jw1739
As expected, the Tards have tipped us out of the ACL and it will be Newcastle who take the ACL play-off place. So another season gone for no reward. Last week's defeat cost us the whole season. I hope the club finally gets the message that you have to control your own destiny and not rely on other results to get you through. Two shit weekends in a row. Oh well, onwards and upwards to better things next season.

Torn Asunder
The irony of Newcastle getting screwed by the VAR, which by extension again screwed us again. The sooner the A-League does away with the finals series the better. Our comp needs to be consistent with the majority of the world.

The finals are one of the best things about this league. As is the fact that the Grand final location is not fixed. The players go up for it. The fans go up for it. The media goes up for it. The sponsors go up for it. Season would have been pointless with about 1/3 rd of it to go.

Torn Asunder
By all means play a few different cup comps, and even finish the season off with a cup final, but for the season every team should play each other an even number of times and the team with the most points should be the champion. That is the fairest way to reward the best team for the season. This should happen as soon as relegation kicks in.

It wont have the same cut through, for the same reason the FFA cup is not that popular

I don't like the finals system either, but I don't see it being jettisoned any time soon. Versions of it are now used in promotion and relegation play-offs in various leagues. We just need to learn how to use it as Victory have just demonstrated. IMO where we went wrong was in Round 27 against Wellington. We were already assured of 3rd place when we went there, and so it was an ideal match in which to give a couple of fringe players either a start or an extended period on the field. Instead Joyce left Budzinski out of the side altogether and gave Fitzgerald only 17 minutes. Then in the semi-final in Newcastle when they scored and we need a goal, Joyce waited until we went behind and as late as the 81st minute before sending these two attackers on to the field. In my mind these are the sorts of reasons why we didn't do any better this season.
Shahanga
@jw1739 Joyce’s non use of Budzinski in the lead up to the finals is grounds for dismissal in my book. It should have been obvious that we might need to turn to him to “produce a goal from nothing” and as such he needed to be given some minutes to prepare him for that possibility. So what happens, the moment comes and he plays like a bloke who hasn’t been on the pitch for months (funnily enough). and as to the game versus Wellington it was indeed a sign that the team wasn’t where they should be and not “ an irrelevance” like some claimed (or perhaps hoped).
Shahanga
What are the odds the VAR wasn’t working properly in our game either, but they haven’t said because they haven’t had to.

Yep, dismissal might be a little harsh but Joyce practically putting Budzinski in cold storage, forcing him to sit on the bench and not giving him even minutes on the pitch over the last few months is pathetic. Then Wazza has the gall to send out on the pitch in a do-or-die match with minutes to go and expect Bud to give his all for the team. It's lucky Bud appears not to have the short fuse that Roy O'Donovan has or we'd see Wazza brushing his teeth with his toothbrush stuck up his arse. jw1739
VAR simply introduces another step into a process and therefore introduces another step where something can go wrong. The on-field referee and his two assistants, plus the fourth official, (plus goal-line adjudicators if we really want them) , are all that is required to make sound decisions. All that has happened is that the discussion has moved from whether the ref got it wrong to why the VAR got it wrong, couldn't make a decision, or wasn't consulted. Young Polak
Lets not forget the linesman was dogshit for not seeing the offiside as well and he was close to the offside infringement. His body language displayed doubt in the scenario but did not flag offside. Edited May 7, 2018 by Young Polak

The problem with VAR is the linesmen would err on the side of caution and leave the decision up to VAR so they don't flag for offsides if there's any doubt. If they flag for a decision and the player is incorrectly adjudged offside they'd get hammered by the Fox Sports commentary team and the general public. In my mind VAR has to be all or nothing. You can't have goals scored being over-ruled by VAR for being offside when you can be incorrectly called offside when in a goalscoring position by the linesman and have no ability to overturn that decision. I'd rather we get rid of it and deal with human error rather than an disparity caused by technology.
