Our Marquee Man...

Would have been a superb acquisition, even as a marquee player a few years ago but at 35, this potential signing has Melbourne Heart written all over it...

“We’ll see what happens but I wouldn’t mind trying it to be fair but I have to get back fit first, I’ve got a screw in my knee now and a screw in the knee of a jinky winger doesn’t really go hand in hand but we’ll see what happens".

Also not liking the sound of this "only playing for the second half of the season" stuff, alarm bells are definitely ringing.

My comment: If true we are not even being treated as third class compared to the Major League side that CFG owns and starts playing next year. Where are our marquees with the quality of Villa and Lampard?

I wouldn't stress too much about that article. It says that he is joining Melbourne city, lucky were Melbourne heart so he won't be joining us

Maybe I've referred to the same article as you, which says "Duff will take a summer break with his family before moving to Melbourne for the second part of their season. He has had his pick of A-League sides, including Heart’s city rivals Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC and Perth Glory. City’s backers are prepared to match Duff’s wage demands."

However, I don't believe that Duff could pick and choose between 4 A League sides, as as if they were all desperate to sign him and had tabled offers. More like it his agent had offered him to those sides.

Not going to be a popular call, but  I've seen a fair bit of Chuks Aneke and if we could get him under the cap he'd actually be a pretty sneaky foreign signing.

Spent this season in league 1 and scored 14 goals and racked up about 8 or 9 assists in 40 games as a CM/Number 10. He's tall (6ft 3), built pretty big and has an eye for a pass and a goal.

Not excited at the talk of Duff, in his day he was a brilliant player but he seems a bit knackered (especially with the knee situation) and we don't have a lot of luck with injury prone players.

Chuks has scored 20 goals this year in League 1. I have been watching him all year because I follow Crewe he was the sole reason we stayed up. Having him under the cap would be near impossible however as he has offers from Charlton, Peterborough, Walsall, BlackPool, Wolves and Crewe (though we would probably pay more then Crewe). I highly doubt he would be open to a move because he has stated previously he wanted a step up to the Championship. If we could get him he would dominate the A-League but without using the marquee spot it would be unlikely.

Nicklas Bendtner

What a sight it would be, to see the greatest striker that ever lived gracing the AAMI pitch.

I can see it now....walking around at half pace when we're 2-1 down, chewing on his gum like a massive lazy cow.

Unless we are talking a well known champion like Frank Lampard who is injury free and has still been playing regular top quality football for one of the biggest clubs in Chelsea, I'm not interested in us signing 35 year olds as marquees.

We need to get rid of the view that the best quality up and coming Australians should not be playing here and must play overseas. I see no reason why we can't have a Socceroo regular who plays his entire career here.

The money in my opinion would be far better spent on keeping some of the best up and coming A League talent here, playing for us, such as signing a proven A League goal scorer with plenty of upside in his game on a big money deal like Adam Taggart.

Or making a big money play for someone like Tommy Oar or Robbie Kruse. I'm sure we could offer them MORE than they are currently being paid overseas.

For the last time, Tommy Oar and Robbie Kruse are not going to leave Europe when they're still young and playing regularly, ya fucken Parrot.

The A-League is not big enough, strong enough, is only 27-matches (plus play-offs) and is in a place so far away from everywhere else that no-one cares what goes on here. If you've ever been overseas and tried to find out news from "home" you'll know what I mean.

If our clubs were playing 40+ matches a season in an Asian Super League then maybe. But not in the A-League as it is.

A player's career is very short, and can easily be cut shorter by injury. They have to do the best for themselves that they can. We can't blame them for that, and that means play in a bigger league if they can.

Marn11, when you resort to personal abuse and gutter language it means you are losing an argument.

We should not see ourselves as a lavish pre-retirement home, offering very good money to a player ready to retire after a season or two with us.

We need to think bigger and act bigger.

Every player has his price. Offered enough money, we can attract a Tommy Oar or Robbie Kruse or keep the most outstanding A League talent here for a number of years instead of rushing overseas.

It's not a perfect example at all, Rogic hasn't done anything overseas in Europe yet apart from play a handful of games for a team that's too good for the league it's in, and he only returned on loan as a result of getting no football.

Kruse and Oar have been playing regular competitive football and are both playing in leagues significantly better than the A-League and Kruse is now with one of the biggest clubs in the Bundesliga, you're having an absolute laugh if you think we could attract either of them whilst they're still only in their early-mid 20's and playing in such leagues.

Agree with parrot. Rogic is a perfect example.

Actually he is a terrible example. :droy:

He was loaned to the A League by Celtic for game time not lured to the A League for good money.

Oar and Kruse are actually playing first team football in Europe.

It's not just about money for most young Aussie players.

I'm sure most of them would actually accept less to play in Europe (if it even came down to that anyway, footballers like Kruse and Oar would be earning more where they are than what we'd be willing to pay them) as opposed to the A-League if it came down to it. Players want to play on big stages, compete for trophies with a strong history/importance and play for their country amongst other factors of which money is obviously one, the A-League currently delivers on none of those factors when comparing to a career in Europe . Players like Oar and Kruse are not going to leave first team European football to come and play in the A-League.

The other thing with Oar and Kruse is that, for those that care about the national side, would it be the best thing for the Socceroos to have them playing here? There may be some benefit in having them closer to the national team and more readily available for friendlies and lowly qualifiers, but wouldn't that be more than offset by playing every week in a far lower standard to what they are in now? Rogic barely played for Celtic, but if Oar and Kruse are good enough to hold their own in two of the top leagues in the world, then I'd rather they stayed there, to be honest. I think it's a pretty safe bet that it's going to be better for their long-term development in the green and gold than dominating the A-League. It's just a trade-off of supporting a team in a league that is a relative minnow on the world scale.

If you had the chance who would you rather play with and against the top players in the world at the top of the sport or a 4th-5th (?) tier league like the ALeague?

Even I if was to earn more most players when you are talking the crazy money the top stars make would rather test themselves against the best

Can't be the international marquee signing. That victory (who have already used up their Int. marquee spot) offered him a deal makes me think Duff wasn't looking at marquee deals (maybe Perth, but it looks like they recruiting on the cheap for next season). Also, I don't see Sydney FC going from ADP to Duff, and Sydney have already said they want to sign another big name marquee like Lampard or Forlan, so I can't see Sydney offering Duff an international marquee deal.

Duff would be a pretty good salary cap visa player, and a sign that this club wants immediate success if he's 'the new normal' kind of signing that we can look forward to.

If he's our international marquee it would be a terrible waste of our international marquee spot. And it would have been much much more worthwhile for us to keep Engelaar, if only because Engelaar's a central midfielder, and Duff is a winger, and the idea of getting a marquee winger, and especially a 35 year old injured marquee winger, makes very little sense.

We'll see how this club is being run when Duff's contract details are made clear, and the club will rightly be judged heavily when those details are known.

Another thing. Heart have been credibly linked with Joe Cole (source), and both the Daily Mail, and now the Guardian, are reporting that Heart tried to sign Lampard before NYCFC did (I assume it's done). So it looks like Heart is targeting a midfielder to be the club's international marquee, so suddenly signing a winger as our international marquee would be inconsistent with previous reporting.

Also, I can see the club signing multiple players with Premier League experience, at clubs other than Manchester City, to show that this club isn't just a mini-Manchester City built for Man City supporters (and IMO they have a fair bit of work to do there...). So given that point, the signing of Duff under the cap would make good sense.
