Melbourne Heart boss John van 't Schip wants his players to go back to basics against Phoenix

March 13, 2014

JOHN van 't Schip wants his players to go back to basics after last weekend's reality check against Newcastle.

The Melbourne Heart coach admitted this morning he knew his team's golden run would come to an end at some stage. Now that it has, the old adage of 'you learn more from a loss than you do from a win' is ringing true.

Heart may have had 55 per cent of possession against the Jets and completed nearly 80 more passes, but van 't Schip wants his team to be smarter with the football when they take on Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park on Sunday.

"I think the lesson that we learned is that we need to go back to the basics and the basics is to play possession (football) with a lot of movement," van 't Schip said.

"We need to try to keep the ball longer. Those things were not optimal in the last game, because of the opponent and the circumstances, but we should every time try to work on that because if do then I'm sure our game will improve and as a consequence the results will be better."

After experiencing an unbeaten run of seven games, van 't Schip said the 1-0 loss to the Jets had naturally dampened the mood at the club.

But the coach isn't about to throw the baby out with the bath water.

It has been a relatively settled line-up that has delivered Heart its best run of form this season and van 't Schip sees no reason to change things too dramatically this week.

"It's normal after a loss that the disappointment is there," he said.

"If you look at the whole season it was a good run that we had until last Saturday. Now, OK, we have to start over again in preparing.

"We knew that the loss would come and we tried to avoid it of course, but it is like it is and maybe it's good to have that, maybe the pressure is a little bit less and the players can focus on Wellington.

"I don't think we're going to make that much change because the team is doing well.

"If you lose one time it doesn't mean that we have to changeover a lot of players. The confidence is there so it's also good to maybe have the same players and show them that (last week) was a game that was not the one that we wanted to have but we still know that they can have a good game on the weekend."

Harry Kewell is fit enough to feature in the starting line-up after coming off the bench in the two matches he has played since recovering from a toe injury, but van 't Schip would not say whether or not the captain will play 90 minutes this week.

He was not in the best 11 in a full ground training drill at Epping Stadium today.

That team was the same as the one that took on Newcastle with the exception of Orlando Engelaar, who was replaced by Stefan Mauk while the Dutchman sat out the session.

Unfortunately, two rugby games and wet weather Saturday have the pitch likely turned to absolute mince.

One game of rugby and one game of Rugby League.  (just get frustrated that people down here seem to think its the same game, even though they split over a century ago!)

On the weather front i thought Saturday was dry and Sunday was wet?  Needs to be for the pitch to cope.

Gives me the absolute shits that people down here don't know the difference or that the word "Rugby" refers to Union and not league.

Kewell seems pretty keen to get back into the team and play this weekend, tweeting earlier today: "Great training session today.. Feeling strong sharp and ready for the game on Sunday..".

IMO, JVS has shown some good man management skills both by consistently players certain players, and by not playing other players. For instance, Williams and Garuccio have looked sharp and effective coming off the bench, and JVS has done a good job of easing them into the team and slowly giving them more game time. And now Kewell seems pretty focused, and of course he came off the bench in the derby to great effect. I have a feeling that Kewell will be really switched on this Sunday.

A larger question is should the team be significantly changed after the Newcastle game or not. A largely settled team did achieve those 6 wins over 7 games, including that big win over Wellington, so there's a good argument for backing the previous starting XI. However, a few weaknesses were arguably exposed against Newcastle as well.

I'm pretty undecided on whether to keep the team unchanged or not. But the current starting XI did smash this Wellington side a few weeks ago, so I reckon JVS will probably go with an unchanged lineup for this Sunday's game.

IMO, if JVS is gonna continue to say theres "competition for places" in the side, then he should mean it and switch out players that aren't performing.

Not all 11 have deserved to keep their spot since Kewell was gunning it before he was injured (remember we did win 3 and a draw to Adelaide away before his toe injury) and the Gooch has been amazing off the bench and in the derby.

It's because people don't give a damn. There is nothing wrong with the first sentence apart from what it means for the pitch. Hope it's not too appalling. Who knows, maybe Mate will get another assist.

This is a must win for us if we are to have any chance in playing finals.. But more important than the result is to see once again which players can perform when the pressure is on and with the expectation to win. The same can be said about JVS, it's ok to come out in the media a put the responsibility back on the players, but he needs to show more as coach when the heat is on..

Against Newcastle he didnt back himself to handle the Engelaar man marking tactic so will see what he does on Sunday...

Apparently members can get 1 free GA ticket each this Sunday (limited to the first 1000).

Also, there's a ticket deal for Melbourne Tigers members "Melbourne Heart FC have a heart for Melbourne Tigers and are offering fans a *FREE Junior or Concession ticket when an adult Ticketek Australia ticket is purchased to this Sunday's battle with the Wellington Phoenix." (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=787422684620845)

Hernandez didn't train today and will reportedly not play this Sunday (http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/sport/phoenix/9828728/Hernandez-now-to-miss-Heart-game). The reports are probably on the money, but I'll believe it when I see it though.
