A ‘Loyalty Player Allowance’ is almost certain to be included in new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), with 50-100 per cent or a set figure of a long-serving player’s wages exempt from the salary cap. Similar to the AFL’s veteran’s allowance, it would be capped at a certain player or price. The Herald Sun understands that the new CBA could be signed off as early as next week. The current one expires on June 30. Victory, which has yet to table Thompson an offer, is keeping an eagle eye on negotiations after the recent re-signings of Fahid Ben Khalfallah and Matthieu Delpierre have left them with little salary cap room. The loyalty allowance is one of several proposals tabled during recent negotiations between the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) and FFA, a mechanism to reward clubs for continuity and players for loyalty. Under the proposal, clubs would get a cap exemption for players who’ve served at least five years, with a greater percentage excluded the longer serving the player. Thompson, who looks set to be offered deals by at least one other A-League club and two Asian clubs, voiced his displeasure on Tuesday and declared he wouldn’t take another big pay cut after scoring 11 goals _ his second best A-League return. PFA chief executive Adam Vivian confirmed that the ‘Loyalty Player Allowance’ was strongly supported by the players but would not go into detail about its contents. Murfy1 Posted May 13, 2015 Report Share Posted May 13, 2015 I think the PFA chief Vivian is saying that there would be special concessions for expansion clubs like Melbourne City and WSW, above and beyond the new 'Loyalty Player Allowance', as these newer clubs (City & WSW) have had far less ability to sign and retain players for 5 years or more than other A-League clubs, given that most other clubs have been around for 10 years. It really wouldn't be in Melbourne City's and WSW's interest to grant this 'Loyalty Player Allowance', at least without a fight, because it would largely benefit the older clubs. So I imagine City & WSW could get a special concession (e.g. another 200k salary cap space for 2 years, or something). Anyway, the CBA is a pretty big deal, and I can imagine Melbourne City waiting to re-sign players until the next CBA is announced, hopefully next week. The World Game has learned Maclaren and his management originally asked the club's management to agree to a release, without the need for the players' union - Professional Footballers Australia - to become involved, but that this was denied. Maclaren has now officially requested a release and it is understood the request is based on the belief the club has breached a "material, non-financial" clause in the standard player contract as a result of Perth having been penalised for cheating the salary cap. The PFA is understood to be supporting him in his challenge. It remains to be seen how Perth responds to his official request for a release. Perth was barred from competing in the finals and dropped to seventh on the A-League table, also eliminating any chance the team had of qualifying for next year's AFC Asian Champions League. It has been known for a while that some players who were angry at the club because of the salary cap drama have been considering asking for a release from the remainder of their contracts. The World Game spoke to PFA chief executive Adam Vivian last month and he said any player who wished to challenge his club over a material, non-financial breach would first have to give the club 21 days to remedy it. At the time, TWG put it to Vivian that, unlike a financial breach of contract that can be remedied, there was no apparent way Perth could remedy the players missing out on the finals and losing the chance to qualify for the ACL. "At this stage, yes, I think that's a fair assumption, however the process would be that you've still got to afford the club the opportunity to respond," Vivian replied. "They've got to be afforded every opportunity to go through a process, so whilst it may be considered that they can't remedy it under the circumstances, they still have to be afforded the opportunity." Maclaren, 21, spent most of the season on the bench at Glory, behind Irish striker Andy Keogh. He was promoted to the starting side towards the end of the season, playing alongside Keogh, and finished with a flurry of goals. All up, Maclaren scored nine goals in his 20 games, only seven of which he started. He was the equal-sixth highest goal-scorer in the competition.
