marteaux
The UK definitely come up with great TV ideas, but the US make them better. Examples of quality shows ruined by yank remakes. Skins The Office Not the nine o'clock news Top Gear The Inbetweeners All abhorrent attempts at placating the US market by pandering to their limited scope for: A) Understanding foreign accents B ) Understanding and appreciating understated/black humour C) Willingness to learn about cultures other than their own You are well off the mark here Beard-a-tron. The Office(US) was good, and its more successful that The Office(UK) Everyone has tried to remake Top Gear and failed, the chemistry between the those 3 cannot be copied. If you want to look at reality TV then I think American Idol far outdid Pop Idol Whose Line is it Anyway, was much funnier with Drew Carey as the host. I guess it just depends on the premise, some things cant be translated across cultures some can, when it does I believe the yanks do it better. Mate you are trying to fight an argument that you simply cannot win. US ruins UK's best shows, thats that.
Footballism
UK Shameless is better than the US one too. I actually can't think of any US remakes of UK shows I have actually liked, let alone thought they were better than the original.
Tesla
US version of the office is good, every other remake is shit.

This is nonsense, as if you actually know any yanks that dont understand foreign accents, black humour and arent willing to learn about other cultures, thats just as bad a stereotype as saying all Aussies cook shrimp on the barby and speak like Paul Hogan. All the shows you have mentioned are popular in the US, due to that popularity, they tried to make their own version, eg, Top Gear: The UK version clearly didnt do that many US cars, so the yanks want to copy it to appeal to a much larger TV audience. If what I wrote wasn't indeed true why do US production companies feel the need to 'improve' on these successful UK shows?
bazzatron
The market in the US is 5x the size of the UK, they have already made money off the UK version of the show, why not re-write it to suit the local market and make more. Sometimes they nail it and do make it better. Most likely due to a bigger budget and high quality post production.
bazzatron
Same reason why old movies are remade. Take a classic story, rework it for modern audience with added benefit of cutting edge special effects, movie becomes a blockbuster once again to an entirely new audience.
