dRoy
actually at one home game newspapers were burnt...I know cos I went to all of them... Wrong. That was the same game as the last time the free newspapers were handed out. IIRC. The flare under the drum made it look an smell like that. No one burnt papers. benzema23
and so this is a good thing we should emulate? Hmmm... and what do we want to copy next? The ultras that care more about their next choreography than what is happening on the pitch? Gigantic police contingent at derbies that separates the fans from when they step off the train? A fan ID card for everyone who wants to be in the home end for security reasons? Where are we going to stop in emulating the full european experience? Uh they distributed newspapers for more than half the season and didn't after the papers were burnt, or as you argued looked as if they were burnt but it was the flare under the drum....also that couldn't have been a flare...check the video further up to see what a flare would look like Edited October 7, 2012 by benzema23

benzema23
I mind flares atm because of the bad press it creates for our game. If we want more people to come we need to find a balance between our football atmosphere and looking like a safe environment for everyone... benzema23
they don't in reality! BUT they make non-football pple THINK it is unsafe and bad press just reinforces that. All I really care about is for the sport to grow to a level where the bad press, family appeal doesn't even matter anymore because simply so many people go to watch the A-League. Once we achieve that, by all means do whatever...make paper-hats out of the herald sun, etc...

Kiro Kompiro
Burning newspapers? Benzema23 please grow up and be a bit rational. I would suggest you come and stand with us next home game and take in the atmosphere. You are missing the point entirely. Instead of condemning these things you talk about "atmosphere". Well lets be upfront about this. Breaking seats does NOTHING for the atmosphere. Letting off flares does nothing for the "atmosphere". The active suppporters areasare a nice addition to the game day. I like them. But they're not essential. If seat vandalism, and flares keep happening in the active supporters areas, what do you think will happen to those areas? Vandalising the stadium seating is illegal damage to property and a safety issue. Setting off flares has been banned by the FFA in conjunction with the stadium owners and the security firms. Most importantly and more damaging is that both these things have the potential to paint the entire sport and the league in a negative way. Its not "just a few kids "losing their shit" in excitement". Some of the posts here give me the perception that there are a few too many immature shits in the active supporters group who simply have NFI of the wider implications of their actions. I don't know or care if they're Heart fans or Victory fans. They're not wanted or needed. Now go to bed without your supper...

Breaking seats does NOTHING for the atmosphere. Letting off flares does nothing for the "atmosphere". Your right breaking chairs does nothing for the atmosphere its mostly just because people dont like etihad, which is a shit football stadium, But can you elaborate on how flares provide no extra incentive for the fans, smoke is used in nearly every music concert, club, after teams win Grand Finals, AFL, NRL, NFl, controlled of course but still used as it creates a better atmosphere so why is it suddenly stereotyped so badly in "soccer" matches

I don't know or care if they're Heart fans or Victory fans. They're not wanted or needed. Now go to bed without your supper... Go watch tennis or horse racing, you boring sod. Really? Fuck knows why I didnt see that as it was right in front of me. I heard there might have been two flares after the first goal. One was ripped near me in bay 21 (the closest one to the South End), apparently there was one a few bays across towards the wing? Someone told me this but I think they were getting confused. That said, 6-10 cops + 4-5 ACG came into the bay where I was so you couldn't have missed them. I'm old enough- but not too old to have love football-to remember the days when the best we got was standing on concrete steps leaning up against a steel bar. No roof. Docklands is a palace in comparison. This sounds much better, tbh. why don't we see flares and broken seats in the EPL? Oh my, I really hope you are taking the piss. Yes flares are not common, but there is still several every season in the EPL (and more in lower leagues and more again outside of stadiums etc.) even though consequences are far greater (e.g jail time) 64 would be a small number of broken chairs at most grounds tbh. marteaux
Agree with Kiro tbh. He hasnt said anything wrong, only some things that are slightly misguided. Rest of you should probably shut up. However, Anyone who doesn't rate flares for the atmosphere they bring is either an idiot or just paranoid of the ALF media's potential to misrepresent the game in tomorrows rag. EDIT: agree with emu. Tony999
Don't get me wrong I love flares! They pop them in front of security personnel in the Eastern European countries but if it's illegal here (unfortunately) then so be it. But breaking chairs? I wonder if those little 15-16yr wannabe hools that got escorted by the police were crying outside the ground or in the police van begging for their mums to pick them up? Breaking chairs is silly IMO.

Peter
As the game has passed this thread will die off shortly. As the discussion has moved to terrace behaviour, I will say I liked the ticker tape effect of the ripped up papers (a.k.a. Argentina) and have been to a game in Egypt where papers were lit after each goal and would not like to see that here. I like the visual of flares but hate the smoke (asthma) and they are illegal. Chairs being ripped out is,well, ripping out chairs. First you have a chair and then you don't. Costs money to replace and makes you look like a turd. Then the chair is replaced. Yeah! Dopey. Prefer flags, ticker tape and streamers, lots of ticker tape (feels better on your head than beer) and streamers, red and white ones, covering the terrace and onto the field. Atmosphere, I want a party with atmosphere...
