Van 't Schip was thrilled Mooy had returned to Melbourne after two games with the Socceroos without any problems, and he joked about his relief when the 25-year-old midfielder was withdrawn early in the second half against Bangladesh.

"Well, I made a few handstands," the 51-year-old said with a smile.

CFG, please sack JVS, hire us the best coach possible (someone who would be undisputed as the highest profile coach in Australia), get us some quality injury replacements (possibly from Manchester), and THEN get us a marquee level guest player.  Also, do an urgent review on the hardness of our training pitch and if it is too hard and is causing a continuance of calf injuries, fix it please !! ASAP!

Melbourne City admit pitch and older players may be reason for injury crisis

Michael Lynch

November 19, 2015

Melbourne City may have a state of the art training centre with some of the most expensive pitches in the country, but it hasn't stopped the club suffering an extraordinary run of soft tissue injuries, which have kept key players out of action for months.

The hardness of the surface at the City Football Academy has been cited as one of the mitigating factors, while others have pointed to the fact that the club has, in recent years, signed a number of older European players - men with impressive CVs but a lot of miles on the clock.

City coach John van 't Schip on Thursday admitted the pristine pitches, only in use for less than a year, might have had something to do with the injuries that have afflicted Ivan Franjic, Michael Zullo, Aaron Hughes and Robbie Koren, the marquee player whose second season with the club has now been blighted by a calf problem, as was his first.

The grounds are now being watered more and attention is being paid to how soft they can be made and whether that helps players avoid such injuries.

"It's something we have analysed. We are on top of that. The pitch now has been taken care of the last few weeks and hopefully it's now in a better condition," van 't Schip said on Thursday.

"For the eye it was in a perfect condition, but it was seemingly too hard. That can cause problems. I am not a groundsman ... we go out there, we plan our sessions, we want to do certain things, so all of those things could have had an effect.

"Everyone knows players that are getting towards the end of their career are more vulnerable for calf injuries, and we have a few of them, with Robbie Koren last year, this year, and Aaron Hughes is another one.

"We analysed it and hopefully we are now on top of it and we can resolve it," van 't Schip said before his team prepared to fly to Brisbane for Friday night's encounter with table-topping Roar, coached by former City (when it was Melbourne Heart) boss John Aloisi.

"It's fantastic to have this new facility and everything but getting things right is another aspect. Hopefully we have solved that now.

"We have got Andrew McKenzie [a former physio with Premier League Tottenham who also worked with AFL club Western Bulldogs] leading all the medical issues, he just started. With all those things we hope we can get to the point where we can really start working and getting players to a certain level.

"They have ways that they can measure and get the pitch to a kind of level that it's softer and they can measure that. It looks as though it is on a good level now. That's where they have to keep it."

Van 't Schip said the club's wealthy owners, the Manchester-based City Football Group, were fully aware of the situation in Australia.

"They are on top of that so we know it ... Brian Marwood [the group's football administration officer] was here the whole week ... those things are not hidden, we have discussions about that and everyone is on top of it to try to resolve those issues."

Van 't Schip said the older outfield players he had signed had been playing regularly in Europe but the transition to a new climate, harder pitches and the travel might have had fitness impacts that could not have been anticipated.

"All had a history of playing, but if you come into certain new situations ... things can come up, which in Europe maybe they didn't have any issues with.

"You know that when you get a player in here, they may be a bit older, or they are young but have some problems, or they are out of a club but still talented. Players that normally come to the A-League, they always have a kind of a history, and we try to just analyse it as good as possible."

Hughes, the veteran centre-back whose A-League debut last weekend lasted only 45 minutes, is out for another few weeks, as is club captain Patrick Kisnorbo, another vastly experienced centre-half.

Zullo is still not available because of a calf injury, but there is some good news for van 't Schip as Socceroo fullback Franjic is finally well enough to join the travelling party and be considered for a City debut against his old side Brisbane Roar, with whom he won A-League titles.

