You can all tell me to get fucked but I'm gonna put it out there:

Did anyone know red and white were the City Of Melbourne's colorrs before Man City bought us out?

And lets be frank, are people really that passionate about that anyway? Or is it some other`reason.

Like they.1. Are Danish 2. Support Olympiacos 3. Support Poland. Common thread: Red and White. Now not saying there's anything wrong with that but there is somethign wrong with that and claiming you won't except sky blue because Red and White means Melbourne.

or Crvena zvezda. (Red star Belgrade). I like Bali

It's in Indonesia

Obviously with 100 pages I wasn't going to read all of it (although I did read a fair bit), but I did not know that last year the club was being offered to anyone with a dollar in their pocket yet there was nothing official about it. And barring one or two exceptions, everyone wanted the club sold and  many removed from the club ASAP.

As a lifelong City fan I am obviously excited about all of this, but I do know there have been many comments concerning name and colour changes, centred around "this is not like Cardiff or Hull, the club is only 4 years old". However, this is your club, and I am merely a newcomer, but for the record, Melbourne City FC certainly has a nice ring to it.

Welcome BlueWolf.

I can't see how the age of the team is relevant. Unlike all Hull/Cardiff supporters, many of us are foundation STHs, we have helped establish the identity of the franchise in the ground, It may 'only' be 4 years but we have a connection with the franchise right from its beginning. The name is an issue for some here, the colours are an issue (to varying extent) for almost all.

Fair enough, but when you consider the thoughts I mentioned are coming from fans of clubs over 100 years old steeped in tradition and history, it's not difficult to understand their stance when they look at a 4 year old club.

That said, some have suggested that a compromise would be the red and black stripes that City initially brought in the 60s. I imagine City have already considered this. It'll be interesting to see if they listen to any Melbourne fan's thoughts or whether they'll just think "fuck it - we;ll do what we want, and the Australian FA will bend over backwards and allow us to do it, too". Not suggesting that would be right, but we'll see what happens in the off-season.

You must also consider it's not just about the club's age, it's about the rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, which as been around since before the Federation of Australia, it gives this argument about pride in the colours history. The colours of the City of Melbourne flag are Red and White, New South Wales' colours are sky blue. The team Sydney FC already play in a sky blue kit, and our cross town rivals play in dark blue and white.

I feel, a team called Melbourne City FC NOT playing in red and white would be missing out on something special.

Having said that, Sydney Swans play in red and white in AFL and St George in the NRL

So, essentially what you are saying is that it's all rather fucked up, and it really matters not a jot? Only beating Sydney to a pulp is considered to be paramount?

I is going no place, LR9.

I bring fun to the Hearts.

If that's the case, you're on the wrong foz, pal.

Here, let me help you out - www.hmfckickback.co.uk

They use the same forum software as us, so it should be a smooth transition for you...

You should go on tour with that routine, fella.

You do know I am on your side, yes, and want to learn as much as possible? Pity no-one wants to educate me properly.

I may have not have been clear as I could have. But the point I was trying to make, EVEN THOUGH there are teams in other codes with red and white representing NSW/Sydney, It would be a hugely wasted opportunity to not keep red and white for Melbourne Heart/City FC.

Aside from any skirting around FFP in Europe, I can see nothing but trouble coming from a sky blue home kit AND City FC renaming. Melbournians are not big City fans, there are probably more Crystal Palace or Bolton Wanderers fans, they'd hardly flock to see mini Man City regardless of quality.

Did anyone know red and white were the City Of Melbourne's colorrs before Man City bought us out?

Interesting question. Lived here 23 years, and my work has always been outside the city so I probably have not ever had much of a chance to see the flag flying anywhere. I have seen the flag only twice - the first time as a carving on a decorative wooden mantelpiece in a country property down near Warrnambool, the second time only as the tifo at AAMI Park!

The arms of the City of Melbourne are on the web-site but I have yet to find a direct reference to the flag on that site. The red cross on the coat of arms is actually the Cross of St. George of England...which might not be so popular after all...

As an unashamed Melbourne Flag lover even I have to admit that its depliction of Melbourne's Industries is very out of date. (I mean you wouldn't find many PPL in Melbourne in favour of Whaling would you?)

I believe a few years back it mooted that the Flag should be changed to more reflective of Modern Melbourne.

If we started chocolate brown I would still like to retain the ORIGINAL colours

i'm looking at your avatar and putting 2 and 2 together to get 5, but would have you supported a team in chocolate brown? Yes I was born there

I learned all about football there

Arrived here at 16 and missed my game dearly as cricket and AFL were not in my blood.

I went to see lots is NSL games and we all know how that panned out.

I was almost a euro snob simply for lack of choice here.

When A league kicked off I was very interested to jump aboard.

I tried to develop a relationship with MV even went to few games yet I disliked their style of football, arrogance, superiority complex and their captain!

I really tried....

As rumors started circulating about a new team in Melbourne I was ready to give it all.

Even before I knew what their name or colours will be.

Red and white was just an icing on the cake for me.

So yes if they were playing in brown or green I would be in love just as much

I think that it will be a complete new franchise. It has the advantage (and disadvantage) of replacing the team I supported but I'll feel no allegiance towards it at all. It'll have to win me over as it starts with zero goodwill. Luckily I'm spared the dilemma of whether I want to be a member of this new organisation as I only have the choice to become a STH. If it wants to win me over it'll have to provide instant success on the field and a lot more off the field in terms of facilities, match day experience and a contribution to Australian football. Even if this new entity wins the Premiership and Championship in its first season the success will come with a hollow core.

