Grant Holt

I'd be interested to know whether, up to now, an A-League club has paid a transfer fee to another club to effect a transfer? The usual thing seems to focus on players who are, or are coming, out of contract, and is very limiting.

MV paid around half a million for Hernandez.

Think it's pretty absurd to be paying any fee transfer for any striker, when there are a plethora of strikers out there who are out of contract that we could pick up for free.

Whether we offered a million AUD, or whatever, seems like an incredible waste of money too me.

If we paid a million dollars for this guy and he kicks 20 goals

As opposed to a guy we pay 250k for and he kicks 5.

It is a strong investment.

We can only speculate, but I think that Heart are going after Holt in particular because they want a marquee who could give the club 3 to 5 good seasons. Grant Holt is only 32 years old. Compare that to Heskey, 35, or Del Piero, 38. If we managed to sign Holt, it's very probable that he wouldn't be a one season wonder like Dwight Yorke at Sydney FC in season 1, or Harry Kewell at Melbourne Victory.

Grant Holt also said recently that 'I have always said the family comes first and I do not want to take my kids all over the country and they are at an age where they are starting school' (link), which suggests to me that a 'big fish in a little pond' situation, like what he'd have at Heart, would be rather tempting for Holt. At Heart, he should pretty easily be able to star, and even be one of the best strikers in the league (assuming the rest of our squad is decent and provides Holt with service). So, Holt would likely have comfort and stability at Heart, which would be good for his family (no need to move around, etc.).

Now compare that to playing in an English league. Given his age, and the fact that Holt's not one of the best strikers in the premier league, Holt would have to really compete with other strikers just to play regularly. Also, there is a real chance that he'd either have to change clubs at the end of next season, or it would be in his best interests to change clubs at the end of next season. And then after that, the odds are still rather high that he wouldn't settle at his new club (given his age and the competition in the top 2 English divisions), and he might have to move clubs again. Michael Owen is a prime example of what might happen to Holt. Last season, aged just 32, he went to Stoke City, where he only made 8 appearances and scored only 1 goal. At the end of the season Owen retired, aged just 33.

I'm pleased that Heart have targeted Holt, because it is fairly likely that Holt would give us multiple quality seasons, whilst many other marquees (even probably Karagounis, someone I've argued for) would probably only give Heart 1 or 2 good seasons. The Norwich City transfer fee seems to be the main sticking point ATM. I'm of the opinion that the publicly stated figure of 2 million isn't as low as Norwich are prepared to go to sell Holt. It might take time for Norwich to change their mind, though. Time will tell.

Shit example, Owen was cut down by many injuries in his career, he was very fragile and his skill and pace had taken a hit.

Holt is a much fitter player and has been hardened in the lower leagues where they would play almost twice a week every week... he would cope fine in the crash and bash nature of this league while i really doubt someone like Owen could have delivered here...

As for the transfer fee, what's to say that any fee paid for Holt can't be recovered in any potential resale - even if it is in part?

Holt shirt sales will go nuts when his performances are so good he becomes the face of the league over Del Piero. No need for transfer.

Grant Holt is a much fitter player than Owen ever was, no question. And Holt's strong fitness for a player aged over 30 is another reason why he'd be an awesome signing for Heart.

I used Owen as an example just to state that even someone with a strong pedigree (Owen played +200 games at Liverpool, +30 at Real Madrid and +30 at Manchester United) would have to compete to play in the premier league when they are over 30. Owen wasn't injured for the whole of his season at Stoke, and Owen himself even said that he decided to retire because he was left on the bench so much at Stoke. Owen also said ‘It would be wrong to blame fitness’ and 'It is either the manager’s opinion I am not good enough or that I don’t fit into the system’, when explaining why he didn't play that many games with Stoke. I'm of the opinion that Owen would have been a significantly better player without his injury history, but it is also the case that injuries don't completely explain Owen's limited playing time and why he retired after one season at Stoke.

With Owen as an example or not, I still believe in my argument that very good players over 30 will have to compete, and will probably even struggle, to play regularly in the premier league. For that reason, as well as others, I'm hoping that Grant Holt will very seriously consider joining Heart, as I think he could have a great 3, 4 or even 5 seasons here.

I also agree that Heart could possibly sell Holt after a few seasons, because of his high fitness levels.

Norwich City striker Grant Holt remains a realistic transfer target for an ambitious Melbourne Heart according to CEO Scott Munn.

The Heart had a £2million ($3.1m) bid for the 32-year old forward rejected last week but Munn told Melbourne radio station SEN 1116 that the A-League outfit were still some sort of chance of luring the Canaries skipper to Australia.

"He's an interesting one. That's a bit more complicated," Munn said.

"He's the club captain there, and he's got two years to go but they've just spent eight-and-a-half million pounds on a Dutch striker (Ricky van Wolfswinkel). So clearly his position is under pressure.

"He played here as a 16, 17 year old in Perth, so we've talked to him, he's keen and he's certainly interested in Australia but the complexity is that he's still under contract and would need to be released."

Yeah, I noticed that article. I think he's largely just saying nice things to the local media, BBC Cumbria, who he's talking to in that article. Also, it sounds like he's answering a question with his quote ""I’ve always said I wanted to do it (play for Carlisle)".

Lastly, Holt is only 32, and Carlisle United play in England's 3rd division. Holt could conceivably play 3 or 4 seasons at Heart, and still go on to offer something to Carlisle United.

He's made that comment before when interviewed by BBC Cumbria. And as you say, there's nothing in coming to Heart that would prevent him from finishing his career with Carlisle.

Makes me think a year or two abroad before returning to his hometown club whilst still playing good football would make sense.

That said, it's easy to interpret such comments in a way when you really want it to happen!

A $3m transfer fee???? Plus a wage of up to $1m a season? We could fill both marquee spots with top players for that money. We could keep Garcia, offer up to maybe $2m to get Ambrosini, and have money left over for a good striker... The possibilities are incredible.

Look, Holt would be great. I have no problem with Grant Holt. But if you had that much money to spend, do you really think spending it on a transfer for Holt is the best way to use it?

I highly doubt it's that simple. I'd say a big chunk of that money would come from sponsors and the FFA who otherwise wouldn't be willing to part with such large amounts of money. Think of it like the Beckham deal we tabled. It's not like we had the money to pay him $200,000 a game and buy him a crown casino penthouse or whatever was offered. It's only being chipped for a marquee and not entirely coming out of the clubs pocket.

That being said, if it is just the club footing the bill then I agree it would be irresponsible and a waste of funds.

I'm sure you're right. But still, I find Holt with a $3m transfer a surprising target for whoever might be putting up such cash.
