Pre-Season Friendlies

Still don't know why people are crying and wanking over this game. Brisbane basically have there full strength line-up on. And we're just rolling out 11 blokes who have had very little playing time together. Some people on here act like teenage girls ffs

Hey I resent that (I'm a a teenage girl).

Here is a positive. According to twitter HK showing great signs and played a full game

You know that things are actually pretty bad when it's positive news that someone "...showed great signs and played a full game."

My take on this is that a pre-season loss shouldn't be taken too seriously in isolation, but that the problem we have is that we can't take this in isolation. Once more we trot out lines about injuries, time the squad has had together, and so on and so forth, but the facts are that all the other clubs have to deal with these issues as well.

Once more we've shown that we're unable to beat an A-League opponent in a pre-season game, that we can't win on the road, can't come back from being a goal down, and can't even score a goal.

Conceding a goal in 16 seconds just illustrates that we were not mentally prepared for this game. And that's not good enough after two months of pre-season.

Our problem is becoming - if it has not already become - an embedded mental belief that we cannot win away from home. This is the mental mountain that we have to climb to play to our potential. Our squad is as good as or better than the others. The difference is that guys like Berisha and Smeltz believe that they can score - and so they do. Our guys believe that they can't and so they don't.

As Dylan said - FFS give us a sliver of hope.

Not an inspiring result. I'm not sure how much can be read into this though. Brisbane were full strength, and we had Hoffman and a second choice CB in defence...  Also, Engelaar was playing his first game, and he only played for 30 minutes. I think Ramsay will often start over Williams as well, who played around 70 minutes in this game, before being replaced by Ramsay. The opposite will likely happen during the season.

The main thing I'll take away from this game is the need for a quality striker. It appears that we didn't come close to scoring for most of the game, which is maybe not surprising since we played most of the game without an out-and-out striker, and Berisha got a hattrick. By the way, look at Berisha's goal scoring record before joining the A-League, its pretty abysmal. As Berisha shows, It's not like we'd need to sign a world class striker like Rooney to have a real goal threat. Hopefully this match adds further motivation to Heart to sign up a second striker.

Apparently Engelaar was down for a few minutes before being carried off. Word going around that it's a leg fracture and he could be out for months.

Fuck I hope this isn't the case.

Lets hope, here is a tweet from the club

Just to reiterate, Orlando Engelaar sustained a knock during today's loss to @brisbaneroar. Initial reports suggest a bruised shin.

Then this

However, Engelaar has gone to hospital for further scans. RT to wish Engelaar all the best. #HeartBelieve.

I'm probably more nervous for the results of that scan than he is.

Found this too from a courier mail journalist off twitter

  1. Bad news for Melb Heart. There are fears that Engelaar has fractured his leg.

  2. @marcothejourno What's the latest Marco? Heart's saying it's just bruising...

  3. @CaptainFantasy John Aloisi told me he thinks it's fractured.

The journalist, Marco Monteverde, who's saying Engeleaar fractured his leg is doubling down on his understanding of events:

Marco Monteverde The Courier Mail August 25 2013 4:55PM

ALBANIAN ace Besart Berisha has fired an ominous warning ahead of the A-League season, netting a hat-trick in Brisbane Roar's convincing 3-0 win over Melbourne Heart in Sunday's trial in Lismore.

Berisha scored his first just 16 seconds into the game before adding to his and the Roar's tally with two more goals after half-time in front of 5132 fans at Oakes Oval.

Returning  Roar star Matt McKay also an immediate impact, but the Heart’s marquee man Orlando Engelaar was a concerning casualty.

In his first game for the Roar in more than two years after re-signing with the club, Socceroos utility McKay was involved in the build-up to Brisbane’s first-minute goal.

Star striker Berisha finished off a move that included contributions from McKay, another of the Roar’s off-season signings, Irishman Liam Miller, and German star Thomas Broich.

Berisha doubled  the Roar’s lead in the 66th minute with a shot that snuck past former Brisbane goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne on the near post.

He then scored with a header in the 84th minute to add icing on an already sweet Roar cake.

While it was all good news for Brisbane, the Heart not only suffered the disappointment of losing but also a first-half scare when former Dutch international Engelaar  sustained what seemed to be a serious leg injury.

Desperate to regain possession in his own half, a lunging Engelaar came off second best as he crunched into Broich.

Both players stayed down, and while Broich was able to play on, the giant Engelaar needed two people to assist him back to the dressing-room.

The 34-year-old former PSV Eindhoven midfielder was left with a nasty lump on his shin, with Heart coach John Aloisi saying after the match that Engelaar had almost certainly sustained a break.

"We’re not 100 per cent sure yet but it looks like a fracture, which is terrible news," Aloisi said.

The Engelaar-Broich collision wasn’t the only occasion in a physical match when players were left sprawling on the turf.

Broich seemed to have a target on his back, with tempers briefly flaring in the second-half when players from both sides – including McKay and Heart star Harry Kewell – exchanging verbals.

Playing against A-League opposition for the first time since his 2011-12 season stint with Melbourne Victory, Kewell was keen to get on the ball as often as possible.

Wearing the captain’s armband, Kewell started behind a front three of David Williams, Golgol Mebrahtu and Mate Dugandzic.

