Tbitm
Melbourne Heart fans will head along to Harry Kewell's final match on Saturday not knowing whether they're farewelling their team as well. Heart cannot make the finals, making their Saturday date with Western Sydney their last game of the season before a Manchester City-backed renovation of the club. If they don't win on Saturday Heart will finish as the league's bottom club. A name change to Melbourne City - not confirmed by the club but backed up by a trademark application - and a switch to the sky blue of their Mancunian parent club are on the cards. Without any firm decisions made, at least not publicly, Heart's most passionate fans have been left unsure and plan to again protest a potential switch at the game. The "Yarraside" and "Red and White Unite" fan group has been one of the most vocal against the switch, with banners and chants aimed at the club's new hierarchy. On Saturday, 2500 printed signs saying "Keep Melbourne Red and White" will be distributed amongst the crowd following an online crowdfunding campaign. It's a pickle for Heart's new owners, who hope to massively grow the club's popularity in the future. Heart average just 7,000 fans to each home match not including the Melbourne derby. But club suits should enjoy a bumper crowd on Saturday to farewell Australian football royalty. Kewell has not shown his best form or fitness for Heart since making his return to the A-League at the start of the season but has been embraced by the club. Named captain by John Aloisi, Kewell is often cited as a major influence both on and off the field by Heart players. His last goal for the club came as a substitute in the Melbourne derby, capping a spectacular 4-0 win over Victory, his former club. Kewell has not played since announcing his retirement two weeks ago, ending his career against the side that represents his birthplace, Western Sydney. http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-sport/kewells-farewell-could-be-heart-swansong-20140408-36b15.html

Alexxandro
Lets hope at the end of the game some players are willing to pose with a placard! Best bet is players coming off contract but I say ask all of them. Could get lucky. Definitely be nice to get Kewell holding one and Engelaar. Maybe I'm dreaming.
Murfy1
I think it'd be a good idea if we decide on specific times where everyone picks these placards up and displays the high on top of our heads for like a minute or two because it will look better when done in unison. For example, if we ALL held them up ON Kick-Off, on the 15min mark, 30min mark & 45min mark (considering there will probably be a 1min injury time) then at least we can all be seen to be in sync! Then repeat again in the second half, On Kick-Off, 60min mark, 75min mark & 90min mark until the full time whistle... What do you guys think? Agree with this. I think the issue will have decent attention going into the game though, so supporters won't have to raise placards every 15 minutes to get the point across. I also think that the best way to get as many Premium A, Premium B and General Admission supporters involved as possible is to only raise the placards together a few times, like during So Happy Together, at 45 minutes and at 90 minutes. I also think that will enable supporters to give Harry Kewell his due send off in his farewell match, by possibly making noise for him when he walks out onto the pitch (as it's been reported that there will be a guard of honour from both teams for Kewell), at the 10th minute and when he gets substituted in the second half (which is bound to happen). If Harry Kewell doesn't get his due send off because of frequent demonstrating for the Keep the Red and White campaign, then that could conceivably garner bad media coverage and hurt the campaign and the delivery of the message. So because there will be a few different balls that supporters will have to juggle on Saturday, I agree that activities for the day should be planned out in advance, with activities being scheduled for specific times.

