FFA Cup 2015: Patrick Kisnorbo to lead injury-ravaged Melbourne City in opening tie

DAVID DAVUTOVIC

AUGUST 04, 2015

PATRICK Kisnorbo will be elevated to club captain as Melbourne City adopt a European leadership model on the eve of their FFA Cup opener away to Edgeworth Eagles.

The Hunter Valley club leads the Northern NSW NPL and will fancy its chances against an undermanned City side, missing at least seven senior players headlined by marquee Robert Koren and Socceroo Ivan Franjic.

With David Williams, James Brown, Corey Gameiro, Jacob Melling, Ben Garuccio and Marc Marino also absent, City will have at least five youth team players in its squad tonight.

Erik Paartalu led the side in the friendly against Manchester City but Kisnorbo got the armband when he came on, hence Connor Chapman or Aaron Hughes will start alongside him.

“Patrick Kisnorbo is the captain. I had a good chat with Patrick, we would like to have not only a captain on the pitch, but also as a club,’’ van’t Schip said.

“Some European teams have that model and we’ve seen Patrick as a player and a person that can be very important for the team on and off the pitch so he’ll have that role this year.

“We’ll have enough players, of course we’re not on schedule as we wanted to (be). The most important thing is that before our first league game that we have as many as possible back and that looks good.’’

Hernan Espindola, Cris Cristaldo, Phil Petreski, Stefan Zinni, Luka Prelavic and Ali Eyigun could all be included in the squad.

Van’t Schip refused to buy into speculation surrounding former Stoke City keeper Thomas Sorensen, meaning Yaren Sozer, 18, will sit on the bench while Tando Velaphi starts.

And though his contract expired at the end of last season, Argentine Jonatan Germano is available after signing as an injury replacement for James Brown.

“We’ll have some players on the bench from the NPL team, but I’m confident we’ll put a good team on the pitch,’’ he said.

“It is a great opportunity for them to show their qualities and a number of them will get playing time so it’s good to analyse them in difficult circumstances and see how they deal with pressure.’’

Van’t Schip said City would not underestimate its state league opponents.

“We had a look so we have an idea of how they play and we followed the last result, they won on Friday 2-0 and they’re leading by six points,’’ van’t Schip said.

“There’s a good vibe in the club at the moment, knowing they’re playing in the FFA Cup against us.

“It’s a game we have to prepare very seriously because from experience we know always there is a surprise and we have to make sure that we’re not one of them.’’

As nice as it is to keep Germano, this does seem to be slightly creative accounting by the club.

Also, can you get an injury replacement for an injury replacement?

And how much preseason will these injured players get John? Will they have any match time before the season starts?

Get ready for another slow start to the season.

The Imp won't be showing the game anymore, so don't go there or you will be disappointed as I am every time I have to hang with KD and embee.

FFS - They stream a NHL game for three nerds in Canucks Shirts but they can't play a fucken offical City match... was actually looking forward to watching the game as well.

Preview: FFA Cup – Edgeworth FC v Melbourne City FC

Melbourne City have announced close to a full strength squad as they take no chances against their FFA Cup Round of 32 opponents Edgeworth FC.

Edgeworth FC play out of the Northern NSW National Premier league and currently sit atop the competition ladder.

With only 4 draws and no losses in the 2015 season, expect to see Edgeworth test City at the back and look to cause an upset at Magic Park.

City have used their off-season to strengthen their squad and John van’t Schip appears to now have enough depth to pursue both league and Cup success.

Manchester City now own 100% of Melbourne City, and they will be looking to get some immediate return on their new investment.

Aaron Hughes, Michael Zullo, Steve Kuzmanovski and Ivan Franjic all make the Melbourne City FFA Cup match day squad.  With Franjic and Zullo likely to take their place on either side of the City back four, and Hughes to be played centrally, the City defense could have a very different look in 2015.

How they got there:

Melbourne City enter the Cup competition without qualifying, as per the rules of the tournament.

The Eagles were the first team from Northern New South Wales to qualify for the Round of 32 with a 3-0 win over Adamstown Rosebuds.

Player to watch:

If given the chance to start, there are no doubts on who will turn heads for City as they face NSW minnows Edgeworth Eagles. Wade Dekker is his name, and the talented youngster has been a shining light in Melbourne City’s National Premier League 1 outfit this season, scoring nine times from sixteen appearances. He’s recently been signed to his first pro contract, a great showing of faith from the club as they look to elevate youth like Dekker into the senior side. Dekker took his opportunity against Manchester City in July, where he troubled Vincent Kompany with his speed and  touch.

A near full strength squad?

Reporting that Franjic is starting?

Wade Dekker is the one that will turn heads, not Novillo?
