Nobody outside of soccer fans have heard of Tim Cahill? Surely this is a pisstake? Aside from Ronaldo and Messi there is no bigger name in world football for the average Aussie. You mention the name Tim Cahill and everyone knows exactly who you're talking about. Tim Cahill is an Australian icon and everyone I know who knows nothing about soccer knows Tim Cahill! Will he improve our team? Probably not. Would he be a massive name and draw in fans like crazy? Yes. No question.

We should be marketing our club, not relying on a player with past reputation. Last season we should have marketed City using Fornaroli and Mooy so that the talk now would not be about who we might sign but the impact the potential loss of Bruno and Aaron on City and the whole league. We had the two hottest properties in the league playing in City shirts and we did fuck-all with the opportunities that created.

Brattan is not even close to Mooy's quality, plus they play in different midfield positions. The replacement for Mooy will need to be a Visa marque.

We haven't moved too far in 200+ years. Those look astonishingly like convict transportation records!

Unless Bruno remains under the cap, I wouldn't even consider signing Cahill until we get a replacement for Mooy

Still in the best 2 or 3 tonight. Even Barcelona and Real Madrid don't win every game and there are generally few good performances when a team loses. He proved him self against England and Greece in the previous matches. In fact, he has shown he is close to being the best outfield player Australia has. There seems to be this issue in this country that people think our league is so far off the top leagues in the world that our players aren't good enough for that level. Mooy has proven in these internationals that he is. There are worse leagues in the world that have players moving straight to the best leagues in Europe, no reason why the best (or second best after Bruno) player in a decent league like the a-league can't cut it at any club apart from maybe the best 10-15 clubs in Europe. These international matches have left me way more confident that Mooy can play in the EPL or even a better league, and since he has an EU passport and will probably be a reasonably cheap transfer I'm sure clubs are literally lineing up for him (and if the rumours are true then they are, he has been linked with at least 10 clubs in Europe by now)

Everyone in the media seems to want City to take on the burden of bringing Cahill to the a-league...how many of the media are City fans? Fact is that I can only see this being detrimental to the performance of the team. Knowing our luck, could be Josh Kennedy 2.0. The media know this! If City are sensible they'll prioritise building a winning team, trying to find the next Bruno, over bringing in an over-aged player who certain won't be worth his wages in footballing terms. Fair enough, I just find it mind-boggling that it's even being suggested so early. Building a brand takes years and won't happen overnight, especially when you're dealing with a brand/product which has been woefully disappointing for years. Agree entirely. I've always maintained that in most sports the greatest form of marketing is winning and being succesfull, bring in good players and staff, win trophies and watch the people jump on board. Big names don't hurt, but not at the expense of the team being appropriately built.

You are missing my points... 1. Most of the Journalists dont get to choose what News Articles they write at a Commercial Newspaper... the content of the paper is largely dictated by what the Public want to read and find newsworthy. (And FWIW this is the reason The Herald still sells and The Age will go under in five years.) 2. More to the point the most over represented vocational course at Australian Universities is Journalism, the amount of journalism jobs available for these students when they graduate is miniscule. Therefore the Journalists at the Herald-Sun are either those with perfect Journalism Degrees possible marks wise or often those with perfect law degrees. So therefore if the King was at The Herald he would be writing the same articles he loathes... But we can pretty safely assume they would be written with a poorer standard of journalism.

That's a good comparison - we are $50 or 25% more expensive than AFL clubs. Given they all outnumber us in membership and attendance by a long way that really highlights how over priced our memberships are.
