Superb victory. So enjoyable given how the season started.

Engelaar MOTM for me. A truly massive presence in midfield, in every sense. Cracking first goal, magnificent assist for the second goal and just great passing and midfield bossing throughout the match.

What an enigma is David Williams. Misses an easy chance inside the box in the first 15 min, then scores a very good lob, a tidy second goal and a great third strike. Maybe he's a confidence player, and understandably his confidence must have been up going into this match. I've doubted him, and I've still got questions about him (especially since he reportedly is our 'Australian marquee'), but with this match he put forward a pretty good case to be re-signed for next season.

And massive credit has to go to JVS. Utterly superb coaching, and the contrast between him and Aloisi is so so stark. JVS perfectly got it right marking Hernandez out of the game with Gerhardt, and the team's possession is light years ahead of where it was under JA. We're playing like a real team now and we go forward with such purpose and smarts. JVS continues to build a pretty respectable case to keep his job for next season.

Such an enjoyable game, and am really looking forward to our remaining matches (didn't think I'd say that 6 or so weeks ago).

I agree. Engelaar was off the pace (understandably) but his touch and vision was superb. With mauk playing the way he is and OE providing some class in midfield, is Kewell a bit redundant now? Weilart is much more commanding as captain too

Agree Wielaert is a great vocal captain. I also reckon he's a great passer and a smart defender (who's smart enough to to compensate for arguably his one weakness, his decreasing athleticism).

I think Kewell is still a very useful player, and he might return to the starting line-up when he's fit again. He has put in 4 MOTM performances this season, still has that aura of class about him and lift's the team when he's playing.

Thankfully, there are so many good players ATM there are selection headaches. Which is welcome, as I reckon JVS will get the most out of the squad.

Wellington Phoenix 0-5 Melbourne Heart: David Williams leads demolition job The New Zealand side's recent run of good form came to an abrupt halt as the team in red and white ran amok at the 'Cake Tin'

By Iain Strachan

Melbourne Heart's remarkable revival under John van' t Schip shows no sign of stopping after they thrashed Wellington Phoenix 5-0 away from home on Sunday.

David Williams' hat-trick, together with goals from Dutch duo Orlando Engelaar and Robbie Wielaert, made it three victories in successions for Heart, who have now won four of their last five games and are unbeaten since January 10.

The Phoenix had been one of the form teams in the A-League going into the clash at Westpac Stadium, but they had no answer to the inspired visitors.

Heart remain bottom of the table but are only seven points off sixth-placed Sydney and by no means out of finals contention, a notion that would have been inconceivable following their nightmare start to the 2013-14 season.

Having recorded their first genuine away win since December 2011 in the most emphatic fashion imaginable, the biggest test yet for Van 't Schip's side will arrive with the visit of league leaders Brisbane Roar to AAMI Park next Sunday.

Somewhat surprisingly, Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick made four changes to a winning team, with Michael Boxall, Jeremy Brockie, Kenny Cunningham and Jason Hicks, a goal-scorer off the bench in a 3-2 triumph away to Newcastle Jets last weekend, all coming into the team. Tyler Boyd, Matthew Ridenton, Josh Brindell-South and Reece Caira were the players to make way.

Williams, a match-winning substitute in Heart's previous two fixtures, replaced the injured Harry Kewell in the visitors' starting XI. Patrick Gerhardt and Engelaar, available after serving a suspension,  came into midfield for Jonatan Germano and Stefan Mauk.

Heart's strong start to the game saw Engelaar open the scoring in the ninth minute, the marquee international powering home a firm strike from just outside the area after Wellington failed to clear their lines.

The Phoenix conspired to gift the away side a second goal 10 minutes later, when goalkeeper Glen Moss charged off his line in an ill-judged attempt to intercept a quick free-kick.

Moss found himself stranded in no-man's land and Williams, still with plenty to do, was able to direct a well-taken finish into an empty net.

The Phoenix had scored 15 goals in their last six matches going into this game, but there was no sign of that attacking fluency in the first 45 minutes, with Carlos Hernandez's set-pieces providing their only threat.