Fingman
Both of those articles are great. Especially that 89th minute one, he really talked up the league in general. Good stuff KM. Also agree with you Murfy about organising the activities properly. There's a few things that i think need to be clear to the wider fan base and the media on the day. We aren't doing this to drown out Harry's farewell or to make it less important and i also think it is important to make clear that we aren't against Manchester City and we are grateful and honoured to be in the position we are in we simply don't want them to change our colours. Either way regardless of our difference in opinions on this issue, I applaud your (and others) efforts. Truly remarkable. Well done mate. No, not at all mate. You know I've never been one to let things mentioned on the forum be carried over into real life. I know where you stand on the issue and understand your position. As I think I've said elsewhere, at the end of the day, regardless of whether you are In or Out, pro takeover or anti takeover, ambivalent or passionate about the colour issue, 95% of us would probably prefer that the colours were kept. And that's all the campaign is about. I know some of us might care more than others about the colours remaining, and that's fine, but those differences shouldn't be the focus. It's the common ground that we share in supporting a Red and White team that is the focus for Saturday. In all honesty I've done very little since this started, besides putting the order in for the placards.it has been a massive group effort, everyone should be congratulated on what we've achieved so far. Popular Post Murfy1
Don't rip the Heart out of our club! Melbourne fans plead City owner Mansour to not change their kit from red to sky blue Chris Wheeler 9 April, 2014 Fans of Manchester City’s Australian club Melbourne Heart have begged Sheikh Mansour not to take away the club’s soul by changing their playing colours from red and white to sky blue. City bought an 80 per cent stake in the A League club for £6.7million in January and an application has already been made to trademark the name Melbourne City FC. Many supporters are prepared to accept the name change but have launched a ‘Keep the Red and White’ campaign against proposals to play in City’s blue kit as well. Original outlook: Melbourne Heart fans don't want Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour to change their kit In a move that will resonate with fans of Cardiff City, 2,500 placards will be handed out at Saturday’s final game of the season against Western Sydney Wanderers to support the campaign and banners will displayed around Melbourne’s home ground at AAMI Park. One fan wrote an impassioned plea to City owner Mansour on the Melbourne Heart Supporters Association website, Red and White Unite, pleading with him not to rip the heart out of Melbourne by turning them into a ‘mini Manchester City’, and warning that supporters could turn their backs on the new club. It read: ‘Please, Manchester City, please, Sheikh Mansour – if you happen to read this, I and countless others are begging you: please, do not erase our club. Please listen to us, the fans and members. ‘This is not about ultimatums or fans having a tantrum over a little issue and threatening to walk away. Our colours are a fundamental part of our club, and without them, particularly alongside the other wholesale changes proposed for Melbourne Heart, many fans, me included, will feel there is nothing left to walk away from. ‘Our club will have been taken from us. Melbourne Heart, the club that I love and am endlessly loyal to, will be dead. I have to believe it’s not too late to stop that.’ Appealing to other supporters, it added: ‘The changes on the cards are a name change – probably to Melbourne City FC – and a change of colours from red and white to something else, most likely sky blue. ‘In other words, a ‘brand alignment’ with the Manchester City model. This is undesirable in and of itself, in my opinion, because as others have said elsewhere, this leaves us as a mere plastic ‘brand’, the ‘mini Manchester City’ that the new owners so publicly declared we would not become. It is hard to generate any kind of passion for a brand. ‘Let’s not kid ourselves. The club known as Melbourne Heart, that we have all grown to love, that we have stood by through some of the toughest times ever experienced by any A-League fans, that we have cajoled our family and friends into supporting – that club would be gone. ‘If you change the owners, the badge, the name and the colours, all at once, and from the top down, without the instigation or at least approval of the fans, then that club is gone. It ceases to exist. It is replaced by a new entity. ‘People have said that it is unreasonable to welcome this with one hand and reject any change with the other. Well, to those people I say that that kind of success would feel hollow to me, like we sold our souls. I never asked for the richest club in the world to buy my club – I was given no choice in the matter. ‘Melbourne Heart is my life, but if it is destroyed and ceases to exist, I will not be able to just ‘switch over’ and support the new club that replaces it. That is not a vacuum that is easily filled. ‘Even if I do choose to keep attending the matches of a club known as Melbourne City that plays in sky blue (and I might, I’m not sure yet), it will not be with a fraction of the passion which I have for Melbourne Heart.’ A statement from the campaign group confirmed the plans for Saturday’s final game that will also mark former Liverpool and Leeds winger Harry Kewell’s farewell appearance. A statement read: ‘Melbourne Heart supporters will be conducting a campaign to “Keep Melbourne Red and White” at Melbourne Heart’s final season game. ‘In what may be Melbourne Heart’s final game before a name and colour change is made, a number of Melbourne Heart supporters have come together and launched a campaign aimed at celebrating the colours synonymous with Melbourne Heart. This campaign is not to protest any possible colour change, but instead to show the new owners the passion behind the colours red and white. ‘Melbourne Heart supporters welcome the investment from our new owners and hope that the campaign will encourage the new owners to keep Melbourne’s colours of red and white.’ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2600633/Dont-rip-Heart-club-Melbourne-fans-plead-Manchester-City-owner-Mansour-not-change-kit-red-sky-blue.html