Lets wait and see it's not really your style to be doom and gloom bela. Either way be it heart or insert man city junior I'll be getting along to games and when I head overseas I'll be streaming them. I'm sure plenty of great supporters (who aren't all on this forum) will go along. It's ironic you call it a new club as many people on here were baying for the blood of everyone board included. Guess what.... You all got your wish. It seems like a case of wanting your cake and eating it too.

The most important thing about the Red and White is that they are simply the Melbourne Heart colours. They feel like Melbourne Heart.

Sure now that Man City have come in and have spoken about clubs' reflecting their cities, other connections between Red and White and Melbourne are also important (and the connection sky blue have with another state and city are also noteworthy). But at the end of the day Red and White simply are the Melbourne Heart colours. End. Of.

The colours that the big city clubs have now are pretty much perfect. There's 2 clubs in Sydney, one is sky blue and one is red and black, and 2 clubs in Melbourne, one is navy blue and one is Red and White. It's all ideal right now.

Football clubs are ideally run by the many for the many. But with so much money in football nowadays things are compromised, and clubs are run by the few, but at least clubs are still often run for the many (even if club owners routinely misunderstand the demands and desires of the many, that is the supporters). But this club threatens to be run by the few for the few, with their decisions appealing only to the corporate interests of the few who run Man City. I think a colour change would be big problem for the club and a tragedy, but the colour change would symbolise this bigger problem, namely that the club will so clearly be run by the few for the few. I can foresee a massive gulf between supporters and the club, with supporters having no sense of ownership of the club (not even the emotional ownership A-League supporters feel now for their clubs: feeling apart of their clubs), hence I think there will be large and noticeable absence of passion for this club. Who will sing for the club? Who will spend their hard-earned to travel and support it? Who will go to the airport or a training session just to get a glimpse of the players? Who will think an talk about this club constantly? I fear that the very worst of modern football could come to the fore with this club.

Of course there is much uncertainty about the future of this club, and the information vacuum isn't helping. Hopefully we'll learn more next week, and hopefully wholesale changes aren't set in stone.

I found out that they were the City of Melbourne colours when Heart adopted them. I've become very attached to them since then

There are things that we all wanted to change and they will change - nobody is calling for the wheelie bins and poverty funding to be retained. What we all wanted though was the Cinderella fairytale, success as Melbourne Heart after she was wooed by her Prince Charming. The appeal in the fairytale is that the Prince sees her as she is without the preconceptions of her kitchen drudgery, its identity affirming. If the story ended explicitly with her changing her mane and identity when she married Prince Charming I doubt that the story would have endured.

Thanks, Jun, and yeah I get it. The red and white is Melbourne.

At no point did I suggest here that the colours should be changed neither did I suggest that the name should be changed (although for the record I think they will, as Jovan said in post #3054). Consider me asking as a temperature gauge, if you will. Apparently it's boiling hot.

Will they remove the majority of the board during the off-season?

This is exactly how I felt. I told my mate who I went to victory games with that as soon as a new Melbourne club came into the league I would be jumping on board. There was no discussion, no fight, he knew why. In fact I'm sure he would have liked to have jumped onboard too, but he was a victory member with guys from his work. He said it was too late for him. He was too far gone. So sad...

I hope that they remove the majority of the Board if the colours change, the Board is made up of members of the consortium of CFG and Melbourne Storm who bought the franchise.

We don't know the names of the Board members. All we know is that Bart Campbell is (or was at the time of the takeover) the Chairman.

What will be interesting is whether there will be any change in the management at Melbourne Heart - I am not aware of anything so far, but.... The club seems to be in complete PR/media lock-down at the moment.

Pretty much the entire club is in Manchester right now so once the A-League season is over I think you'll find there will be announcements. Big player signings are still a way off but other announcements will be made.

  • Hi dave, yet another question about the man city/heart take over.
rumors going around that kit designs are being finalised.
Do you think they may have a few different ones and put it to a vote? and thats how this whole colour thing will be done? cheers Oh and my bold GF statement.
Next season changing of the guard, I bet the two grandfinalists this year will slide down the table out of the 6

Considering there's a 2-3 month turnaround from designing kits to them hitting shelves that would make sense.Steve that's a bold statement, I think you're wrong. But lets touch base in 365 days.

Pretty simple equation once the outcome is revealed.

Red and white = a club for the fans

Sky blue = a club for themselves

I know that's bloody obvious but when it's simplified, you can immediately determine what sort of club culture we're going to have straight from the get go.

Nate if they change the colours and name without any consultation with the Heart fans, then I will never trust the City board again.

I will always support City, but they will have gone down in my estimation big time.

I have said all along that they are not that kind of management. So I am still hopefull your colours will remain.

I get the feeling that even if the cfg bend over backwards to involve fans in the changes and give us great sth packages amongst other things to make previous and potential fans to feel more 'included'. But say we want the colours to be sky blue and white, a few will still accuse it of being not inclusive nor consultative...

Its negotiating to a compromise. Being consultative doesnt mean that one side gets everything they want. I think its perfectly legitimate for them to argue look we will be more inclusive to fans, to make them feel more involved. Such as having more say about how the club is run or include other elements of 'Melbourne' to make it a 'Melbourne' club. But then say to create this synergy between the three clubs we would like the home colours to be sky blue.
