Manchester City vs Melbourne Heart May20th Etihad Stadium

According to Wikipedia (the most reliable of sources, of course), the season finishes Sunday May 11.

That's a respectable amount of time between their last match and this Etihad match, which would allow a fair few top players to play IMO. Also, there's roughly 3 weeks until the World Cup after this match, I don't think the WC would prevent too many top players from playing in this match. I'm also pretty sure there's several player's in City's first team squad that won't be going to the WC.

I also think that Man City would want a fairly big crowd, so they wouldn't have much smaller crowds than Manchester United (who drew 83,000 to the All Stars match last year) and Liverpool (around 95,000 last year).

A final point. If it's the first match of a 'new' Melbourne Heart team, then they might want a fair few of the big names to play.

It will be interesting to see what Melbourne Heart is like by this match.

Should be a good, entertaining match. Looking forward to it.

Can't see City bringing many big names over considering the games scheduled for only a week after their last BPL game for the season.

Don't think anyone would/was expect that. Only a month out from WC, as if any player would want to risk missing that trough injury in a friendly.

Not if the Make the FA Cup final. Edited by LR9

I think it would be a mistake to not bring much/any big players to this match. It's not like they'd have to play the whole game, as they could just make several substitutions at half time and at 60 minutes (which is pretty standard for these matches). Also, it wouldn't reflect well on Melbourne Heart going forward if City were completely not serious with this match.

Heart, City can't hope to match Victory's Liverpool triumph

The joke's on us if Lescott & Richards are the main event

If reports Melbourne Heart will play Manchester City in Docklands on May 20 are confirmed, organisers should not expect to match the extraordinary success of Melbourne Victory's exhibition against Liverpool last July.

Fans must also temper their hopes of seeing the very best City stars Down Under.

The Nine Network on Thursday reported a game will take place between Heart and the English Premier League giants, whose owners completed a takeover of Victoria's newest A-League franchise in January.

The timing of the match is not ideal, but understandable given the constraints of a World Cup year.

Players will be allowed a holiday after the tournament in Brazil, followed by pre-arranged events like the International Champions Cup, which begins in July 24, and leads directly into the 2014-15 season.

Any ad-hoc tours or one-off appearances must be squeezed in before everything shuts down for the FIFA showcase in South America.

Final national team squads must be submitted no later than 10 days before the beginning of the tournament on June 12, and an expanded group of players will be in camp with their respective countries long before then.

That means Joe Hart and James Milner (England), Vincent Kompany (Belgium), Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Martin Demichelis (Argentina), Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas and David Silva (Spain), Edin Dzeko (Bosnia), Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri (France), Fernandinho (Brazil), and Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast) are all likely to be missing, unless City can squeeze in the trip before their players depart for international duty.

City's last game of the season will be at home to West Ham United on May 12, with England's first pre-World Cup friendly on May 31 against Peru, while Belgium are in action on May 26. There is a window of opportunity, but it is unlikely to be accommodating to the needs of a money-spinning promotional jaunt.

If the big guns are absent, Micah Richards, Jolean Lescott and Jack Rodwell, all set to be overlooked by Roy Hodgson, Aleksander Kolarov, Javi Garcia and Steven Jovetic will be among the best the travelling party have to offer.

However, even if it was a City team guaranteed to be at full-strength, the chances of interest levels matching those witnessed for the visit of Liverpool are remote.

The simple reason for that is City, for so long the underachieving poor relation of Manchester United, do not command the long-held, deep-rooted affection Liverpool enjoy among Australian footballer supporters.

Rather than aspire to compete with a sold-out MCG and its stirring rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone", a game between City and Heart should be measured against the visits of Everton, Celtic and Olympiakos in recent years.

The friendly between Victory and LA Galaxy in 2011 attracted 34,000 supporters, and organisers should be more than satisfied if they can match that.

P.S. I think Strachan is maybe a bit off with his judgement about Man City and their big players with regards to this match, but it is probably almost certain that at least a few key City players will be omitted.

Manchester City in negotiations to tour Australia to play Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar

David Davutovic

March 27, 2014

ENGLISH Premier League heavyweight Manchester City could be touring Australia in May, with a match against Melbourne Heart at Etihad Stadium mooted.

But City officials on Thursday night denied that a deal had been sealed amid reports that the tour was due to kick off against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium just days after their final game of the season at home to West Ham.

“There is always significant speculation surrounding Manchester City Football Club’s out of season itinerary,” the statement said.

“However, with the exception of our July trip to the USA for the Guinness International Cup and fixture against MLS winners Sporting Kansas City, there has been no decision made regarding location, dates or opponents for any other off-season activity. Any commentary to the contrary is completely without foundation.”

It’s understood negotiations are advanced, but both games are still subject to funding approval from the Victorian and Queensland state governments. Talks are ongoing.

Should the tour go ahead it would mark the commencement of City’s relationship with brother club Heart after the $11.25m takeover in January from Peter Sidwell and the founding ownership group.

City players bound for the 2014 World Cup would be excluded from the touring party under FIFA regulations, but the squad would still include the likes of Jack Rodwell, Micah Richards and Aleksandar Kolarov with manager Manuel Pellegrini at the helm.

City is due to play its final game of the season on May 12, when they hope to be crowned Premier League champions for the second time in three years.

Pellegrini’s side is currently third, three points behind leaders Chelsea with two games in hand ahead of Sunday morning’s crucial clash away to Arsenal.

Call me cynical but I can't see it drawing 30,000 on a Tuesday night with most of city's stars missing.

Me? Ill be all over it but I can't imagine that this will draw people out en masse

Yes a Tuesday night isn't the best night. Also the fact it's WC year will definitely mean those players who are playing in it won't be in Melbourne.

Maybe if we win the League then that will attract a few more people.

Has to be at AAMI. That's the home of Melbourne Heart. And discounts for long-suffering Heart members thanks very much. But there won't be, because this will be a promoter putting on this match, not MCFC, and that's why "funding from the Victorian Government" is mentioned.

I'll watch from the pub if it's at Etihad Stadium.

The Gertrude Hotel is fast becoming a favourite. Cheap craft beer, Foxtel, right next to the Commission flats, and sweet sweet transvestites. What more could you want.

Half price condom vending machines?
