Mauk was paid inside the cap. Melling and Marino are our 2 young players who are paid outside the cap.

Quite possibly we have saved a little money with Tando going and Bouzanis coming in, but it would have been very little (Tando was likely on 100k or less). Williams (reportedly on roughly 300k a season) is the substantial reason Melbourne City now has a lot more cap space.

Gameiro would still be getting paid, and his salary would keep going towards the cap, as per normal for injured players. The only way to make use of injured players' salary cap earnings is to sign injury replacement players, which is why there's often speculation over clubs signing injury replacement players, as the earnings of injured players can be something of a windfall.

All up though Melbourne City is continuing to impress with it's transfer business, with Malik being another quality addition.

Hasn't Caceres come in as an injury replacement for Gameiro?

*Paid.

The[n] there is Gameiro's salary.

The suggestion that Gameiro's salary, seemingly because he is injured, is somehow something the club can use. The only line of reasoning that could be deduced is that because he is injured his payments don't count towards the salary cap; in a sense he is not paid with salary cap money. It was an attempt at clarification--Gameiro, injured or not, gets paid for the remainder of the season, with all his payments counting towards the salary cap. Hence Gameiro's salary is not an issue. I'm not 100% myself why Gameiro's salary was suggested as a possible issue for discussion.

It isn't official that Caceres is the injury replacement for Gameiro. There was nothing about Caceres being the injury replacement for Gameiro in the club announcement here: http://www.melbournecityfc.com.au/article/city-signs-caceres-on-loan/xyob1l8519vq19a9wnyad672u. Although it was reported multiple times that Caceres is the replacement for Gameiro, and for the further reasons above I think it is probably true. Hopefully the club clarifies who is an injury replacement (Caceres? Fitzgerald? Malik?) and who is not.

Well I was under the impression that if a player is out for the season, we could bring in an injury replacement player not exceeding the injured player's salary. In effect, even though the injured player gets paid by the club, only the replacement player's salary counts towards the cap.

Fitzgerald is the IRP for Gamiero, so his wage doesn't count towards the cap as it would be less of what Gamiero was earning.

Bouzanis is on less than Velaphi, saving us a few dollars.

Caceres & Malik's wages would fill in the hole left by Williams & Mauk's departure.

So we have 1 Spot left on the Roster to replace Koren.

And a Guest spot if we choose to use it.

The injured players salary still counts towards the cap. It is the injury replacements salary up to the injured players salary that doesn't count.

And that may be one of the advantages of having him in the side, it says to our defenders 'get your ass into gear, otherwise we have a competent player on the bench who will replace you'

Will it be enough to tighten up the defence or us to win the title? Not sure, but we're going to have to if we are going to win anything this year.

Made a lot of mispasses against CCM, could not win a single aerial duel against CCM #19 (Kisnorbo had to step in and eat that guy alive) but he still looks promising.

What,, you must have been at a different game to me then. I saw him win plenty of aerial duels against CCM and plenty of well directed passes, ok some misdirected passes and some under hit passes but then others were just as guilty of them as well.

Not against #19. That guy owned Osama. At the moment he is quite behind departed Eric, but he can be much much better than him very soon. Just an observation, have nothing against Malik.

Josh Bingham? Have to disagree with you on that one mate.

Yep, him. Just look at replay of the first half. Malik won zero in the air. Actually he "won" once but gave away a free kick. Kisnorbo had to step in. On the presser JVS explained that he asked Malik to play higher. :) Kisnorbo never lost in the air to this guy. Second half #19 just tired and was not a threat.

Hmmm cause I thought there was more to being a presence than just tackling? My mistake!

To me he was great. Broke up play, positioned himself well and protected the back 4 well.

Presence.

Don't disagree but TBH half this forum could have looked pretty good against that mob. The test will be when we play the better sides.

Melbourne City's Osama Malik relishes quick return to old club Adelaide

March 8, 2016

Michael Lynch

Osama Malik, Melbourne City's newly-signed defensive utility, is looking forward to Friday night's clash with the Reds more than most games.

Until a few weeks ago Malik was an Adelaide player, until he moved to Melbourne in the deal that saw youngster Stefan Mauk return to his hometown club after spending three years at City.

"I am not at all nervous to be playing Adelaide. It will be funny playing in front of friends and family against a team you played for," Malik said on Tuesday afternoon.

The 25-year-old believes that too much was read into Adelaide's slow start to the season. Often the performances were much better than the results, he said.

"If I am being honest there was a lot made about the start they had, but I didn't think they were playing particularly badly. At the moment it seems everything is going their way."

Malik was signed by John van 't Schip largely because of his ability to cover several positions, and he is happy to be a jack of all trades – a defender or midfielder – than a specialist in just one spot.

"I like being adaptable, I have spent a lot of time as a central defender as well as playing as a holding midfielder. It's important as you play in a lot of positions and formations in the modern game."

The Reds are riding high, but Malik is confident that his City colleagues – who won 4-2 at Hindmarsh earlier in the season – have the quality to get a result against the table toppers.

"It's funny in this game how important momentum can be. Guillermo Amor has got them working more as a defensive unit and they have been hard to beat ... but with the quality we have going forward we will win games if we keep our own defensive structure tight."
