Tesla
This isn't a flash in the pan signing - we have been interested in Clisby for some time. We're going to get signings wrong from time to time - all coaches do - but the plus for me with this chap is that IMO it signals a change in coaching philosophy - at last we are signing someone who professes to actually be a defender, rather than someone who we intend to turn into a full-back from being a winger. Let's hope he lives up to van 't Schip's expectations. Jack Clisby, welcome to Melbourne City. I don't think I've ever seen this guy play, but TBH it actually bothers me that this guy can play both left back and centrally. Because players that can play both as a centre back and a full back are generally not a "modern fullback", they're not going to offer much in an attacking sense, and JVS' style of play seems to require someone who does have a bit of attacking ability as well. Of course, I could be wrong, I'm just making an assumption based on him being able to play as a centre back as well, and JVS is the one who wanted this guy so you'd think he would be suited to how JVS wants to play. Just a small worry I have in the back of my head. Edited January 17, 2015 by Tesla
heart_fan10
I remember him start a game against Perth last season against us at aami. Was actually one of their best players that day and hardly anything got passed him.
n i k o
He is strong, quick and mobile. So he is already 3/4 of the way there to being a solid player in this league.

Just a small worry I have in the back of my head. certainly a very valid point, although i'd imagine he would have a better position of the two. in a way its kinda like Franjic. can play anywhere up the right side of the park (and would probably do very well it in the a league on the right wing) but does seem suited to the right back role - even if he does get caught out from time to time. Franjic always seems to struggle for ways to beat his opposing fullback when starting on the wing. much better at playing into space as a fullback through overlaps. back on topic, i've not seen enough of Clisby to say one way or the other, but either way he at least improves of defending stocks. the fact he can do both gives soooo much more flexibility since we will still have Garuccio to drop back should Clisby be pulled centrally - particularly since Kisnorbo and Wielaart cant be trusted any more as a partnership. n i k o
Do you rate him Niko? If so that's enough for me. Honestly I don't remember him much from when we played against Perth so I don't rate him yet. But from what I've read he is known to be fairly quick and physically strong, which for me ticks the two most important boxes when your building a squad with players that fall under the salary cap. However, within this system that is the aleague you will rarely, if ever, get players (players payed within the salary cap) that are at a level where their technique, awareness and positioning is better than their speed or physical strength. So when signing players within the cap, yes I do beleive that being physically strong AND mobile are the most important attributes. Provided they have both these qualities then you make your assessments on whether they have the other qualities you are after for the positon they will be playing and the role they will play within your system. It depends on the position, as a defender pace and strength is more important but say a CAM it is more important to be good technically (ball control, dribbling, passing)

When did you last see four average performances and one brilliant one from Dugandzic? The guy wouldn't get in the match squad at any of the teams above us in the league. His point is more than valid. IMO both players are pretty much operating at the same level but Mate has been playing a harder more prominent position (or acutely out of postion as a false nine) compared to Gooch who despite being played out of postion... is at least playing a position that has a more straightforward list of objectives. In short if Gooch was turning in Mate's performances when he is played on the wing... I think we could be pretty certain that PPL on here would be looking on such performances much more favourably. There is also scant evidence that Gooch can play whole games as an A-League Winger. Ideally I woud have neither as I would put Koren on the right wing because it would allow us to play our best side with Gazza joining Mooy and Erik in the middle and we would be using poor bloody Duff where he wants to play. Jovan
That's now the conundrum. Melling has proven he must start, so to Mooy and Paartalu. So do you leave potentially our most valuable player out in Koren, of course not. Therefore this 433 ideology doesn't suit the playing stock. Agree Koren can play as the 9, but he is more suited in between the 2 lines. In a few weeks when Kennedy enters serious calculation then the problem worsens. If we go out on Sunday playing our 433 then frankly I can't see us fully utilising all our players correctly. Now is the time to look at a variation. Hopeful but not confident.

Agree that Melling must start (as well as Chapman). BUT what a great dilemma to have! So many players that are bidding for positions. The real task will be for JvS to keep them all on board and happy; pretty much like what Ange has done with the Socceroos. This will be another big test for JvS managerial capabilities. Dylan
About Clisby from what I've read many a Perth supporters is that they would have liked him to stay at Perth, so that's a positive. Was that due to then having no real depth at the back? I have read mixed reviews. but i take supporters opinions with a grain of salt since the majority tend to be hyper critical of their own players. I think the best sign is that JVS seems to have a knack at finding defenders and he has been scouting clisby since preseason and even had a crack before the season started. That's true, and since most supporters are critical of their players I found it to be a good sign that many supporters, not all though, rate Clisby. Yep hopefully the effort to bring him in is a sign that he has the quality to make a real impact for the club.