The game was over as a contest five minutes into the second half, when Massimo Murdocca won possession near the half-way line, springing a fast counterattack and exchanging passes with Williams, who capped off the move by slamming a cool finish underneath Moss.

The onslaught continued four minutes later, Wielaert smacking a shot against the crossbar which rebounded off the back of the unfortunate Moss and into the net for 4-0.

And a few minutes past the hour mark, Williams completed his hat-trick, curling a brilliant long-range strike to the far post and beyond the reach of the beleaguered Wellington goalkeeper.

The thrashing was a rude interruption to the previously resurgent Phoenix, who had playmaker Hernandez comprehensively shackled by Gerhardt and suffered as a consequence.

Having slipped outside the top six, they must now prepare themselves for a difficult game away to reigning champions Central Coast on Friday night.

Melbourne Heart 5 (Engelaar 9', Williams 19', 51', 63', Wielaert 54')

Wellington Phoenix 0

I finished work late so had to tape the match but thankfully didn't have the result ruined for me.

I'd just like to start with a massive round of applause for JVS, thank you for turning our calamitous season around and giving hope to us diehard Heart fans once again, what an absolutely breathtaking way to FINALLY snap our torrid away-game losing streak.

Wellington defence was shambles all game but the vision in midfield (primarily Orlando) combined with exquisite finishing and stifling defence was just beautiful, this is the first truly perfect game I think I've ever seen us play.

I would give a 3-2-1 but there were too many great players on the park today so I'm going to do a 5-4-3-2-1!

5 - Engelaar

4 - Williams

3 - Wielaert

2 - Gerhardt

1 - Dugandzic

Immense game, probably the happiest and proudest I've ever been of the club. Well done lads, enjoy this fucking fantastic win guys

Only woke up to see the second half, as I wasn't really expecting too much. At first it looked like they'd try and defend a 2nil lead, but when Davey williams and Mass broke to score the 3rd I was put into a state of shock, couldn't believe we were winning 5-0 away. It was hands down the best game I've seen us play in 4 seasons, we looked so confident on the ball, and passing was great (only a few turn overs or wayward passes). Engelaar in the middle was a beast, but I also thought that Behich and Hoff put in solid games.

Can anyone tell me what the first half was like? Similar standard or did we get better throughout?

Similar standard, if not better.

Completely dominated from start to finish, Wellington's best period was probably between the 35th and half time but even then we were dangerous on the counter.

A little bit of confidence goes a long long way.

A tactical coach that brings confidence goes just as far.

We NO LONGER hear bullshit excuses.

Hats off to JVS for rescuing a sinking ship with minimal fuss.

A club that no one wanted to play for, a club with endless offers!!

The future is bright, the future is RED!!

JVS in the post-match presser:

[For the Brisbane match next week] we'll have to make some changes, Robbie Wielaert will not play because of a suspension, have to see how far we can come with players coming back, Germano and maybe Harry.

Would like to know what exactly the story is with Germano. At least it's being suggested that he could return.

Good to hear JVS suggesting that Harry might be back as well, as it suggests that his injury isn't bad.

Nonetheless, after our recent games I'm confident we'll have a good line-up against Brisbane.

Redders (was very solid saving tame shots that he otherwise would have found a way to somehow get us nervous)

Hoff (in great form) - Paddy G - Paddy K - Behich

                     Mass - Germano

                       Orlando

Mate                Williams              Ramsay

Tando - Kewell - Mauk - Garuccio - Vrankovic - Kalmar  (one of these must miss out)

Hoffman still has a long way to go. He needs to start transitioning from a reactive player to a proactive player. There were times when we had the ball in the middle with acres of space on the right, But Hoffman did not push up to provide width.

Just to add to this, he goes forward at the wrong times. Several times in today's match he was up in the final third for no particular reason, when we already had enough numbers, with no cover behind him. Just overall has poor awareness and doesn't have any football smarts.

Don't see the harm in giving Walker a run for the rest of the season, especially with how confident we are playing at the moment, would be good for the kid.
