Getting nervous about this one now. Can't go in expecting anything.

Play the way we have been, and we'll be right. Let our guard down and it could get nasty.

Meh, nothing worry about mate! Newcastle is still shyte and Clayton has no idea how he fluked the win against NRMAW! Speaking of which I've always thought the Wanderers were batting above their average and it was inevitable that the day they'd get grounded would come a la the loss to the Jets!

I too am getting nervous but I think it's natural when you're a Heart supporter who's felt the lowest lows and last week (and the week before (and week before that)) the highest highs!

Orlando will put Zadkovich in his place, Murdocca will run rings around Brillante and Kisnorbo will headbutt Heskey out of action all whilst Harry and David put a couple passed Birighitti!

Having already well and truly broken our away hoodoo, I'm feeling another Heart win!

Taggart's the one I'm worried about.

There's a few tactical plays they seem to repeat each game. Quite often birighitti will look to release the ball long looking for heskey. They also tend to favour attacking up the right hand wing, particularly during first halves. Taggart is definitely one to watch although I'm confident in our central defenders and I think someone like germano can really close him down for most of the game providing he is fit.

Preview: Newcastle Jets v Melbourne Heart

By Paul Barbieri

Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Heart will meet in Round 22 of the 2013-14 A-League season at Hunter Stadium on Saturday, March 8 at 5.30pm (AEDT).

Head-to-head:

Played 11 - Wins: Newcastle 5, Melbourne Heart 4, Draws: 2

Previous encounter:

Melbourne Heart 3 - 1 Newcastle Jets, January 17 2014

Form:

Past five matches

Newcastle Jets: WLWLD

Melbourne Heart: WWWWW

The Game:

Melbourne Heart travel to Newcastle on the back of a five-match winning run, with the club looking to maintain their charge up the A-League ladder. Newcastle on the other hand, appear to have stabilised a little under new coach Clayton Zane, the Jets having defeated top sides Brisbane and Western Sydney for two wins in their last three games after a poor start to his tenure.

Both sides, though, will be looking to put some poor stats behind them in such fixtures. For Heart, the Victorian team has never picked up a point from matches in Newcastle, so history is somewhat against them pulling off a win in this encounter.

But at the same time, Heart can take some … errr heart …. from the fact Newcastle have the worst home record of any side in A-League this season, the Jets having picked up just 10 points at Hunter Stadium.

The Big Issue:

Although Newcastle put two past Western Sydney last weekend, the Jets still need to find their scoring mojo on a more consistent basis.

Newcastle have failed to score in nine matches so far this term, the most of any A-League side. However, in the last few weeks, they have started turning this around and with Joel Griffiths, Emile Heskey and Adam Taggart all working well in tandem as a three-pronged forward combination against Wanderers, Heart may have to watch their backs somewhat.

For Heart, there really aren't too many worries at present, although they may struggle to recognise which Jet is which after a mass shaving of heads in the name of charity. Heart, though, are far and away the competition's form team, although no other side this term has managed to make it six consecutive wins, so they have that against them. But when your'e flying, you're flying and as a result the main problem coach John van 't Schip has is at the selection table.

One imagines Aziz Behich, suspended for last week, will come straight back into the side to replace the excellent Ben Garrucio at left back, with van 't Schip left to try and work out how the hell he slots a fit-again Harry Kewell into his in-form midfield.

The game breaker:

For Heart, Mate Dugandzic seems the main man. On top of scoring a spectacular goal in last week's Melbourne Derby – we're not convinced his cross-cum-shot was ever intended to hit the back of the net – the right winger has also laid off four assists with three of them coming in the last three games.

For Newcastle, Taggart is the main man in a big way, the striker having scored 10 goals or 46 percent of his side's overall scores for the campaign. This reliance on Taggart is the highest of any A-League club this season.

Prediction: Melbourne Heart 3 Newcastle Jets 1

Not a huge amount of logic to this one, considering Heart's poor record in Newcastle, but the Melbourne side are riding one serious wave of form and with van 't Schip in charge, have the ability to translate that into more wins.

Van 't Schip is one of the more astute strategic minds in the local game and may just have a bit too much nous in this area for Zane. Add in Newcastle's poor home record and another Melbourne Victory should be on the cards.

What, no Mifsud again??? Looks like Carney will have to pick up all the defensive slack in front of Newcastle's goals now!

In this week’s stat attack we take a look at our opponents this weekend, Newcastle Jets, as well as a number of key and interesting statistics about Melbourne Heart’s season so far.

