Would love an Atletico Madrid style kit. Red and white shirt with the blue shorts. Meeting half way and it looks great imo.

Red and white shirt with sky blue shorts? Would that look good?

no hahahaha. I;m not saying I want colour change, but red and sky blue can look good together if done right, but full sky blue shorts would look crap (would need to be a darker blue). You really need to break it down with another colour being between the red and sky blue. or done on subtle levels.

Google Atletico Madrid and they have a lighter shade of blue than Paraguay. Still not "City" sky blue.

FWIW my 2 cents is i'd like to keep the red and white stripes but a change to any colour (not necessarily sky blue) for an away kit would not only put to the back of the mind our woeful away record, but also give something that can be routinely changed ala pretty much every other club in the world (including the a league where teams have changed away strip 'designs' every few years).

No blue, or any other colour but Red and White in our home strip please. Non-negotiable.

From the man who wanted to change everything, a club cleanout from top to bottom...

I don't want to change the colours either, and I'll vote accordingly when the time comes - that is if any change is ever proposed.

But please be realistic - none of us is in a negotiating position, and never were under the old order. All that's changed so far is the name on the licence.

Look at all of you selling out to sky blue now. Where's the pride in the red and white stripes? Sure we've been woeful the last couple of seasons but the amount of people who are happy to roll over and allow sky blue into the kit is amazing.

Dont think were rolling over. I think people are just brainstorming potential ways the sky blue will be incorporated into our kits if it was to ever happen. However the poll speaks for itself doesnt it?

That was the people. Not the club. The people from top to bottom, not the club. Thought that was very easy to understand.

Be realistic? Is stating we want to remain Red and White not realistic? How is it not? As stated numerous times, these guys want to listen. As fans instead of totally selling yourself out, why don't you stand up for what you want?  That's what I will do.

Being realistic, change the name to Melbourne City FC, but keep the colours Red and White.

It's nothing personal. I just think "non-negotiable" is an inappropriate term.

Point made. Move on.

I still think everything is going to be great from here on in. Had coffee with a non-football mate today in lieu of golf - he couldn't stop talking about Heart's glamour future.

Red, white and blue?

Michael Lynch

January 29, 2014

Melbourne Victory has always touted itself as the Manchester United of the A-League, the club with the biggest fan base, biggest budget and best facilities. It has always prided itself on its domination of hitherto insignificant cross-city rival Melbourne Heart, regarding it as little more than an irritant.

How quickly things can change.

Victory was the biggest beast in the A-League jungle until last Thursday. Now it might not even be the biggest noise in its own backyard after Heart's takeover by moneybags Manchester City - the most surprising development in the A-League's nine-year history.

In fact, it's tempting to think that Victory's United parallel is becoming ever more accurate, considering the respective clubs' slide into the middle of the table after the appointment of new coaches.

Victory's humiliating 5-0 Australia Day loss to Sydney FC could not have come at a worse time and for those who believe in omens, is perhaps a stark warning of what might happen in the future.

Manchester City's ascendancy - it is in the running to win four domestic and European trophies - has coincided with United's relative Premier League decline this season.

Will Heart's inevitable rise, even though it will probably be known as Melbourne City by then, see the navy blues in retreat?

Certainly if City's owners can quickly invest in a new training facility and the sort of state-of-the-art infrastructure they are talking about, it will be much easier for the newly minted half of Melbourne to attract top players.

Wheelie bins full of ice as recovery aids outside a dressing room at La Trobe University were a running joke for the Heart staff and players, but that is how the club operated for a long time.

The wheelie bins, and a portacabin medical and massage room adjacent to the university pitches, were a poignant reminder of the financial gulf separating the two Melbourne teams. The disparity in facilities made it all but impossible for Heart to compete with Victory, firmly ensconced at AAMI Park.

The impact Heart's elevation from pauper to (relative) millionaire will have on Victory is just one of a number of issues thrown up by the investment of one of the world's richest clubs.

How will Heart's small but passionate fan base react to the new ownership?

Will the new paymasters stick with coach John van 't Schip and the club management, or wipe the slate clean? Will they try and cut costs and take advantage, for administration at least, of the Melbourne Storm facilities accessed through part-owner Bart Campbell, who has 20 per cent of the club?

Where will they choose to set up their training and club base? One of the biggest knocks on Heart is that it has lacked an identity. Building a training centre and a club headquarters, somewhere it can call home, will certainly help to give it that.

