Please help us if JVS gets sacked - DO NOT hire Miron Bleiberg!

Extract from Arthur Papas:

“I walked into a room that I’ve never encountered because my last season at Oakleigh was something where there was an amazing change-room and an amazing dynamic.

“We still had very good periods in the season because we prioritized and, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if we finished 10th, 11th or 9th, everyone else is on holiday today and we were still playing.”

Foschini shared a similar view to Papas, claiming it was the worst change-room environment he has ever experienced in his playing career when he first joined the club.

“We came here to a change room that I’ve never seen before, it was a disgrace,” Foschini said.

“We tried to change it around and salvage what we can and at the end of the day we’ve made it to the last eight in the country and the last three NPL teams in the country.

That's a poor attendance at Hume. FFA is going to have to rethink some aspects of this competition. Tuesday evenings in a chilly Melbourne Winter/Spring are never going to work.

I actually think that is a pretty accurate attendance and I doubt they would have expected many more...

Hume City obviously have been a very successful club in the past ten or so years and over that period the VPL side who has consistently probably played the most pleasing football to watch but they have always had a really small supporter base compared to other VPL clubs.

The club has based its rise over the past two decades on a stable and generous board, and benefited even more greatly from the well known generosity (To many worthy causes) of the late John Ilan (Crazy John's) who both assisted the club financially and with his own time to help get the club's great facilities of the ground when dealing with the Hume City Council.

You would also not expect many Oakleigh fans to travel an hour across town to attend the match, Oakleigh of course have also been one of the State's bigger clubs over the years (But barring a few Oakleigh Diehards) like Northcote most of their supporters generally were/are Old Hellas fans who live in the area and so they get a lot more fans at Home Games than when they play Away.

Yeh that's true, not to mention it was pissing down in Broadmeadows, so that would've put a few people off too. Their previous 2 games (against Olympic and the friendly against Victory) had a much better turnout, so the weather and victory playing the same night would've been the main factors.

Was a great match though, had just about everything. I think Oakleigh really shot themselves in the foot when they decided to flood the defence having gone a goal up, despite having a fair bit of the play at the time.

Let's hope the weather is a little better on Tuesday, can't wait

Unfortunately my stream wouldn't work and thus i couldn't watch this game.  Sounds like I missed a cracker.

I find your comment very interesting though.  Many years of watching and playing sport has shown me that when you concentrate exclusively on defence, all you seem to do is to invite the opposition to attack.  Next thing you know you are under the hammer, praying for the full time whistle.

Yeh I've never really understood it either, but in all honesty we probably just criticise it only when it occurs. More often than not, tightening the defence is probably the way to go and would work if the shape/structure is maintained. But that's the thing with lower tier sides, they aren't always capable of such discipline. Had Oakleigh maintained their game-plan, sure they may have conceded still, but at the same time they could've just as easily scored a sealer.

There's nothing worse than watching your side try and defend a slim lead by flooding the defence. I've seen it plenty of times with my EPL side and given the nerves it brings on, I'd probably rather just find out the final score than sit through those last few minutes.

I think there is a difference between "being more defensive minded" and "focusing exclusively on defence".  Being more defensively minded is your players taking more conservative options, like fullbacks not bombing forward (or rarely) and being more focused on maintaining possession rather than looking for killer passes. When a team just looks to defend, the problem is that they can't hold possession in the other teams half (for starters they have nobody in that half).  If you can't do that then all that can happen is that your opponents have possession in your half.  When you have that situation, you have trouble.

The problem is  the difference between the two options can be a fine line and the less skilled and less experienced players are the more difficult they will find their task, which I guess is what you are getting at.  In end the old adage always makes sense "attack is the best defence".

Looks like Hume are going to play at AAMI after all. Will be a win for fans & playing at a neutral venue has got to be better than playing in your opponents home ground.

apparently the ground hire is 90k.

im sure they'll make money, but it's easy to imagine that Heidelberg made more especially as Heidelberg would have got the food and drink income.

as to them bringing in a massive name of yesteryear, that should get the turnstiles ticking too, but I don't expect it will help on the field, in fact might do more harm than good.

lucky cunts get everything handed to em, toughest game was adelaide at home, rest of the games v state teams
going to be handed another home game ffs :droy:

The highlights of the half indicated that their man Benny Williams was looking after them very nicely. (a pen for nothing and a stone waller not awarded at the other end).  The only way a minnow can win is with momentum, you strip that away and they are toast.

Interesting that their Round 5 away match against Perth has been re-scheduled to 16th December, just three days before we meet them in the Christmas Derby.

