From: Five players who could boost Bafana in 2020

Kearyn Baccus

“He’s injured,” was Ntseki’s response after the Sudan game when asked if he was still interested in calling up Kearyn Baccus, who has already made an impression in the Absa Premiership since signing for Kaizer Chiefs this season. Baccus was born in Durban, though this is his first stint in the PSL, having grown up in Australia. He did play for the Australian Under-17 team, but has not played for the senior side and so would be available for Bafana. Baccus is another defensive midfielder, who can also get forward, though at 28 years-old, like with Jali, age is not completely on his side. In the short-term, however, Ntseki may feel like taking a punt on a player who could well return from injury for Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout semifinals on Sunday.

Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki has revealed that he was monitoring in-form Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kearyn Baccus with the view of bringing him into the national team setup.
Baccus, who was born in Durban but grew up in Australia, has been a revelation at Chiefs since joining Amakhosi from Melbourne City at the beginning of the season.

The 27-year-old has played for Australia at junior levels, but has indicated that he is keen to play for South Africa.

“Last week I was also made aware that a Kaizer Chiefs player (Baccus) also qualifies to play for South Africa. So, the monitoring and the profiling has already started to see when to bring him in,” Ntseki told reporters.

“We should bring him in with that understanding to say, ‘What value is he going to add to the team?’.

“Everybody who raises up his hand and say, ‘I want to play for Bafana’, and we will do the right thing. Profiling, assessing and then doing the right observation that we needed to do to bring the player over,” said Ntseki

This is like the time the Socceroos were giving anyone who played in Europe with Australian heritage a cap, Max Vieiri anyone?

McGree again. Imagine Brillante, McGree, Metcalfe as your midfield.

Just goes to show how much of a fool Joyce is. I’m happy for Riley though. I remember watching him at Adelaide the first time and thinking he’d be able to make it in a big European league. Glad he’s got his career back on track.

Don't forget he was actually on loan to us for just the one season (from Bruges/Brugge), rather than contracted directly to us. Makes it a little harder to keep a player in such circumstances.

Well that’s true, but I think we are more down on Joyce for playing the bloke on the wing. Just weird.

Incidentally Adelaide paid a (small) transfer fee to pick him up. Their first ever and right now those that made that decision would be congratulating themselves on their astuteness.

Erik Paartalu played the full 90 and picked up a yellow in Bengaluru's 1-1 draw with Hyderabad in India. It's a bit of an A-League dumping ground with ex WSW player Dimas Delgado his partner in centre midfield. Ex Sydney striker Bobo played 63 minutes for Hyderabad following his release from his contract in Turkey in October, crazy that the Mariners were courting Jair at the same time Bobo was available and would've likely had his agent putting feelers out for a return to Australia.

Who can forget the "Paartalu Derby?" What a night that was!

I can't see Bobo being cheap and the Mariners have tended to stay away marquee players (nevermind the really expensive ones)

The A-League simply can't compete with the money sloshing around in India, China and Japan. There are mega-rich people in those countries. All we can hope to do is develop our own players (and stop selling them off for literally peanuts) and make some astute picks in areas such as South America and hope to on-sell.

Even when we do have mega-rich owners (e.g. CFG) it seems as though the investment return on football is assessed as poor and they simply won't spend money on top marquee players.

Bart sent off this morning in a 1-1 draw with OFI Crete. He copped a yellow on 49 minutes, followed by a 2nd yellow on 70 minutes. He didn't play on the weekend just gone, pretty sure it was due to the suspension for accumulating 5 yellow cards already. Clearly he's being discriminated against and needs to come back ASAP.

I mean when you think about it, with Florian not playing we have been scoring goals but also conceding heaps too. If rumours are true that we're looking to offload him, would signing Bart (which I know won't happen) sure-up our defense?

Looks like Brattan is heading to Brisbane at the end of the season. Macarthur are interested too but he wants to go back home.

Wonder if all those flog Sydney supporters still think they got the better end of the Brattan/Brillante exchange.

If Messi has scored that you’d see it on highlights for decades. Unbelievable goal

If you have not seen the whole game is one that shows what class Mooy is.

Still unbelievable knowing we had him for so long! And the success he has gone on the work hard to achieve. What a guy!

Connor Chapman is leaving Western United to join K2 side Daejeon Citizen FC.