Aaron Mooy, the heartbeat of the team, will also be back from Socceroo duty having started for Australia in the wins over Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh in World Cup qualifiers in the past week.

"Ivan is involved. He played in the youth team last week. He has been training. He will be travelling up with us. It's just now trying to get him in one way or another, see how far he is [able to last] in games.

"He has been out a long time. He played one game in June with the Socceroos, since the Asian Cup he has not played anything.

"Looking at that, hopefully we can get him back very quick, but he has to be managed very carefully. We will have a few players we have to see if they can get to 90 minutes. Ivan is one of them, if he starts or comes in we will decide later on."

This back in September:

Head Coach John van’t Schip said: “It’s great to be able to give Hernan and Callum the chance with the first team and we believe they possess the right attributes to help our A-League team.

“Both players have spent time during the pre-season, have been working hard and deserve their opportunity.

“Hernan especially is familiar with the way we play having been part of the Club’s youth system for three seasons now, while Callum has integrated well into the first-team squad since joining us in August.”

The Club can also confirm that young striker Marc Marino faces an extended period on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his MCL (medial collateral ligament) in his knee in a recent pre-season match against North Geelong Warriors.

So where did it all go wrong for Richardson?

Less than a month and a half ago he was looking to be on the right track. Now he's non existent and on top of that Espindola has already been part of the team a few times.

Explanation please City?

BLUFFER’S GUIDE

Melbourne City are in desperate need of a result after the crushing disappointment of last weekend’s 3-0 home loss to Western Sydney Wanderers.

That result marked a third defeat in six for John van’t Schip’s side, leaving the title hopefuls three points adrift of the top six ahead of one of the competition’s most daunting trips.

The return of talisman Aaron Mooy means Brisbane’s proactive midfield won’t entirely be devoid of defensive responsibility but does little to patch up City’s own leaky rearguard (though Socceroo Ivan Franjic could return, according to JVS).

Brisbane are more than capable of exploiting those inadequacies as they seek to cement top spot.

Jamie Maclaren and captain Matt McKay both return to a squad which did enough to see off Perth Glory last Sunday for a fourth win in six.

In a clash of two teams who many predicted would be occupying reverse roles at this stage of the season, the visitors will need to fight to prevent John Aloisi from punishing his former employers.

OPTA DATA

- Brisbane is looking to keep four consecutive clean sheets in the Hyundai A-League for the first time since September 2010.

- City won all three of their encounters with Brisbane Roar last season, only conceding one goal.

- Henrique has scored four goals in his seven Hyundai A-League appearances against Melbourne City/Heart.

ROUTE TO GOAL

Jamie Maclaren is expected to resume his role as the focal point of a potent Brisbane attack after missing last week’s match due to Olyroos duty.

Fan favourite "Aussie" Henrique instead provided the spark – and goal – on his return from a lengthy knee injury. The Brazilian will be called upon regularly from the bench as experienced depth.

Spanish recruit Javier Hervas appears to be a productive new supplier for the front three having cleverly assisted Henrique’s winner on debut.

City will again look to five-goal forward Bruno Fornaroli to trouble Roar with his smarts around goal and the Uruguayan will be glad to link with Mooy once more.

Harry Novillo’s ability to complete 90 minutes could equally be the difference in the away side’s hopes of securing a result, while former Roar fullback Ivan Franjic could provide punch from deep.

WHO’S BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK?

Jamie Young earned selection in A-League's Team of the Week last round for keeping a third straight clean sheet. The Brisbane-born goalkeeper continues to establish his place as Roar’s number one in Michael Theo’s ongoing injury concerns.

FORM LINES

Brisbane Roar: WWLWDW
Melbourne City: DLWLWL

PREDICTION

Brisbane Roar 3-1 Melbourne City

I think its a good idea for sports science to gtfo of sport.

They are fkn wrecking players. MCFC please go back to basics, get rid of your marketing, sports scientists and all the other insignificant infrastructure and train hard at the local park and win games. Winning is the best marketing and the club success will look after itself.

fkn hopeless.
