Omar Abdulrahman is fucking incredible, easily the best player at this tournament. Took the piss that whole game.

Thinking of putting a fiver on the UAE to make the final or maybe just to get over Japan depending on odds.

Decided I'll drop $10 on an Oman/UAE final.

Nope.

Did you watch the Bahrain game? He over hit every second pass and got muscled off the ball alot, sure he can turn and do the simple things but you just pop Mike Jedinak on him and he'll crumble.

KI wouldn't say he ios the best player, but he is fucking good. Could be playing in any league in Europe. But too much money in the UAE.

The simple things? This bloke is consistently playing 30+ yard balls perfectly to people's feet and can beat player after player in one/two/three on ones. Also gets pretty stuck in for how good he is. Could easily go down the Balotelli route and just wander around the pitch and contribute when he feels like it, but he's chasing down balls and trying to win back the ball on the odd occasion he losses it.

Asian David Silva with a bit of Hazard thrown in. Could walk into 97% of European clubs starting XI's

Also, the standard in general of this tournament has really surprised me. I gotta admit I haven't watched a lot of Asian football outside of the odd ACL game and Socceroos match so I came into this relatively blind expecting everyone outside of the big three (didn't expect much from Australia) to be pretty shit, but I've seen some pretty great stuff from us, China, UAE, Bahrain, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia etc. far beyond my expectations anyway. Don't know how I'm going to go back to watching the A-League after this.

Honestly, I expected more from the Arab teams. I thought the Arab leagues had a lot more Omar Abdulrahmans, blokes who could be playing in the top European leagues but they get paid too much in the ME to move. The Saudi Arabia team is pretty weak compared to Saudi Arabia teams of the past it would seem, but that was pretty clear heading in to the tournament so that's not a big surprise. Some of the goalkeeping has been extremely poor. Probably expected a bit more from Uzbekistan too. People don't realise the Uzbek league is also a pretty decent standard with a surprising amount of money so you can end up with some good unknown players there too.

One surprising thing, I only saw the first Iraq game, but the left back Dhurgham Ismail looked like a very good young player, how he is playing in the Iraqi league I dont know.

He fucks up just as many of those chip passes he makes. Sure he takes the piss but look at the opponents his up against. His club is probably the best in the whole gulf region, they truly take the piss. Look at Gyans stats for the past couple season. It's a joke.

Id hope he runs balls dowm, hes a midfielder!

Would be a decent player for a mid table La Liga team, his knees would last 5 minutes in the EPL.

Can someone enlighten me as I don't really understand the tiebreak rules for the Asian Cup, but what happens if Jordan somehow beat Japan tonight and Iraq beat Palestine as expected?

Tiebreakers

The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in the following order:[24]

  1. Greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned
  2. Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned
  3. Greater number of goals scored in the group matches between the teams concerned
  4. Goal difference in all the group matches
  5. Greater number of goals scored in all the group matches
  6. Penalty shoot-out if only two teams are involved and they are both on the field of play
  7. Lower score calculated according to the number of yellow and red cards received in the group matches (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card)
  8. Drawing of lots

So if Jordan beat Japan with a result better than 1-0, they finish top of the group...

And if they win 1-0, then it goes down to group goal difference which means Iraq would have to score 5 goals against Palestine and only concede 1 at most, I THINK.

Interesting, I like it and it makes sense. would be highly unlikely but if possible would be better than lots

Pretty disappointed with tonight's offering TBH. The least enjoyable of all of them so far. My first time seeing Japan, but I didn't think the game reached any great heights. They did enough to win over a toothless Jordanian side, but that was about it. Good crowd, but didn't have the same atmosphere as any of the previous games.

Hoping for more with South Korea versus the Uzbeks.

Also, fuck the Mexican Wave

Yes. Annoys me too. It seems to have started in the past two games or so? Either that or my memory is shorter than I hoped!

Eh, it rippled around in the opener against Kuwait and I've seen it a bit since... it's just terrible.

Anyone fancy the UAE upsetting Japan? Japan haven't looked amazing but they still manage to get the job done, but the UAE have some really talented players.

Japan need to get rid of their manager Aguirre.

After the WC, I would have thought their assessment would be:

Strengths: technique, passing, ball control, possession, speed.  Weakness: aerial, lack of target man.

So Aguirre builds a game plan to play long balls out by the keeper with Honda and Endo contesting headers, and lofted balls and crosses to a 5' 4" striker,

I would not be surprised if they go out in the quarters unless they really go up a few gears.  Which might not be bad for them as that would put Aguirre in the hot seat.

I was actually most impressed with Japan's defensive shape across the whole park, whenever Jordan won back the ball they virtually had nowhere to go because every option was blocked by a Japanese player.

That said, I still don't think they're nearly at their best and I just think they could slip up if they fail to get out of 1st gear against the UAE. Should be a good one to watch for the neutral anyway!

They haven't conceded a goal. I think people are underestimating Japan, South Korea and Iran because they're playing defensive. They're all still the big 3 challengers to Australia and should only really be tested when playing each other and us.

Having said that, you never know, if the UAE can score the first goal then it's their game to lose.

Gee, I hope Uzbekistan vs South Korea tonight wraps up within the 90... otherwise I'll be struggling to get home to catch the Australia vs China game.

I'm recording the Socceroos game just in case I don't get back in time. Will then just watch the recording and fast forward thru half time.