FWIW I think we'll be facing WU next week at a good time. They have a number of key players out with injury, and lost two more yesterday during the match. Their defence is decimated, and they were bobbins yesterday against a good Phoenix side.

Yes we need to get these wins if we are going to stay within distance of Sydney. It also means WU are vulnerable to other teams in their current circumstances so essential to get the 3 points. Dean will be back 😓  !!  Metcalfe, Glover, Najjarine and Genreau away with Olyroos. So we need to get the starting XI firing.

Funny, I would have said the Tards were worse than bobbins when they played the Nix the game / round before last week's Xmas Derby 😞

Achilleas Poungouras continues to shine at Panathinaikos, prompting John van ‘t Schip to consider the 24-year-old centre-back for the Greek national team squad in the March friendlies.

Watch LIVE GREEK TV including full GREEK SPORTS coverage with Go Greek TV!

After several years in the wilderness on the Ethniki front, Panathinaikos are slowly gaining a significant representation in Greece's national football team, as John van 't Schip (JVS) looks to blood in the next generation. The next player in line is Achilleas Poungouras, undoubtedly the most improved player at Panathinaikos this season.

The 24-year-old centre-back has been colossal for the Greens this season and is firmly in JVS's plans for the future. According to reports, the Dutchman travelled to Crete to watch the former PAOK man as the Greens drew 1-1 at OFI in December, even though he missed the match due to injury.

Panathinaikos currently sit in seventh place, mainly due to a slow start to the season. Still, there is now genuine optimism at the club after results have improved, and Poungouras is one of the players at the forefront. Mostly a "bit-part" player last season, Poungouras gained Giorgos Donis' trust in the summer by putting in several impressive displays in friendlies. This trust has shifted to the Championship as Poungouras has played the third-most amount of minutes for Panathinaikos this season. The centre-back has played for 1260 minutes across 14 appearances (out of 16), meaning he is a regular fixture.

In stark contrast, last season he only featured for 877 minutes (this came in 15 appearances). We are barely past the halfway mark of the competition but he has comfortably surpassed last season's figure. The only two games he missed came against Volos, due to an accumulation of cards, and OFI, due to injury. Only Sokratis Dioudis and Christos Donis have featured more.

Not only has Poungouras gained the trust of Donis, but also his teammates. The player's first season in Athens appeared to be a year of transition, but he has since emerged as a key player at the back with his strong tackling, his positional awareness, ability to win most one-on-one duels, and aerial prowess. A player in the caliber of Bart Schenkeveld has also helped Poungouras' development. The Dutchman has formed a strong combination with Poungouras at the heart of defence for the Greens, and the team has only conceded a mere ten goals in their last 13 matches. The duo is both relatively tall and complements each other well in the sense that Schenkeveld is good with the ball at his feet, and Poungouras seems to be thriving on the physical aspect of the game.

This comes as welcome news from a Greek national team perspective as Panathinaikos have traditionally supplied a lot of players, especially the all-conquering Euro 2004 squad, where the core was primarily comprised of players wearing the famous green shirt. This deteriorated as the Greens began to encounter off-field problems, which in turn affected the club's playing stocks. However, the pendulum appears to be swinging the other way again. Dimitris Kourbelis is a vital member in JVS's new-look squad, Sokratis Dioudis is among the contenders for the goalkeeping spot, and Dimitris Kolovos was used in the opening few matches of the JVS era.

Poungouras, previously out of favour at PAOK, headlines the list of up and coming Panathinaikos stars waiting for their chance at the international level, with Giannis Bouzoukis and Tasos Chatzigiovanis also waiting in the wings. The next round of international matches takes place in March, where Greece are tipped to play a couple of friendly games - the perfect time to examine a new wave of young talents.

Very much sounds like the same situation we had last season with Delbridge and Bart complementing eachother. He's in action tomorrow at 4:30am in the derby with Olympiakos.

McGree scores in his first game back after more than a month out. I’m still surprised that we didn’t buy him. Adelaide paid a transfer fee for him and should be able to sell him for more at some point in the future. Maybe CFG thought the return too small to be worth it but he could’ve helped us win trophies. Adelaide might be able to pay his salary outside the cap because he’s a Homegrown Player, which helps. At any rate, he’s a serious talent, and only just turned 21.