Kewell almost set up a late consolation goal for the Heart with a clever back heel, but the strike from substitute Brent McGrath struck the post.

The Heart side also included former Roar midfielder Massimo Murdocca, who switched clubs in the off-season after eight years with Brisbane.

His article said that tempers flaired in the second half. I wonder if that was because what happend to Engelaar. Id love to see some footage to see who was at fault. Then send out PG next roar game to break Broice's leg

Nah, the injury happened in the 30th minute. A clash between Broich and Engelaar.

I ment like because it happend in the first half it got a little physical from then on in and if thats the case then it suggests it may have not been an accident

Ahh I get ya, It probably was to be honest. No doubt Berisha was involved, knowing his personality!

Apparently, Orlando is getting assessed as we speak, nothing to report as yet.

Yep, 3 minutes ago Scott Munn tweeted:

Orlando getting scans and being assessed. Nothing confirmed at this point.

It would be pretty stupid of Munn if he were to try and play down and effectively ignore an injury. Hopefully he's not that stupid.

Some more reports. It's unclear how up to date they are:

By Greg Danvers, AAP

August 25, 2013, 6:46 pm

Melbourne Heart may lose their new marquee signing Orlando Engelaar for an extended period after he suffered a suspected leg fracture in a pre-season friendly against A-League rivals Brisbane Roar.

Playing his first game for the Heart, the big Dutch international was involved in a heavy 28th minute collision with Brisbane's German star Thomas Broich as they contested the ball at Oakes Oval at Lismore on Sunday afternoon.

Holding midfielder Engelaar was taken to Lismore Base Hospital and was to have scans to assess the extent of the damage.

"It is a massive blow," said Heart coach John Aloisi.

"This was (to be) his first 45 minutes, he only joined us three days ago.

"It's not good at all because he's a great player and we're expecting a lot from him and for that to happen it is a big shame."

Roar striker Besart Berisha scored a treble, the first goal coming just 16 seconds after kick-off, to seal a 3-0 win in the match before 5132 fans.

Veteran Socceroos star Harry Kewell played the full 90 minutes for the Heart wearing the captain's armband and showed his touch and class.

"For him to play 90 minutes he'll benefit from it," Aloisi said of Kewell.

"We haven't decided yet on who we are going to get as captain."

Kewell was glad to get through the match well.

"I haven't played 90 minutes for some time so it was good to get the cobwebs out," Kewell said.

"We did all right today. This was our first big test, and thank God it was a friendly."

It may have been Kewell's first steps toward a Socceroos recall ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"Everyone here wants to be in that Australian squad and if everyone has a consistent season that makes (Socceroo coach) Holger's (Osieck) job that little bit easier," Kewell offered.

"We've got to play well and if something happens, something happens."

Roar coach Mike Mulvey said his team needed to improve despite their good win.

"I think we need to work on our cohesion and our ability to move the ball between the lines," Mulvey said.

"There were some good signs, good movement off the ball, speed of the ball could be a bit better."

Marco Monteverde 25 August 2013 6:51PM

MELBOURNE Heart's A-League ambitions have suffered a major blow, with new marquee signing Orlando Engelaar taken to hospital on Sunday with a suspected broken leg.

Dutchman Engelaar suffered the injury in  his first match for the club, a 3-0 trial loss to a Besart Berisha-inspired Brisbane Roar in Lismore.

Having lost the ball, the 34-year-old midfielder crunched into Brisbane star Thomas Broich in attempting to regain possession about half an hour into the contest.

Both players stayed down, but while Broich soon resumed, Engelaar was carried off, with Heart coach John Aloisi later fearing the worst despite club officials tweeting that the giant import had only sustained bruising.

"We’re not 100 per cent sure yet but it looks like a fracture, which is terrible news," a shattered Aloisi told News Corp Australia.

"It’s a shame because he just got off the plane. I thought I’d get him straight into it and play some football because we need to get used to the way he plays and he needs to get used to our style.

"For this to happen so early in the pre-season is hard to take."

The Heart’s Socceroos stalwart Harry Kewell agreed, but was hopeful Engelaar would not face a lengthy period on the sidelines.

"I hear on the grapevine it’s not great at the moment for Orlando," Kewell said.

"Hopefully it’ll be all good because he’s  going to be an important player for us."

Playing against A-League opposition for the first time since his 2011-12 season stint with Melbourne Victory, Kewell was keen to get on the ball as often as possible in front of 5132 fans at Oakes Oval.

But the match started disastrously for Kewell and his teammates with hat-trick hero Berisha scoring the first of his three goals just 16 seconds into the match.

The Albanian followed up with two more in the second half, while the closest the Heart came to scoring was a late strike that hit the post from substitute Brent McGrath.

"This was the first big kind of test for us," said Kewell, who was confident of improvement ahead of the start of the season in October.

"That’s why I’ve come out here three months before the season started, to get to know the boys and get to know how they play."

And perhaps also to give himself the best possible chance of forcing his way back into Socceroos’ selection contention for next year’s World Cup.

"Everyone here wants to be in that Australian squad," the veteran said.

Meanwhile, Berisha warned rivals that the Roar were ready to regain the A-League crown that "belongs to us".

"We are really hungry," the star striker said.

"I’m glad. It’s good to see the boys want it."
