Every time I see footage from parliament I cant help but laugh, the other party of whoever is speaking always have these retarded grins on their face, while those from the same party nod their head and yell 'here here', and then every so often those from the other party break out into http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpgDtoj73DQ

Tax free threshold increased to $18k. Is this real life?

Only particularly strong policy I found in the whole budget was letting small business offset current losses against previous profits, rather than future profits. Makes sense.

Yeah, but if the tax free threshold was indexed as it should, it would be higher than that anyway, we have been getting rorted for years. Also, windfall made up with carbon tax.

Left wing, socialist, right wing beliefs right here.

Power to the people, corporations , government.

Can one of the economists here explain to me why the government thinks its a good idea to students/unemployed/single mothers etc, an extra $212pa?

Its only an extra $4 a week, couldnt it be better spent elsewhere?

Economically this is done to bring the most minimal increase in the distribution of income (Pretty much it means there is less of a gap between rich and poor, but this is pathetic really)

The major reason it is done is politics. Giving these people a tiny increase in their income could help sway votes towards the Labor Party.

This is pretty much a keep the people happy policy

Very unexpected reply. Arent you left wingers the ones that support foreign aid?

Now that I'm sober.

I don't believe Australia should give more ODA, it's been scaled back for a reason. I've always been a fan of the quote, 'charity begins at home'. I know people might see that is simple-minded and/or ignorant, but honestly I would much prefer to give money to family and friends who need support (as I can at least see where my money is going), compared to handing out money as charity, over which I have no control. The current ODA is more than sufficient I reckon.

More importantly though 70% or so of our ODA goes to the Asia-Pacfific region and rightly so, as nations should concentrate ODA's upon their own regions. We are on the dawn of the Asian Century and supporting our region is something I am in support of, and now that the region is booming and most Asian economies are flourishing, why should we increase the ODA and leave our budget out of shape?

Eventually we should aim for .5% but not for us at the current moment in time, our fiscal health is far more important for us at this stage.

Dont see why you should be mad. You should be grateful that up till now money was taken from hard working individuals and used to pay for your tafe course.

No he should EXPECT that. No citezens' right to a standard level of higher education should be curtailed by economic disadvantage.

Please tell me you completed your undergrad on a Full-FEE paying place and paid up front and in full.

I assumed TAFE is also done through HECS debt? And is also still subsidised, just less?

And fwiw, I never asked or wanted my uni to be subsidised, its just how the system is and of course I am going to take advantage of it (dont think they even have full-fee places for domestic students anymore, they got rid of it before I started uni AFAIK). Though the interest fee loans are a good policy.

im not gonna lie, i honestly have no real understanding of how this shit actually works thats why i said it had never previously fazed me.

all i know is the bare minimum facts that my teacher told me today.

and as a kid coming out of school at the end of the year, working once a week earning little over $100 a fortnight and having a single parent as a mum I honestly cant see me continuning on with the course next year.

Means the last 2 years have been a complete and utter fucking waste of time.

not sure what im gonna do tbh.

I bet you the amount I'm taxed wont decrease!

I've been in full-time work for 6years now and since the Howard government introduced HECS indexation in 2006, my mandatory HECS payment would barely scrape the surface. I think it started at about $17,000 and I think its only down to $13,000. Not sure what my most recent HECS Statement was tbh.

I dont think you read his post properly tbh. I think what he was saying was that his original principal debt was $17,000. He has been working for 6years full time and after those 6years has only managed to decrease the debt to the level of $13,000.

He was also stating that since the indexation of the HECS scheme in 06, if he were only paying the minimum repayment each month it would barley aid in his quest to erase the debt in a suitable time period.

Baz?

Correct.

My "interest free loan" so to speak, isnt exactly interest free. Political cuntery!

You guys are surely trying to troll me.

No way you guys are serious.

You arent comparing like for like.

The $17k from 6 years ago is equivalent to over $20k in todays money, so its not a decrease from $17k to 13k, its a decrease from about 20k to 13k.

Just a clarification here. TAFE's are funded by state governments so it has nothing to do with Gillard. Your beef is with Ballieu and his Liberal Government.

I work in the sector and have been astonished at how horrific the funding cut has been so I completely agree with your outrage. Feel free to join us in future action - there will be plenty.

I think I might owe more than that actually. The point is, before I started earning enough to have to pay my HECS back, the amount owing was never changing, but as soon as I started working the amount owing increases each year. Its fucking gay.

The amount indexes once the debt is over 11 months old so it would definitely have been indexing regardless of whether you were earning enough to pay. BTW the indexing was happening prior to 2005 as well.