Already there have been several suggestions, ranging from upgrading their existing Epping location, doing a deal to take over Lakeside (home of Victorian athletics and South Melbourne) buying up the old Olympic Village grounds, or developing a greenfield site in Melbourne's outer eastern growth corridor?

But the biggest identity issue of all remains the club's name and colours. These are, for many, the heart and soul of any club: grounds may change and personnel come and go, but for supporters it's the shirt that counts.

Certainly Melbourne Heart's die-hards have made their feelings clear, arguing that whatever else might happen, its red and white colours should be non-negotiable. City fans want the team to go the whole hog and change its name to Melbourne City and play in the Manchester club's sky blue.

The name change should not be a big deal. City is an inclusive, geographically specific name and will give Heart an identity that its generic moniker lacks.

The colour is a trickier matter. There is a certain rebranding logic in City insisting on a colour change to light blue.

But one of the few distinctive things about Heart is its ownership of red and white stripes, and their retention would give fans some belief that at least part of the entity that it supports will continue in what will be a huge corporate rebranding.

The other point to consider is how Victorian supporters of other EPL teams would react if Heart was to switch to sky blue? When Carlton Soccer Club was established in the NSL it drew small crowds, despite its on-field success, as many AFL fans wouldn't barrack for a team linked to the navy blues.

If history is a guide, Manchester City should embrace the red and white stripes.

please fuck off Kappa

I am not sure they are even Kappa shirts. They seem like the exact same material as the Rebook ones just with a different design and different logos. My Roma tops are a very different material, lighter more breathable. If I were sceptical I would think that some company makes the shirts then they or the Heart sells the logo rights to which ever manufacturer wants to pay to put their name on them.

The Kappa material is shit. It feels like it is made from plastic bags or something and the collar chokes me when I wear it. The best material for any kit I have had would have been my old Umbro Swansea one. Beautiful material. Even the new Adidas one I bought is 10,000x better than Heart's current Kappa ones.

I think the colours are the least of their concerns right now. Any decent business man will know that their will be negotiations taking place during a take over. Their not going to be put off. If anything they will feel inspired by the passion they're seeing. Last thing they want is to inherit 7k fans that don't give a shit.

I was given a pair of billabong board shorts for Xmas that are made of recycled plastic bottles. It feels the exact same as the kappa jerseys.

We should keep the red and white stripes. There are not many clubs that have the centre stripe white, most are red (Bayern, Southampton etc. Sunderland have had the white stripe in the centre a few times since 1997, but apart from them it appears we are somewhat a little outside the box with our classic and stylish design.

Lynch is trying to create a storm in a teacup by speaking to a few unnamed 'Man City Supporters' in Australia who are 'demanding a colour change to light blue' (as if they run Man City) and then most likely scanning this forum to see that most comments here are in favour of retaining the colours. He then beats it up into a 'conflict'. Best to ignore it. Good to see that the coverage of our club is probably triple that of that other Victorian team since Thursday, a taste of things to come.

I don't get this 'man city' fans 'demand' we change. Man city have bought us for footballing reasons and they want to grow and have a development program etc etc. Not because they want an australian manchester for there fans to go on their holidays !!! Some go, I won't support them   !! Why do they think they need to ?? They have a team called Manchester City. We have a team called Melbourne Heart. We can scratch each others backs without having to give each other bj's !! Sounds like a load of shit stirring to me, reckon you are spot on, I've never followed a team in red and white and imagine the majority of Heart fans haven't ever followed one in blue and may never do so. Personally I'm proud to be associated with the City of Melbourne now and to have a A League team to follow. Man City always comes first but as so many Heart fans have a second team I don't see any difference. I'll be pleased with the name change to Melbourne City and will just get used to red and white.

Could someone please mock this up?? I took my son to the beach this morning and he wore his Heart shirt (he hasn't taken it off since Friday night) and sky blue shorts and it actually looked ok. I know sweet FA about fashion, but I would expect there are various shades of "sky blue" within a spectrum. I get the feeling that the darkest "acceptable" shade of sky blue with our shirt would be worth looking at. The socks to go with this?? Again defer to the more creative people in the forum but could someone have a crack at it??

We could keep our official colours as red and white, but wear shorts to indicate our benefactors in a similar vein to wearing a sponsors logo.
