It be interesting to see how Mooy goes because Popovic knew just how to contain him and likewise last Sunday he also seemed ineffective and like he was trying to do much with the ball... however he obv was not receiving much assistance from the other Central Midfielders.

We've been here before. It's a Michael Corleone game. Just when we think we're out, they pull us back in. City 3-1.

Having said that, someone raised a good point earlier: when was the last time that a derby was drawn? It's been ages. Just about due...

It was my first A-League match attended, first derby i've watched. nil-nil @ Etihad Stadium during the 2011/2012 season i think

How we SHOULD lineup:

                     Sorensen

Franjic     Kisnorbo    Wilkinson    Zullo

                           Malik

                Caceres       Mooy

Fitzgerald          Fornaroli          Novillo

Fitzy gave a decent assist when he came on and made good impact. Could even play Garuccio on either wing.

Coach: Anyone but JVS  Ticker

Decent side on paper. Would shake up the Tards if played to this formation as long as Franjshit and Zullo don't meander up the pitch and leave little cover behind them. Caceres would need to lend support to Malik and  Mooy to have free rein to wander up the pitch to lay off passes to Fitzy, Tuna and Harry.

This game is really any ones for the taking if they want it badly enough - nothing in it IMO.

Take it is easy Tony. Calling him an Albanian is way out of line.

Am more concerned about Gypsy which is clearly being used in a derogatory way. The guy clearly isn't Romani. In fact he was a refugee from Kosovo raised in a time when racial tensions were incredibly high and has clearly been persecuted for his racial heritage before.

There are many criticisms that can be levelled at the man but his race is the lowest of them. Lift your game you're better than that.

Given every time he mention's the RBB or WSW he throws in a comment about ISIS sympathizers I'd say no, he's not better than that.

Well aware. Im also well aware of the over sensitivity to any comment that's ever present in this day and age.

Gypsies are commonly associated with crime and scams.

Berisha has scammed the referee more times than he can count. He also stole a grand final, Glory supporters definitely see the bloke as a criminal.

Edit: still wouldn't call the bloke a gypsy but he is definitely a cunt of the highest order.

Oh dear, a cunt is highly desirable and most men are trying to get as much of it as possible so I wouldn't talk up his desirability by calling him a cunt;). More of a cheat.

I can't see a 3-5-2 system resulting in anything but a loss. Franjic and Zullo don't have the engines to get up and down the pitch. And clearly there's some serious lack of cohesion amongst out back three when we play like this. Make a change JVS. Play a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield with Mooy as number 10 Malik number 6 Caceras and Retre will play beside them and provide passing options for these two but most importantly be able to drop into the fullback positions should either Franjic or Zullo push up the wing.

Melbourne derby: City must play like Wanderers to beat Victory, says Michael Zullo

February 10, 2016

Michael Lynch

Melbourne City need to adopt the Western Sydney Wanderers game plan if they are to stifle Melbourne Victory's attacking threat and earn three precious points in Saturday night's Melbourne derby, says the club's Socceroo defender Michael Zullo.

Tony Popovic's Wanderers team came to Etihad Stadium last Saturday night and dominated Victory all over the pitch for long periods in a manner rarely achieved by visiting teams at the home of the champions.

Saturday night's derby is a home game for City, so it will be played at AAMI Park – but the key to success will be the same. Deny Victory time and space to play out from the back, press hard and stop them building attacks in midfield and getting their dangerous wide players on the ball.

"A derby is a very unique experience all across the world. It doesn't matter if Victory has lost the last six and were bottom of the table. It's almost like a grand final kind of atmosphere and experience," Zullo, who is now fully fit and playing on the left side of City's five man defence as an attacking full back.

"We need to come out of the gates flying, which is different to how we played against Newcastle," (where City were surprisingly lacklustre in an unexpected 2-1 defeat at the weekend).

"We need to do what Western Sydney did to them, be aggressive, kind of boss them around the field and exert ourselves without getting over-excited. We really need to show who is the real title contender.

"I think this game can go a long way to defining the rest of our season."

Western Sydney have some physically imposing players who were able to get in Victory's face. But the diminutive Zullo insists that asserting yourself on a soccer pitch doesn't always have to be about sheer size or strength.

"You don't have to be the biggest or strongest player to assert yourself physically, as much as that seems like a strange concept.

"Asserting ourselves physically might be not giving them an inch of space on the ball, not an extra second of time. It might be getting in their faces, not letting them play their game. I think we definitely have the players to do that, when it comes to absolutely destroying their game plan."

The key is to work as hard and with the same intensity as the Wanderers.

"It's been our motto all season to hamper teams as much as possible and make life really difficult for them. If we do that we can definitely take control of the game.

"This is a massive game for a lot of reasons. There is pride on the line in terms of the derby, Melbourne are equal with us on points."

City have been boosted by the signing of Socceroo defender Alex Wilkinson on a deal until the end of the season and Zullo is confident he will bring stability to the City rearguard which has kept only one clean sheet this season.

"It's something we wanted to rectify, the amount of goals we have been conceding. He is a top signing for us. I think he is going to go a long way to provide leadership on and off the field and quality at the back as well."

Paulo Retre has had something of a break through season and he is one of a handful of former Victory players to have crossed to City and taken part in the derby.

Retre scored in the last derby against his former club – for whom he never made a senior A-League appearance – and would love to get the chance to start again.

He believes City's flexibility in their tactical approach – coach John van 't Schip has alternated between a 3-5-2 (5-3-2) and a 4-3-3 set up this season only adds to their chances.

"Tactically it's going to be a lot easier to switch over rather than just play the same formation. It's worked well for us this season."
