Murfy1
Melbourne City star Aaron Mooy could miss vital Wanderers clash with broken ribs January 4, 2016 David Davutovic MELBOURNE City star Aaron Mooy remains in doubt for Saturday’s clash against his former club Western Sydney due to cracked ribs. City officials claimed that Mooy was an 11th hour withdrawal from last Saturday’s draw with Sydney FC due to a hip injury, but News Corp Australia can reveal that Mooy busted several ribs three weeks earlier. Ivan Franjic (corked thigh) and Erik Paartalu (groin) are also no guarantee of returning for the crunch game against the A-League leaders and must first prove their fitness. Sydney FC became aware of Mooy’s issue in the lead up to last Saturday’s clash and had planned to physically target him during the game. The Socceroo did light work during the week and avoiding contact drills at training in a bid to be fit but was ruled out at the last minute. Mooy’s injury occurred in the 59th minute of the 4-0 win at Newcastle Jets when he slid in to finish Ivan Franjic’s cross and crashed into Mark Birighitti’s shins in the follow through. Suspecting merely a bruise, Mooy played on but physically struggled in the next two games against Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar before opting for scans after relatively sub-par performances. The results confirmed that he had four fractured ribs. City declined to comment on the Mooy injury revelation but coach John van’t Schip said he was still sore on game day. “Aaron yesterday got a little hit and reported some soreness and this morning it didn’t improve so we had to take the decision because it’s a very busy schedule and there’s a lot of games still to come that we wouldn’t risk him for this game,’’ van’t Schip said after the Sydney FC draw. “Ivan was struggling all week with the cork. He tried (on Friday) but we had to rule him out. “It was tough with five different players in from last week and missing some players that didn’t pass a fitness test.’’ Franjic copped a corked thigh after a collision with Dimi Petratos last week, while Paartalu felt his groin at training the day before the Sydney FC clash. Midfielder/right-back Paulo Retre will return from suspension but City has lost midfielder Stefan Mauk, who has departed for Dubai to join the Olyroos ahead of their Rio 2016 qualifiers in Qatar. http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/football/a-league/melbourne-city-star-aaron-mooy-could-miss-vital-wanderers-clash-with-broken-ribs/news-story/913f6cef069d89cd7cc374ed8a41df53

Murfy1
Mooy nominated for PFA's player of December, and in contention to be the first player ever to win the PFA's player of the month awards back-to-back: Quote Having racked up 14 goals between them for December, Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) is pleased to announce the nominees for the PFA Footballer of the Month. Taking into account rounds nine to 11, the five nominees were selected by an awards committee made up of former Socceroos and leading figures in the Australian football media. The nominees include: Mark Bridge, Western Sydney Wanderers; Bruno Fornaroli, Melbourne City; Jamie Maclaren, Brisbane Roar; Aaron Mooy, Melbourne City; and Marcelo Carrusca, Adelaide United. Having scored seven goals between them, Melbourne City duo Fornaroli and Mooy were outstanding during December, with Mooy vying to become the first player to win the award back-to-back. http://pfa.net.au/?p=5454 Fornaroli also named. Impressive seeing Melbourne City being the only club with 2 players named in the PFA's 5 player shortlist. Murfy1
Super Mooy crucial to City's title hopes 22 Feb 2016 Coach John van 't Schip has hailed Aaron Mooy's growth as Melbourne City re-asserted their A-League title credentials against Central Coast Mariners. After inspiring Melbourne City to another A-League goal glut, Mooy says his side could win the Premiers' Plate but they could just as easily miss the finals. Mooy scored twice in City's 4-1 defeat of Central Coast on Sunday. The Socceroos midfielder crossed for Patrick Kisnorbo's equalising goal before sending a penalty and a free kick past Paul Izzo. The virtuoso performance was nothing new for the 25-year-old, who has nine goals and 16 assists for the campaign. To put his creativity in context, the A-League's next best for assists is Thomas Broich, with six. The modest midfielder didn't want to focus on his performance after the match, instead celebrating his side's first win in four matches. "It was a good day for the team," he said. "We got the three points when we really needed it. It's good to get back to winning ways." Melbourne City coach John van 't Schip was happier to discuss Mooy's stellar contribution. "He's really a midfielder who works, who wins balls back, he's taking the team and leading the team by example. "He's been important for the team all year but today he was one of the players that took the team by the hand." The tag of on-field leader sits uneasily with the softly-spoken Mooy. "I don't know ... everyone can do it, make a tackle. If you work, the team lifts," he says. Mooy said he enjoyed his role in van 't Schip's 4-3-3 system more than his more advanced position when the side plays a 3-5-2. "It suits me better to win the ball back as well," he said. "The old formation it was very difficult to try and win the ball back because you were always outnumbered. "Now we've matched up so we can get closer to the player on the ball." Sunday's triumph means City have a chance to go top of the A-League - if only momentarily - on Friday when they visit Wellington. City have never been first in the league so late in a campaign and Mooy said it was a motivational factor for the side. "It's so close," he said. "A few losses and you can be out of the six. A few wins and you can be right up top. "If we keep winning, we've got a great chance." http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2016/02/22/super-mooy-crucial-citys-title-hopes-0
