So much depends on Brisbane's game before us (i.e. if we go in with the knowledge that a draw will be 'enough' to sew up third, a potential recipe for disaster with this team) and Perth's attitude as well. With my limited tactical nous and ignoring the Brisbane result for a moment, I'd expect Perth to go all out from the start, seeing if they can put four goals on us. That could be very dangerous, given our shaky defensive record, but it could also give us a cheap early one on the counter, the type of rope a dope goals that teams always get against us. Assuming that open style doesn't really do much one way or another in the first half hour, Perth will probably have a preconceived idea of where they'd prefer to play in the first week of finals as the away team (at Brisbane or AAMI) and work towards that result. Perth have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If Brisbane lose, and Perth beat us by 4, they will actually finish 3rd. If Brisbane win or draw and Perth beat us by 4 they finish 4th. So they have to go for it. We are the team that has everything to lose and the one that is faced with the tactical dilemma. Would it be wise to have Malik (instead of Brattan) and Killa as DMs to give us a better chance of defending their attack? Jakobsen, Tongyik, Malik and Kilkenny would probably be our best central defensive potential and we would be hard to beat in the air as well. Also they would have to press very high to increase their scoring potential which leaves us with good counter-attacking opportunities. Just a thought. That's why our next manager just has to be one with experience, and our next squad has to have better defensive options. My main concern is with Tongyik - it seems that every match he's made a mistake or two in crucial areas of the pitch. The other concern is our brittleness. If we concede a couple we could go to pieces. If we lose a home final out of this season it will be because we have lost it, not because someone else has won it. Just with Tongyik, and this applies to our best younger players we have, they're not given enough game time to find their feet. Make a mistake or have a bad game and they're benched. Then they're brought in to prove themselves again down the track. It's really poor management of our better players. It's no wonder we have had the most varied starting eleven in the league. Another example is a guy like Arzani. Should be brought off the bench every opportune moment. Reality is he's had barely any game time. Edited April 15, 2017 by n i k o

U-16 and U-17 representative for Australia, spent 2 weeks with the EDS in Manchester before signing for our senior squad and yet can hardly get on the pitch even when the same old cattle are letting us down. http://www.melbournecityfc.com.au/article/youth-in-focus-daniel-arzani/bjlywmo7zxv7124t8vkna2q8q Edited April 15, 2017 by jw1739

True but a rapid counter attack is just not the City way, the first ball will be backwards or a winger will carry the ball forward and then pass back to a midfielder allowing the Perth defence to arrange themselves into 2 lines of 4.

Yeah we would have to learn how to move the ball quickly again and reorganise quickly, something that Roy might not have enough time to teach. I realise that, but how long does a team in that position go all out for a result like that, before just conceding that it's not going to happen? Do they automatically ditch the attempt and put the cue in the rack if we score first, for example? Basically, if the four goal loss is out of play and assuming Wanderers and Brisbane win, I think it probably ends up being City v Perth at AAMI, if there's a result either way. And if it's a draw, the likely scenario is Perth away to Brisbane in the first week of finals.
xXCiTyZeNXx
This game will test how good Roy Hodgson at mentoring and coaching the team and Valkanis. This will also test how good we will do in the final and also test us if we are good enough to qualify for Asia. Cmon city. We should still have some faith in city tonight. Happy Easter to everyone on the forum
playmaker
The final round: What's on the line It’s the final round of the Hyundai A-League season this week so we look at all the outcomes and what’s on the line for City heading into the first week of the Finals Series. Three teams will be vying for a home final during the final round with positions three to five still on the line in the final Round. City take on fifth placed Perth Glory in Round 26 of the competition with a point against the Glory securing a home final in the race for the Championship. With Michael Valkanis' side looking to finish as high as possible and an Asian Champions League playoff spot on the line, the equation is simple for Sunday. City finish third if: They defeat Perth. They draw with Perth and Brisbane lose or draw to Wellington. They lose to Perth and Brisbane lose to Wellington. City finish fourth if: They draw with Perth and Brisbane defeat Wellington. They lose to Perth by less than four goals and Brisbane draw or defeat Wellington. They lose to Perth by more than four goals and Brisbane lose to Wellington by more than three goals. City finish fifth if: They lose to Perth by more than four goals and Brisbane draw or defeat Wellington.  http://www.melbournecityfc.com.au/article/the-final-round-whats-on-the-line/nhqbywjtk5r01a7i37tkplydr

Harrison
Most important thing is we go in unchanged. Not sure if we've ever had that this season. Hard to be consistent without squad continuity so this is promising. Need to play with quick ball movement and need some decent crosses from the wingers.
