Murfy1
Is this part of CFG's attempt at getting a bumper crowd in Round 2? Starve the supporters!! Yeah I'm increasingly starting to think this is precisely the case, that it's a deliberate policy to reduce the supply of matches in Melbourne to increase demand for matches that take place in Melbourne. Who knows, they might even be planning on marketing our Round 2 clash against Newcastle on October 19 at AAMI as 'Melbourne City FC's first ever match in Melbourne'. The funny thing is I think it would have actually have generated more interest and demand to see our first A-League season match if the club did the opposite, and played as many matches in Melbourne as possible. I understand and partially agree with the point that as long as our pre-season match fully prepares for the team to be as successful as possible next season, it doesn't matter where pre-season matches are played. But on the other hand I think this club is starting to take its several thousand old members/supporters for granted, thinking that new members are more valuable to the club than the 'rusted on' supporters who will pretty much stick by this club no matter what (as last season showed). And having pre-season matches in Melbourne (and especially in more accessible locations) would be a respectable way to pay these supporters back. Right now, the club is almost giving the impression that it cares more about the grass the team plays on than on giving something to supporters, with the surface being a main reason the team is playing in Ballarat and not Melbourne next week, and an FC Bendigo official even saying that the team is playing in Bendigo because "The reasoning behind playing it on the football oval is we can guarantee the quality of the surface... And the lights will meet match standard. They are the two keys for Melbourne City to play - the surface and the lighting, which we can guarantee for them" (http://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/story/2468271/melbourne-city-fc-coup-for-bendigo/?cs=81). I just think it's disappointing that the club is regularly turning down the chance to play in Melbourne, because I believe the club could have had the best of both worlds and could have played a respectable amount of matches in Melbourne and could have had a very good pre-season, like the club did in our 2011-12 pre-season. So as far as I can see, the club is disappointing supporters for no good reason, and it's an unimpressive thing to see from our new-look club.

Well for me playing surface is important as shit surfaces can lead to injuries and the club has suffered enough from this. Secondly pre-season games are for the die hards (I have been to a couple); and yes it would be a reward for those who have stuimped up cash, time and effort over the seasons but the club's priorities must be to get the squad fit for the season. Hell even the AFL doesn't get big crowds at their pre-season and they also get played all over the place.

We did play Valencia at home 2010. But go on moaning will ya.. Come on. Different context. Manchester City get a lot more home league games during a much longer season, plus they play in more competitions, plus their away games are far more accessible than ours are. There's just no comparison. Edited August 6, 2014 by jw1739

tigerou812
For some people once you get out of Melbourne you are in another state. I have been to some games in Melbourne and found that more people have turned up to the country matches. Some people won't even go from one side of Melbourne to the other because it takes to long. I'm just happy to have a game in Bendigo. It will be nice not to have to drive for hours to see them play for a change. At the end of the day I am just happy that they have preseason games to play where ever they are.

Murfy1
Credit to the club for finally having 1 game in Melbourne. I'll almost certainly be there and enjoy it, and I'm sure that'll be true of a great many other Melbourne based supporters as well. Although I can't help but wonder why the club just released details of this match only 12 days before it takes place, and late (for business hours) on a Thursday. It looks like the club released details of this match now to placate supporters after the Melbourne City merchandise announced earlier justly got the reception it deserved. And maybe this match was going to be behind closed doors, like when the team played against another NPLV opponent in Whittlesea Ranges at Epping Stadium back in mid-June (and BTW ticketing hasn't been confirmed for the Hume City game). And it's rather suggested in the announcement that these 5 games in Ballarat, Broadmeadows, Alice Springs , Bendigo and Lismore are all the remaining matches that the club will play in pre-season. So I'll happily attend the Hume City match. But still Melbourne City isn't doing a great job of representing Melbourne. tigerou812
I would have thought that where ever Melbourne play they are representing the club and Melbourne. Maybe we should ask the FFA for all our home and away games to be played in Melbourne for those who don't like to venture outside of Melbourne. Sorry but there are a lot of fans that live outside of Melbourne and preseason is a good way for these fans to see there club as they may not be able to travel down all the time. At most preseason games it's the hard core fans who turn up anyway. Most new people will come when the season starts. Games against A league teams may have been sorted out by the FFA who knows. We play in the summer and perhaps the Melbourne based clubs didn't want to play Heart while their season was still ongoing. I am just happy that we are having a good preseason and are going to be ready for the start of the season. Fingers crossed.

Heart_fan
Who cares where the games are in pre-season. The main concern is getting it right for the actual season for once . Having played 3 games in the UK, along with matches at Epping and Ballarat so far, we are just spreading the love in pre-season. We are also helping spread the game for some of our fellow HAL clubs in their chosen locations in up coming matches. n i k o
I'm not too concerned about games being outside Melbourne although I wouldn't complain if they were here. Long term it's important the game is being promoted to all parts of Australia, because if they don't the other codes will.

Falastur
Given the long pre-season.. Why is there such a long pre-season? Simply to give the players something to do? You can't seriously employ players full-time and then only ask them to actually work for seven months a year.
M13
So why not have a longer season?
NewConvert
So why not have a longer season? If the A-League starts earlier it runs into the finals of the AFL/NRL/RU seasons. If it finishes later it runs into the start of the season of the other codes as well. Then the issue of stadium availability rises its ugly head - when there is overlap the rugby codes really destroy the turf, and I don't believe that Australia has or can afford a football only stadium. Decades ago football went head to head with the other codes and lost badly. Against cricket and tennis dit can hold its own, specially if the Aussies are doing poorly. I think that longer term it will extend its season when the code is financially strong enough to be able to compete with the other codes.
Red or Dead
In three seasons when the A-League expands from 10 to 12 teams, each club will go from playing 27 rounds to 33 so the season will probably get extended then.

Heart_fan
The HAL will have to work very hard to try and extend the season, but the risks are clear around trying to compete too much in the main football codes seasons, especially their finals. There are issues from stadium availability, with chopped up surfaces also from rugby codes, through to a decline in attendences and TV audiences at this point when up against our rival codes. We have a long way to go before we have a solid enough base to really take them on. Expansion of the comp will be great, along with the FFA Cup now up and running, we have some positive steps being made, which we can hopefully maximise in coming years. Murfy1
Excellent to see Connor Chapman about at training again. There may be some new faces at training as well: The player on the right might be Philip Petreski (hopefully, as it would be pretty good to have a real LB in the team). And I'm less sure, but the player on the left could be Luke (or Luka) Prelevic. And it looks like there was another young keeper training with Redders and Velaphi, as well as Marko Stevanja, namely this guy: Good to see the club possibly strengthening our goalkeeping stocks, and maybe our defence as well.
