Our Marquee Man...

As knickerbocker posted in the pre-season thread, it looks like there was some sort of press conference or presentation today, going off tweets from former Melbourne Heart owner Ghadir Razuki:

Getting the lowdown from JvS. Villa slated to play left back. Nooot. Excited by Aussie youth (Brown, Chapman et al)

https://twitter.com/ghadirr/status/476571685047398401/photo/1

He also had some pretty interesting things to say about the club's incoming marquees:

they're chasing serious quality for marquees. No names mentioned suffice 2say they'll be household.

https://twitter.com/ghadirr/status/476663459849834496

and Aus mquee has been hardest given paucity of availability. JvS very clear on which posis he wants filled

https://twitter.com/ghadirr/status/476663623540957184

Interesting that the Aussie marquee seems to be hardest. I guess there is a very limited number of good Australian footballers, although I judged a good amount of good Australian footballers to be available for signing up for next season. I guess without knowing what sort of Aussie marquee they want to sign (e.g., what position they want the player to player in, and what qualities they want him to have) it's hard to discern how difficult it is to sign a marquee player.

I had a feeling the club has now steered in the direction of signing marquees that can make a big splash (the signing of David Villa was a pretty big hint). It'll be interesting to see how big the reputation of these "serious quality" marquees is...

We were also linked with James Troisi today on Twitter. Not sure how you take it, but it is a rumour.

Would take.

inb4 omg Heart taking Victory's scraps again, but he had a seriously good season last year - albeit a bit quiet at stages, but he is quality.

I think the club might want to sign a midfielder as the Australian marquee. That would explain the "paucity of availability" regarding options for an Australian marquee, as there are few good Australian midfielders available out there, and even fewer no 10s or attacking midfielders.

Troisi would be a pretty impressive signing. He's only 25, so he could give the club many good years (which is a theme with our recruitment. This team is being built to last; it's full of promising and talented players who are nearly all 26 or younger), and it would be a smart and safe move because it's already established that he can star in the A-League (and I wouldn't care about the club he was at last season either. He was only on loan there).

And 3 days ago it was reported on Troisi:

When discussing his future at club level, Troisi was keeping his cards close to his chest as he placed all of his energies into preparing for Brazil.

“Yeah well I’ve still got a contract with Atalanta for two years, but at this point my main focus is on the World Cup and then when that’s finished, I’ll sit down with my agent and Atalanta and see what they are thinking,” he said.

A potential return to the English Premier League, where he spent time with the Magpies between 2005 and 2008, is also on the agenda.

“Yeah of course. To be honest I’m open to almost anything. The most important thing is to play and keep playing at a high level and the Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world,” Troisi offered.

The 1 question mark I'd raise regarding Troisi is that I think he's better in wide areas than he is centrally, and we already have enough wide midfielders/wingers. So I wonder if he'd really excel if he was our no 10 in the middle of our midfield, being our playmaker (where we'd probably need him to play). I think he could probably do pretty well there, and maybe develop over time to star in that position, but I don't think Troisi is a proven high quality no 10, and the club could probably easily get an international player to star in that position.

Still, i'd be pretty happy if we snared Troisi, as I think he'd be pretty good wherever we played him.

Another big positive with signing Troisi is that we could get a star international striker. After so many years of us supporters subsisting on the likes of Maycon, Macallister and Mifsud, what a thrill it would be to have a top class striker who effectively scores at will.

Murfy1 what's your opinion of Alberto Gilardino ?

Murfy1 what's your opinion of Alberto Gilardino ?

I think Gilardino is an impressive Italian striker in his early 30s that would probably fit the bill pretty well for an international marquee in the A-League, like Fabio Quagliarella. I think players like them, with great experience at big Italian clubs, and still pretty good ages allowing them to star in the A-League for multiple seasons, would be excellent signings. Sort of like our own David Villa.

What might mitigate against the signing of Gilardino is that from what I understand he's got 2 full years left on his contract at Genoa, so it might be pretty difficult to acquire him.

There's probably many other excellent options out there for an international marquee striker. I haven't really contemplated them much for a while, as the evidence seemed to point towards the club getting a international marquee midfielder. However, now that's looking uncertain, and who knows we might get our own David Villa, so to speak.

The optimist in me agrees with you (and I am mostly optimistic). There is one brain cell that remarks that the players are just ripe for developing and on selling. On this I am not too concerned as that would imply that the quality of players is improving and the national team can only benefit.