But getting back to the FFA Cup, I don't think there will be huge interest in this competition until there is a proper random draw for each of the rounds starting at the Round of 32 and including the actual Final.

Qualifying results up:

http://results.theffacup.com.au/comp_info.cgi?a=ROUND&compID=394529&c=0-10664-0-0-0

big winners Dandenong Warriors.  Still next match will start at 0-0, so we'll see if that helps them.

My local lads Eltham are playing Monash Uni next week. (listed as home club but not actually at home, presumably due to something called "the cricket season").

I see a few results last week were listed as "forfeit", as are the venues for a couple of games next week.  For some state league clubs in pre-season I can imagine getting a competitive squad registered and ready to go this early can be a challenge, particularly if you have a non-cooperative council that won't give you grounds access.

Now down to 34 teams in Victoria (should be 32 but 1 game doesn't have a result and another is being played tonight.).

Anyone still in it?

My boys drew Melbourne Knights away last week, but turned up full of hope intent on playing football (apparently).  Yep and that turned out just how you'd expect.  Knights 7- Redbacks 0.  back to reality boys.

In other news the real Melbourne City's dream is also over after a 1-4 loss to Dandenong City

Teams left:

Hume, Port Melbourne, Knights, Oakleigh, Bentleigh, Avondale, South Melbourne, Richmond, Sunshine George cross, Clifton Hill, Doveton

Pascoe Vale, Knox, Mooroolbark, Green Gully, St Albans, Langwarrin, Dandenong City, Endeavour hills, Western Suburbs or Kingston, Murray United

Geelong, Caulfield United, North geelong, South Springvale, Altona, Heidelberg United, Bulleen, Dandenong Thunder, Goulburn, Yarraville,

Springvale White Eagles or Malvern City.

sole Cinderella candidate left: State League 4 side Endeavour Hills Fire

So a crazy night last night in the FFV qualifiers.

South Melbourne played Altona Magic away- first time the teams had met since they were both in VPL (altona now state 1 didn't get an NPL licence).

65 mins in, south win a penalty and the lights go out... cue absolute chaos, flares ripped, thrown on pitch, fans injured and burned by flares. Apparently Preston Macedonia fans rocked up and started the trouble with SMFC supporters. Crazy night with Police and ambulances called.

FWIW south went on to win 3-0 with altona finishing with 10 men.

I was there. It was not madness. One flare got ripped and thrown at the south supporters who had gradually gotten closer to the makedonia fans. The flare hit a girl in the side of the head and that was it. Security and cops split it all up and nothing more happened.

On the game, magic should have been 2-0 at half time. Played fantastic just didn't finish. South's speed and fitness and overall class won them the game.

Penalty. Player went straight into him and made contact. Didn't even get close to the ball.

Draw revamped for 2016 Westfield FFA Cup

Take a look back at all of the colour, goals and celebration as Melbourne Victory prevailed in the Westfield FFA Cup Final.

Thursday, 12 May 2016 -
A change to the draw principles for the Westfield FFA Cup 2016 will make the Round of 32 even more unpredictable for the 10 Hyundai A-League clubs, Football Federation Australia (FFA) has announced today.

This year, all of the Hyundai A-League clubs will be placed into one pot, meaning any one of the 10 professional clubs could be pitched into a knock-out tie in the suburbs against a semi-pro Member Federation club.

In previous years, the four Hyundai A-League Semi Finalists were placed into a separate pot, which guaranteed them a tie against a Member Federation club in the Round of 32, with the other six A-League clubs drawn against each other.

FOX SPORTS has again committed to provide comprehensive coverage from the Round of 32 onwards for Australian football’s national knockout competition in 2016, which began with a record 691 Member Federation clubs competing in the Preliminary Rounds of the competition.

The match schedule for the Westfield FFA Cup 2016 Final Rounds, which is when the ten Hyundai A-League clubs join the fold, remains predominantly similar to last year.

The Westfield FFA Cup 2016 Round of 32 is set to commence on 26/27 July and, similarly to last year, will comprise of four (4) match days (four matches per night on either a Tuesday or Wednesday night) over a three week period, while the Round of 16, Quarter Finals and Semi Finals will each be played over the space of a fortnight.

The Westfield FFA Cup Final 2016 will be played on Tuesday 29 November to determine the third winners of the competition after Adelaide United claimed the trophy in the inaugural year before Melbourne Victory won it in 2015.

The more open and intriguing Round of 32 draw will again feature three (3) all Hyundai A-League Club matches, nine (9) all Member Federation club matches, and four (4) Member Federation club v Hyundai A-League club matches.

