's at. People throw "club legend" around too easily.

There's only three or four club legends in the whole of the A-league imo.

Succinct definition please.

Well the term is pretty self-explanatory. What's more debatable is the criteria to be one.

For me, for someone to be a club legend they have to have:

Given a club their best years, been there for at least six seasons, had a notable contribution to the team and club, shown a clear love for the team and preferably been a big part in winning things with the club.

Players that were only there for a year or two but are extremely popular with the fans are cult heroes for me. Tando, Sibon, Engelaar etc.

Club Legend should be reserved for that next level. People like Thompson, Muscat, Hutchinson and maybe Broich.

I believe any club legend has to contribute to more then 6 years at the club, and as people have mentioned they have to be part of something, not just sitting on the bench for 6 six years.

That's I think since the A League is still young there isn't any stand out club legends, the closest ones would have to be Hutchinson and A.Thompson

To be honest I don't think you can actually have a criteria for a club legend (although I agree Tando falls in the cult hero category).

If Trifiro scored a hattrick in a winning Grand Final for us I'm pretty sure that contribution would deserve club legend status.

Signed with J-League club Shonan Bellmare, pending a medical:

Seems to be a 2 year deal.

Shonan Bellmare got promoted from J-League 2 in 2014 and finished 10th in the J-League in 2015.

The club's website is indicating that the contract is pending a medical which we can safely assume that he will pass. It does not mention contract length. Also found out that Tando has the middle name of Yuji.

Club's stadium holds 15100. Hiratsuka is a sleepy, green area of Kanagawa prefecture. Maybe a little quiet but at least he won't be living in the concrete jungle of Yokohama.

Surely this can't be a top standard professional Football Club...

Edit: i thought Etihad was bad for viewing.

Hiratsuka is the equivalent of a small country town such as Traralgon with a large multisport complex. Outside of the railway station precinct there aren't many tall buildings, no apartment blocks, stand alone town houses with their own car parking space, there is street vegetation. Definite indication of a small country town/village. Mind you once I worked with a bloke who came from a boring small village of 100,000 people, so its all relative.
