Mark Allen and Dr Turf aren't journalists, they have no idea how to get useful info out of people.

Turf is a smart bloke. I'm sure if he'd put some thought into it, he could have come up with a few more useful questions. I agree 100% that Mark Allen is an absolute featherweight and his knowledge on any sport besides golf (yes, even AFL) for a drive-time sports show host is laughable.

Turf is by far the best thing on that station and a fucken funny bastard FWIW.

The Hun, like all media organisation is very dollar sensitive, they'll chase the money. Sales are falling, Murdoch is losing money on his 'news'paper business, if Etihad are throwing money at his paper they'll follow the money. I can't remember seeing a double page ad from any AFL club

The tin foil hat conspiracy theories about News trying to keep soccer down in this country fall apart when you realise that Fox has exclusive rights to the game in this country and pump good money into the ALeague.

I wonder what overlap there is between the Hun readership and Fox subscription.

Rubbish paper, but appeals to most Australians. They'll take the ad Money anyday, but publish small articles about the world game, unlike paget and pages of articles on AFL.

Excellent coverage, every football fan in Oz should be proud, or nervous if they are a Visitor fan!! I can only dream of daily/weekly articles and ads of our team.

Here's a fuller write-up of the Young Socceroos match, and it sounds like Mauk and Garuccio (and Marino) did pretty well:

Mabil Brace Leads Australia to 4-1 Win Against Bermuda in NTC Invitational

CARSON, California (July 14, 2014) – Australia forward Awer Mabil scored twice and contributed an assist to lead the Australia Under-20 Men’s National Team over Bermuda 4-1 in the opening match of the 2014 National Training Center Invitational.

Australia dominated the ball for the majority of the game and outshot Bermuda 17-4, with seven shots on goal.

With the score tied through the first halftime, Australia took a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute when Mabil scored his second of the game, which would prove to be the game-winner. Hagi Gligor played a through ball to Daniel De Silva on the right side, and he passed it to Mabil for the finish.

Mabil got Australia on the score sheet in the 23rd minute, scoring from the left side after receiving a pass from Brandon Borello. Mabil’s shot was deflected by Bermuda keeper Jahquil Hill before bouncing into the goal.

Bermuda caught a break in the 41st minute when Australia recorded an own goal to tie the score at 1-1. Defender Scott Galloway deflected a pass by Bermuda that ended up getting by keeper Jordan Thurtell.

Australia put the match out of reach with two goals in second-half stoppage time. Marc Marino extended the lead for Australia to 3-1 with a goal in the second minute of stoppage time off of a Mabil assist. Stefan Mauk then scored just one minute later when he received a pass from Marino and chipped the ball over the keeper for the finish.

Australia tested Bermuda’s defense from the very start. In the 12th minute, midfielder Ben Garuccio shot from the left side and Hill blocked it with two hands. Australia almost broke through in the 16th minute, but Mauk’s shot from near the penalty mark hit the upper right corner and deflected over the goal. Mauk was set up by Garuccio, who dribbled into the box on the left side to free up Mauk before dropping a pass to the middle of the box.

Mabil was Australia’s top offensive catalyst, and he had an opportunity for a hat trick early in the second half. Mabil’s one-timer off of a cross in the 58th minute required an alert kick save from Hill to prevent Mabil from scoring a third goal and keep the score tight at 2-1 at the time.

Though Bermuda was out-shot dramatically, the team did hang around toward the end, including a second-half scoring chance from Zaire Burchall, who shot from just outside the box from the right side and forced Australia goalkeeper Thurtell to make a leaping save.

Australia returns to action against Chile on Wednesday, July 16, at 1 p.m. PT, the second day of the tournament at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center. Bermuda will then play the U.S. squad at 4 p.m. later that day.

Having seen Mauk a few times last year he certainly impressed me. A lad of somewhat slight build but a good sense of awareness on the pitch and likes to go forward from midfield and have a crack at goal. I hope we can hang on to him because he's got plenty of potential to be a high quality attacking midfielder.

On Tuesday, they played out a 2-2 draw with League Two side Bury behind-closed-doors but this encounter - along with next week's clash against a Bolton Wanderers select side - is open to the public.

Kick-off for the trip to Oldham is at 3pm on Saturday 19 July. Tickets for the encounter are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for concessions and can only be purchased at the turnstiles on the day.

Xavi's move from Barcelona to MLS reported to be imminent

Spain and Barcelona legend Xavi is said to be extremely close to finalising a move to MLS, although some uncertainty still surrounds his ultimate destination.

Rumours surrounding Barcelona legend Xavi’s possible move to MLS have been taking off over the past week, following the breakdown of his potential transfer to Qatari club Al-Arabi.

On Tuesday, Barcelona-based newspaper Sport reported that the 33-year-old was close to finalising a three-year, $24 million contract with New York City FC, following in the footsteps of ex-club and international teammate David Villa, who became the expansion side’s first-ever signing last month.

Officially announced as the league’s 20th franchise in May last year, NYCFC are set for their inaugural MLS season in 2015, alongside fellow newcomers Orlando City FC, who have just added Brazil and AC Milan star Kaka for their top-flight debut.

A joint venture between Manchester City and MLB’s New York Yankees, who together paid a reported $100 million for the team’s expansion rights, their Barca connections can be traced to their parent club’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, with the MLS club’s CEO, Ferran Soriano, also the ex-general manager of the Catalan giants.

While Xavi was previously linked to the side in January, other reports from Spain state that the midfielder is also considering offers from the New York Red Bulls and the Seattle Sounders, despite the latter having no Designated Player spots open, making a move unfeasible at the moment.

Nevertheless, NYCFC is still the most practical destination for the 133-time capped international and, with Frank Lampard’s arrival also said to be imminent, it would give the club a formidable core to begin life in MLS with.

With Villa already set for a six-month loan spell at Australian A-League side Melbourne City FC, another of Manchester City’s associate clubs, before returning in January for pre-season training, it’s possible that both the World Cup-winner and Lampard could thus do the same this summer.

A one-club man, Xavi has made 723 appearances for Barca since his debut in 1998, having come through the famous La Masia youth system, winning seven La Liga titles, three Champions League winner’s medals, two Spanish Cups and two Club World Cups during that time.

However, he seems set to be the latest player to leave the club this summer, joining Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol and Cesc Fabregas on their way out, as new coach Luis Enrique continues to remodel the squad.

Wait... Villa for 6 months?!  :o

I wouldn't take too much from it considering we don't even know what position Villa holds yet, what is interesting though is that considering NYCFC isn't actually a team playing for the MLS their existince is questionable, yes they have a license but as far as contracts go, i presume their player contract won't become viable until the club is actually training and what not so I can see these big name players receiving half year contracts with Melbourne City at minimum wage therefore we will not need to match the game fees that NYCFC would be paying them. So my understanding is pay them the minimum wage under the salary cap and replace them once the asian transfer market opens. Hope that make sense.