As the Westfield FFA Cup prepares to again take centre stage on the national football calendar, FFA CEO David Gallop said another captivating year of the competition lay ahead.

“With the addition of the Hyundai A-League clubs, a total of 701 clubs will have taken part in this year’s Westfield FFA Cup, which continues to go from strength to strength and capture the imagination of football fans around the country in just its third year,” said Gallop.

“The competition’s unique selling point is the appeal of watching grassroots clubs playing at suburban grounds against the pros from the Hyundai A-League.”

Similarly to last year, FOX SPORTS will show 11 matches LIVE (one match per match night) while providing coverage and updates, as well as LIVE streaming, of all non-broadcast matches.

Details regarding the FOX SPORTS broadcast and streaming will be announced closer to the start of the Round of 32.

Gallop commended Fox Sports’ continued support of the Westfield FFA Cup.

“Fox Sports have done a fantastic job in their coverage of the Westfield FFA Cup in the first two years and it’s fantastic that they have again committed to extensive coverage in order to bring the magic of the cup to people wherever they are around Australia,” said Gallop.

“Following the success of the first two years of the competition, Member Federation clubs are realising the significant benefits that come with making a run deep into the competition as Hume City found out in reaching the Westfield FFA Cup Semi Finals last year, so these clubs will be as determined as ever to go and put their name up in lights.”

On the announcement of the schedule and details for the Westfield FFA Cup 2016 Final Rounds, John Batistich, Director Marketing, Scentre Group National Marketing, reinforced Westfield’s delight in being the competition’s naming rights partner.

“We are extremely proud to once again be the Major Partner of the Westfield FFA Cup,” said Batistich.

“Just like the local clubs that participate in this competition, our Westfield Shopping Centres are very much part of their communities and we look forward to showing our continued support to all the teams taking part in the Cup’s third season.”

Slot allocations for the Westfield FFA Cup 2016 Round of 32 remain the same as last year with Football NSW receiving five (5) slots, Football Queensland and Football Federation Victoria four (4), Northern NSW Football and Football West two (2), and Football Federation South Australia, Football Federation Tasmania, Capital Football (ACT) and Football Federation Northern Territory each getting one slot.

The remaining Member Federation slot is filled by Blacktown City FC, who received automatic entry into the Round of 32 after being crowned PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Champions of Australia last year.

Each State/Territory will know their final Member Federation entrants in the Round of 32 on the following dates:

18 May – Football NSW
6 June – Football West
11 June – Football Queensland
13 June – Football Federation Tasmania
15 June – Football Federation Victoria
18 June – Capital Football (ACT)
18 June – Football Federation Northern Territory
19 June – Northern NSW Football
25 June – Football Federation South Australia

* Dates are subject to change

The draw for the Round of 32 will be conducted in the last week of June with details to be announced closer to the date.

Features of the Westfield FFA Cup 2016 Final Rounds

Match Schedule

  • The Round of 32 draw will see all ten (10) Hyundai A-League clubs placed into the same pot, unlike previously which saw the four (4) Hyundai A-League Semi Finalists drawn out of a separate pot and guaranteed to face a Member Federation club in the Round of 32.
  • The match schedule remains predominantly similar to last year, with the Round of 32 to be held over three weeks, the Quarter Finals played prior to the start of the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 Season, and the Semi Finals completed by the end of October.
  • The draw principles that will see at least one Member Federation club reach the Semi Finals will remain unchanged.
  • Member Federation clubs will always host matches against a Hyundai A-League opponent.
  • The match schedule provides Hyundai A-League clubs with more competitive pre-season matches and gives Member Federation clubs the opportunity to field stronger line-ups.
  • The Westfield FFA Cup Final 2016 is scheduled for Tuesday 29 November 2016.

FOX SPORTS Coverage

  • The FOX SPORTS broadcast schedule will consist of 11 LIVE full broadcast matches and coverage of all other 20 matches from the Round of 32.
  • Round of 32 will feature 16 matches across four match days. FOX SPORTS is committed to broadcasting four of the matches LIVE with cameras at the other 12 matches.
  • Round of 16 will feature eight matches across two match days – two LIVE full broadcast with cameras at the six other matches.
  • Quarter Finals will feature four matches across two match days – two LIVE full broadcast with cameras at the other two matches.
  • Semi Finals will feature two matches across two days, both broadcast LIVE.
  • The Westfield FFA Cup Final 2016 will be broadcast LIVE.

A step in the right direction, but the competition wont be taken seriously until a lower side doesn't automatically make the semi-final.

Yep. Once it gets to the final 32 make it fair game for everyone. That way if a team does get to the semi's it will actually be a great accomplishment.
