Players like Zullo and Franjic were speculated on for a long time before anything actually came of it. Lucas Neill was probably the closest that I can remember that didn't eventuate, but I don't remember anyone actually confirming that the deal was done. I'd love to know what they're waiting for though...
Kinnibari
Maybe he's not ready for this weekend so they're waiting til next week so as not to officially leave him out of the squad.
R410
Socceroos centre back Alex Wilkinson is set to sign for A-League title chasers Melbourne City unless an 11th hour bid from a cashed up Chinese club prises him out of City's grasp. The Chinese transfer window remains open longer than the rest of the world, and as a free agent, Wilkinson, a current Australian international, would be an attractive target. But if nothing transpires from Asia by Friday, Wilkinson will ink a deal with City, who could do with his defensive solidity and experience as they gather themselves for the premiership and championship run . Deeming
If we released Erik without having secured Wilkinson or someone else of a higher standard then I'm seriously wondering about CFGs desire to win silverware this year. If he is fit he'll surely be in our first 2 centre backs selected, what with Chapman out for ages (not convinced he will be back this season), Kisnorbo probably out a couple of weeks and Hughes being a questionable proposition seemingly every week. He would get the job done at the back and allow Malik to play as a DM, which we desperately need now. However Malik is not a good DM... as his passing range is not at all up to the standard we need in our midfield

Murfy1
Melbourne City set to seal Alex Wilkinson deal on Friday 23 minutes ago David Davutovic SOCCEROO Alex Wilkinson is set to become a Melbourne City player on Friday, barring an 11th hour deal in China. City and the Wilkinson camp had agreed a deadline of midnight Thursday night to secure a contract in China, otherwise he would join the A-League club. The defender is understood to have already agreed terms with City, who moved swiftly on Tuesday after Erik Paartalu was released to join, coincidentally, Wilkinson’s last club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. Melbourne Victory are understood to have expressed interest, but Wilkinson opted to negotiate with City. However Wilkinson’s management was on standby in case a Chinese club submitted a late offer. While the Chinese transfer window is open until February 26, the quasi deadline was mutually set by the two parties. If he signs, Wilkinson is unlikely to play in Sunday’s visit to Newcastle Jets but could debut in the Melbourne derby at AAMI Park on Saturday week. Socceroos teammate and City right-back Ivan Franjic said the players were in the dark about his impending arrival. “Alex is a great player, I only read in the paper that there’s a possible chance of coming here. “We’ve played together in the Socceroos and he’s a great professional and a good leader, if we do pick him up he would be a great signing for the club.” Australian defenders are in vogue in the Chinese Super League, with Trent Sainsbury (Jiangsu Suning) and Ryan McGowan (Henan Jianye) recently joining Socceroos teammate Matthew Spiranovic (Hangzhou Greentown), while Liaoning Whowin signed Michael Thwaite from Perth Glory. Wilkinson, who spent seven years with Central Coast Mariners, quit the Korean champions in December, having forged a strong reputation during three seasons with Jeonbuk, winning two titles and being named in the 2014 team of the season. It coincided with a Socceroos call-up by Ange Postecoglou, where he has become a consistent performer on his way to winning 16 caps. While Wilkinson’s management indicated that his preference was to remain in Asia, A-League clubs only showed lukewarm interest in him until this week. It’s unclear whether Wilkinson has agreed a short-term deal or an 18-month contract as he was open to either, but City has the salary cap and squad room to fit him in. While not be a straight replacement for defensive midfielder Paartalu, City’s defensive woes and injury concerns prompted coach John van’t Schip to move for Wilkinson. However Aaron Hughes was expected to return on Sunday while Patrick Kisnorbo (achilles) appears to have recovered after coming off just minutes into last week’s loss to Western Sydney. Recent swap signing Osama Malik and Jacob Melling, who were both deployed as stoppers last week, are likely to be moved into their preferred midfield positions to replace Paartalu. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/football/melbourne-city-set-to-seal-alex-wilkinson-deal-on-friday/news-story/1147757538dcc855e1fe1c13fb48b855
