Forgive me if I'm wrong, but if we sell Babalj and Good for, let's say $900,000 in total, we don't then get $900,000 extra to buy players in our cap. The cap stays the same $2.5 mil or whatever it is, correct? Good and Babalj would not be earning very much at all ATM. Perhaps $75,000 a year?

My point is, if Heart are against buying players outside the cap, we have very little hope of recruiting anyone of any real skill to cover these 2 positions. Which striker and cb could we get for $75 a piece?

exactly right. Even if JD says he can find a players like that again, firstly it's not as easy as he says, and secondly it will take a good 1-2 seasons before they settle in and start putting in good performances. We are at a crucial stage in Babalj's career at the moment where he can really take it to the next level next season and bang home the goals week in week out.

I read yesterday that the Serbian league is ranked 28th In Europe, and there really are only two significant clubs in it - Red Star and Partisan.

Amini and Langerak have got themselves gigs with the top club in the Bundesliga, way above the Serbian league.

So in Babalj's case it's questionable as to whether he would be making the right move. Warm the bench in Serbia, or develop his skills and reputation with another season in the A-League?

Actually not an easy call for him, and it's really up to him in the end.

+1

Like i said, if the club is totally focused on developing young australian players and doing what is best for them instead of worrying about a transfer fee that really isn't that high, then maybe it isn't the best move for Babalj to head to a league that is ranked 28th in europe. No doubt he would be going to Serbia with the hope of moving to either the Bundesliga, La Liga, EPL or Serie A. It would be easier for him to play another season in the a-league, his goal should be to win the golden boot, and then you'll see a mid-table team in one these leagues pick him up. We've seen he gets better with gametime, and in Serbia his chances will only be from coming off the bench everynow and then, which doesn't give teams in the big leagues to properly have a look at his ability.

Red Star gets average attendances of about 13k. The next biggest Partizan averages 7 k. Hardly massive league to go to. I think a 20 goal season in the A-League will result in some big Euro clubs knocking on Eli's door. Eli would know this But since this means that the club gets zilch, and the pattern in the A-League for next season is live within your means ie cut spending I actually think the 50% chance of him going is coming from pressure from the club who wants the money.

The Serbian league isn't a big one, but he'll be under the noses of coaches and scouts from Europe's biggest clubs. He might also like the opportunity to play in his family's homeland. It reminds me of Viduka going to Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Celtic and then Leeds. The difference is that Viduka delayed moving for a year or two to win a championship with the Knights. I'd love to see that happen, but I doubt that Babalj would have the same commitment to us that Viduka did for the Knights.

The other important parallel is that I'm pretty sure the Knights made their money from his subsequent transfer, not the first transfer to Zagreb. I agree that the club is probably happy to do the deal. It could turn out to be the gift that keeps on giving.

Red Star's average attendance is closer to 17k, playing in a 50k+ stadium each week and Babalj would be competing for titles in Serbia. He will obviously move on from there but Red Star would be a great stepping stone into a better league. It would mean better pay, he is already accustomed to the language and culture etc.. It is the perfect move for him.

One thing that sometimes happens when people go back to the "old country" is that they're not accepted by the locals as one of their own. Will he get a fair go? And as the foreigner, the level of forgiveness is diminished. We do it to the foreigners in the A-league. From what I remember reading about Viduka's time in Croatia, he was glad to leave in the end. Will he get a fair go?

Glad to leave?

Maybe he could have rocked up at Celtic on time then and not sulked the whole time he was there as well...

Dont get me wrong I am actually a big Viduka fan, but the guy is famous for being a temperamental player - Only really Knights and Borough fans had him as a firm fan favourite.

Where are they pulling that statistic from and is that current?

Glad I didn't make it to the forum after getting around to reading this fred. Learnt a while a ago we're treated like fools and one would be quite naive to believe anymore than about 5% that comes from H.Q. Would've taken the mic hostage and not shut up so be thankful those that made it;)

Dead set cracker this 2000 extra members equals break even on the books for the year after roughly dropping 2.5mil seaso 11/12. On further inspection though JA is on work for the dole wages saving say 500k, + 2k members adds roughly another 500k, stay under the wage budget which im sure we will do saves another 500k and there's 1.5million. Must have a threadbare staff roster allready with the lack of everything so unsure of cuts there but where's the other 1million that's needed and the added possible 250-500k shortfall if membership is stagnant going to come from?

*trouble with edit.

I can only guess expenses this year will be much the same or possible more with the aami park deal expiring. Have we negotiated a similer deal as rent will be atrocious with the sweetner over. Ffs sake Scott...2k members. Not sure if he thinks we're retarded or its himself and the accountants that are!

The exact details have never been released I believe, but the owners meeting that occurred around the same time as Tinkler coming back to the Jets, concluded with the teams getting a larger slice of the money FFA get from A League generated revenue.

I remember a release from someone at MHFC mentioning that with the outcome from the meeting and increasing membership would have us breaking even in the upcoming season.

Again, no real details, but look at a cheaper manager, some big earners gone, an increase in membership and increased revenue from FFA, it's believable we could now be breaking even.