Melbourne Heart made it five wins from five games on Saturday with a 4-0 win, our biggest ever home win, in the Melbourne Derby at AAMI Park. No side has won six in a row in the A-League this season, so a win for Melbourne Heart against the Jets would make them the first.

Heart would also set a new season record for consecutive games unbeaten in the A-League if they can avoid defeat against the Jets.

But John van’t Schip’s men have only scored one goal in their last three visits to the Hunter Valley, and have never even picked up a point at the Jets’ home ground.

Despite that, Heart are in the equal best form in the club’s history with the 2011-12 side also picking up five consecutive wins over the course of December of that season.

dugandzic_zps558cb4e3.png

Here are a collection of stats in relation to our clash against the Jets and from our season so far.

20 – Melbourne Heart have won the most points in the A-League in 2014 so far.

9 - Newcastle Jets have failed to score in nine A-League games this season; more often than any other side.

10 - Newcastle Jets have the worst points tally at home in the A-League this season.

5 – Melbourne Heart have failed to pick up a point against the Jets at Hunter Stadium in all their appearances at the ground.

46% - Adam Taggart has scored almost half of his sides goals in the A-League this season, which included a hat-trick against Heart back in November.

10.6% - Newcastle Jets have the worst shot conversion in the league.

11 – Melbourne Heart have scored the most set piece goals in the league this season. Five set plays, three corners, two penalties and one direct free-kick.

4 – Melbourne Heart became the only side to score more than three goals in a Melbourne Derby on Saturday night.

443 – Melbourne Heart have sent in 443 crosses so far this season with an accuracy of 22.% percent, which is the league's third best.

8 – Melbourne Heart have scored the most long-range goals so far this season.

4% - Of goals scored by Heart between the 16th and 30th minute mark this season.

5 – Melbourne Heart have scored the equal most headers in the league in 2013-14.

0 – Melbourne Heart haven’t lost this season after scoring the first goal.

3 – Mate Dugandzic has assisted a goal in each of his last three appearances.

10 – David Williams has now become the highest goalscorer for Melbourne Heart in a single season.

1.  Didn't we beat them that day when Kalmar did that bicycle volley kick and scored?

2.  Being the glass is half empty kind of guy, Duga's stanout stat is his goals scored.

We did. That match was played at Port Macquarie. Hunter Stadium had been cut to pieces by a moto-cross event held there a few days earlier.

Anyway, most important game of the season for us. As is each one from now on assuming we go on collecting points. JvS

has not only made us look at least respectable, he has taken us from nowhere into the chasing pack. What both JvS and the players now have to show is that they are worthy of being where they are and indeed are good enough to keep winning and beating the sides around us. If our season fizzles out now then the squad will not have done itself justice after all.

A must-win match.

Didn't we draw 1-1 against them in our second game when Kantarovski scored our clubs first ever goal...?  :lawl:  :lawl:  :lawl:

Pretty much agree with that. I still prefer using BG as an impact sub in the second half. Provided the winner v Perth doing similair. I think he is too promising as a winger to be converted to a defender just yet. Especially when we have AB in specifically for that spot. To be honest BG was barely tested defensively in the derby so I don't think we can really judge his credentials defensively from that one game.

Redmayne

Hoffman Wielaert Kisnorbo Behich

Germano Murdocca

Engelaar

Dugandzic Williams Ramsay

Bench: Velaphi, Kewell, Gerhardt, Garrucio, Kalmar/Mauk

Pretty straight forward IMO. The real question is which one of Kalmar or Mauk will be left out of the squad. Going by the fact that JVS chose to bring on Kalmar last week instead of Mauk, and also Kalmar picking up an assist and playing quite well when he's come off the bench recently, i think we'll see Mauk being completely left out of the squad for this week.

As for Garrucio, fair enough that Behich replaces him at left back, but i think he'll be given his chance very soon with Ramsay being 1 yellow card off a weeks suspension, so i'll expect to see him starting in the game against Wellington or CCM at left wing.

That first question "So John, another chance for another victory tomorrow"...

And JVS's response was gold: "every time you play a game there's a chance to win, to lose. or to make a draw so that's really true what you're saying".

Big grin.

Agree, JVS is great when responding to inane questions, which will hopefully make journalists ask smarter questions in the future.

I fully agree with heart_fan10's line-up. The only difference is that I think Kewell might start in place of Ramsay or Williams. Mostly probably Ramsay.
