Nate
Awards in general seem to have lost much of their meaning and credibility in recent times. I recall recently that the hostages involved in the Martin Place siege were being considered for bravery awards. The only one deserving was probably Tori Johnson who tried to seize the gun but while what these people went through was horrendous, they were merely victims of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

jw1739
Was gonna post about that too. All credibility has been lost, Australian of the Year means nothing from today forward. What a disgrace and dishonour to those great Australians who've won it previously. Out of the list of those awarded this honour, who do we think is actually worthy of it? I find it very difficult to nominate those who I would have on my "short list." There wouldn't be many. Perhaps my standout would be Fred Hollows. Others would be "Weary" Dunlop and John Cornforth. Would be interested in the views of others.

Nothing wrong with Sports people getting the award, but not Adam Goodes If you look at this year's nominees, all except one are 'activists' or 'campaigners', so basically people that don't actually do anything.Tim Cahill better win Australian of the Year next year after he carrys us to this Asian Cup title. Tesla
I think it's about 1000 times more justified for someone who has lead our nation to success on the international stage to get Australian of the Year than some half decent player of a sport that's barely played interstate, let alone internationally. Moraiwe
Australian of the Year shouldn't be seen as a reward for achievement. Rather, see it as a promotion of somone who can inspire others to do better. I believe that's its main purpose. While one person rarely provides inspiration to all, each one probably inspires some sector of the community. That's why it rotates a fair bit between sport, science, arts etc. (though sport does seem to get over-represented).

mattyh001
UOTIH: Amanda Duval from channel Ten's sunday night weather news is way underrated from the context that channel Ten (or another channel, couldnt care which one) needs to employee her to present the weather during the week nationally. by far the hottest weather presenter currently. the Sopranos was an ok / fairly serviceable tv series - but no where near as good as people say/ fairly overrated. people complaining about the loss of employment for taxi drivers, etc., when an airport train line for Melbourne is installed can fuck off. better public transport is required in Melbourne and needs to be prioritised over new road projects, period. and cheaper when travelling from a regional area too. Don't support the death penalty either but anyone who smuggles drugs in Asia knows the risks, it's as simple as that and Indonesia has the right to make their own laws. Disagree with your comment though that "things that have a demand should be legal. I'm sure there is a demand for hit men in certain circles for instance. jw1739
UOTYH: I support the use of the death penalty for certain crimes. And as Shahanga says above, sovereign states are entitled to make their own laws and determine the penalties for breaching them. As for the present situation in Indonesia, IMO Abbot is making a complete fool of himself by attempting to link humanitarian/foreign aid to clemency for the two Australians.

I met him when I went to the filming off Off the Bench one day back in 2011 or 12 and you couldn't get a nicer bloke, was genuinely interested in country footy. Told me that night that Malthouse to Carlton was a done deal and would happen in 18 months time, so it did.