Apparently NYCFC have signed a guy called Jeb Brovsky who can play midfield or in defence

Their website is saying he will be loaned to a non MLS team through to December

I wonder if he is coming to Melbourne?

He's from the Montreal Impact. I doubt that he will come to us as a loan player.

Apparently Jeb Brovsky is a left-back. Could be a handy loan, however I'd much prefer us to get a left-back fully signed to the club.

Speaking of left-backs, SBS journalist Vitor Sobral spoke to former Spain International Joan Capdevila, who was released from La Liga side Espanyol at the end of last season, and he said he's interested in joining Villa in Melbourne:

Had the pleasure of speaking with Joan Capdevila about Spain, Australia and David Villa's Melbourne move, JC wants to join him #SBSWorldCup

https://twitter.com/Vitor_TWG/status/477164283961565186

yeah he was an elegant defender, it was great to hear [him] talk so keenly about Australia.

https://twitter.com/Vitor_TWG/status/477172341706084352

Well, Capdevila did play more minutes at Espanyol last season than Engelaar did at PSV in 2012/13 before he joined us last season...

Yeah wouldn't be classified as a Victory 'reject' but one of their stars.

Don't think Troisi is likely however it would be brilliant just to stir the tards.

Wouldn't want him even if it would hurt the tards. He looks way out of his depth in Brazil he offered nothing when he came on this morning against Chile and was the same against Croatia. Dunno why Ange is persisting with him should've been sent home with Rogic and co.

Fuck Kennedy. Give me Bresciano <3

A bit harsh, Kennedy wasnt even playing this morning! I wish he was fit, the big fella coming off the bench in the last 15 could have been the difference. As fantastic as Cahill was he was out on his feet at about the 80 minute mark. We all would have been over the moon for either of them 12 months ago dont forget. Given what is on offer in the market right now I would be over the moon to see either of them in a City/Heart shirt this season.

IMO the so-called Australian marquee is looking more and more difficult to fill with a player who justifies the tag and the money (and approval by FFA) of the right football quality and who can stand up to 27+ matches for us.

Internationally we have no problem - just a matter of going down the list until you get someone prepared to come.

Bresc, whilst doing some good things today, really let us down when push come to shove. There were a couple of key opportunities that he fucked up. Also, his bread and butter - set pieces - weren't anything special. Lucky we're getting Kennedy because I'm just not sure about Bresc anymore.

I'd put it down to a lack of match fitness more than anything, otherwise I thought Bresc was tremendous with his composure on the ball and the ability to play the right passes.

There were a couple of stray passes and a missed shot on goal but he also had that shot which was miraculously saved from Bravo, he gave us a calming presence in midfield and certainly didn't look out of place.

I guess with the likes of Troisi, that have probably been earmarked to be a major part of the Australian campaign for Russia in 2018, there's a bit of a conflict of interest, as to whether running around in the A-League is the best thing for their development in the prime years of their careers. Similar to the conflict with an international marquee, that if you want a big name, it's almost certainly going to be a guy in his twilight years.

Davidson and Leckie were the bolters, for unknowns they had great games. I admit I was disappointed Bresc was in the squad (too old, not match fit etc) but he played his part well enough today. Trosi coming on was useless. I would love to know how far Kennedy was off making the squad. Playing a role up front for 10 mins may have made the difference. They were getting well beat in the air.

There was a number of players that impressed like Leckie, Cahill and Davidson and a few others like Franjic(?), something that no doubt will be noted by the club.. There was also some players that gave me a few "but for the love of god why..WHY?" moments

Bresciano looked hampered in some way..no idea why really

Franjic is a Melbourne boy. I actually know someone who knows him extremely well.

Spends alot of time in Melbourne throughout the season aswell.

Ill try and find out what his plans are if his interested in a return home but after his showing no doubt Europe could be calling!!

Franjic was a big loss IMO when he got injured. He had two major involvements in the goal we scored, with a sliding interception of a clearing pass (from someone from Chile), and then the cross to Cahill. Having said that I think he was somewhat responsible for the second goal to Chile. Completely lost his man by getting sucked into the centre.

Still a quality player and perhaps his injury was the reason we didn't have a sub left to bring off Cahill who clearly tired in the end. We need more avenues to goal other than Cahill's whopping forehead.

Anyway back on the topic of marquees. I think bresc was quality in the game and clearly his lack of match fitness showed, but his composure on the ball and ability to pick out passes is still top notch and it was such a shame that he didn't score the equaliser. Brilliant strike.

Not sure who I'd prefer as aussie marquee out of bresc or kennedy.
