MaliMate
Looks like Fred will be out for a few weeks & without Bolton you would think Garcia would take the armband. But IMO Garcia isn't the type of player that needs the 'leader' tag as it is quite obvious he is a natural. I think giving Shime the armband could prove to be effective as we're on a nice run this year and it could boost his confidence even more. Bozza
Fred must take pay cut to stay. A BIG one Garcia as captain I think makes perfect sense and should be done next season

mulhollanddrive
Garcia's our best player by far. We need to continue targetting the best returning Socceroos, underage NT players, and creative and technical foreigners.

belaguttman
Fred was a good choice for a captain to lead by example, however he has to be playing 90 minutes each game for this to be effective. I remember Madaschi's surprise when he arrived at how quiet our players were on the park, you can see the change his arrival brought about. We need a player who can be a loud on-field general, Colosimo never fitted that bill, neither does Fred. Garcia or Grella would be the 2 best options, if he were fit I would favour Grella as he's already been captain of Torino in Serie A, but given the reality, Garcia would be a great choice. jw1739
Will he stay on beyond this year? Richard Garcia was signed for one season only. So before we make him captain we will need to re-sign him. He's 31, will be 32 in September. I hope we can sign him for another 2-3 years. our second highest paid player is an impact sub? Whose our first highest paid player? Last season our highest-paid player was reportedly Simon Colosimo on $214,000 p.a. Fred was on $200,000 p.a. We need on-field leadership. The kind that organise the guys when we're falling into a rut and give them a gee-up. Grella would be my choice if he was fit but Garcia next with PG as deputy. Forget Thomo and Colosimo. Edited January 19, 2013 by HEARTinator

Sash
I agree that we should be doing everything we can to keep him. Make him captain, and use some of the extra 'warchest' Sidwell was talking about today if we have to. If any of Clolosimo, Fred or Thomo are given contracts for next year, they would have to be on hugely reduced wages, hopefully freeing up a fair bit too. Popular Post Red or Dead
I just contacted Wrigley about this: -------------------------------------------- To whom it may concern, I'm writing to you as an avid Melbourne Heart supporter and Wrigley's Extra gum enthusiast. I'd like to bring it to your attention that one of our most high-profile players, Richard Garcia (also a Socceroo) loves chewing Wrigley's Extra gum whilst playing football and during all his interviews. I was thinking there may be a great opportunity for Wrigley, Melbourne Heart and Richard Garcia to strike-up a partnership where Richard Garcia (and Melbourne Heart) could endorse and advertise Extra 'Active' gum. Extra 'Active' for the Active footballer. If Wrigley became a sponsor of Melbourne Heart, especially by advertising that one of our Socceroos and star player chews Wirgley's Extra 'Active' gum, I think the benefits would be advantageous for all parties involved. As a fond chewer of Wrigley's Extra 'Active' (Airwaves come a close second) and a foundation member of Melbourne Heart, I would love to see a relationship develop between the two. For general information Melbourne Heart can be contacted on 03 9457 1765 or info@melbourneheartfc.com.au. For Sponsorship information you can email, tiffany.hanna@melbourneheartfc.com.au. Alternatively more information is available at: http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/melbourneheart/contact. Many thanks, I...

Bozza
Captaincy should NEVER be a part of a players contract.
Sash
True, but it doesn't have to be part of his contract. 'Richie, we want you to stay and captain the club next season.' Then talk to his agent about money and contract details.
Jimmy
Captains role is over rated imo. Leaders will establish themselves in the group regardless of if they have a pretty little band or not.
jw1739
Before the captaincy issue arises, what are our chances of re-signing him anyway? He's 31 and still wants to play for the NT. Is Heart the vehicle to display his talents? I reckon our chance of keeping him is 50:50.
