First game Garuccio sets up Muak.

Though Mabil sounds like he is going to have a good season Mabil Brace Leads Australia to 4-1 Win Against Bermuda in NTC Invitational

CARSON, California (July 14, 2014) – Australia forward Awer Mabil scored twice and contributed an assist to lead the Australia Under-20 Men’s National Team over Bermuda 4-1 in the opening match of the 2014 National Training Center Invitational.

Australia dominated the ball for the majority of the game and outshot Bermuda 17-4, with seven shots on goal.

With the score tied through the first halftime, Australia took a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute when Mabil scored his second of the game, which would prove to be the game-winner. Hagi Gligor played a through ball to Daniel De Silva on the right side, and he passed it to Mabil for the finish.

Mabil got Australia on the score sheet in the 23rd minute, scoring from the left side after receiving a pass from Brandon Borello. Mabil’s shot was deflected by Bermuda keeper Jahquil Hill before bouncing into the goal.

Bermuda caught a break in the 41st minute when Australia recorded an own goal to tie the score at 1-1. Defender Scott Galloway deflected a pass by Bermuda that ended up getting by keeper Jordan Thurtell.

Australia put the match out of reach with two goals in second-half stoppage time. Marc Marino extended the lead for Australia to 3-1 with a goal in the second minute of stoppage time off of a Mabil assist. Stefan Mauk then scored just one minute later when he received a pass from Marino and chipped the ball over the keeper for the finish.

Australia tested Bermuda’s defense from the very start. In the 12th minute, midfielder Ben Garuccio shot from the left side and Hill blocked it with two hands. Australia almost broke through in the 16th minute, but Mauk’s shot from near the penalty mark hit the upper right corner and deflected over the goal. Mauk was set up by Garuccio, who dribbled into the box on the left side to free up Mauk before dropping a pass to the middle of the box.

Mabil was Australia’s top offensive catalyst, and he had an opportunity for a hat trick early in the second half. Mabil’s one-timer off of a cross in the 58th minute required an alert kick save from Hill to prevent Mabil from scoring a third goal and keep the score tight at 2-1 at the time.

Though Bermuda was out-shot dramatically, the team did hang around toward the end, including a second-half scoring chance from Zaire Burchall, who shot from just outside the box from the right side and forced Australia goalkeeper Thurtell to make a leaping save.

Australia returns to action against Chile on Wednesday, July 16, at 1 p.m. PT, the second day of the tournament at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center. Bermuda will then play the U.S. squad at 4 p.m. later that day.

Second game, Muak wins a free, leading to a goalMabil and De Silva Spark Australia’s Comeback Victory Against Chile

CARSON, California (July 16, 2014) – After surrendering four straight goals following an early 2-0 lead, Australia scored three straight, sparked by Awer Mabil’s second-half brace and Daniel De Silva’s 90th-minute go-ahead goal, to beat Chile 5-4 to open Day 2 of the 2014 National Training Center Invitational at “Mooch” Myernick Field on Wednesday.

Coming on as a sub in the 63rd minute of the U-20 event with Australia trailing 4-2, Mabil made an immediate impact and scored twice in four minutes to tie the score. He tallied a stunning goal in the 75th minute to draw Australia back to within one at 4-3. After midfielder Stefan Mauk was fouled roughly 10 yards outside the box, and Mabil took a free kick that sailed over the wall and into the upper right corner of the goal, freezing the Chile defense.

Mabil struck again in the 79th minute to draw Australia even at 4-4. Forward Brandon Borrello held the ball near the left corner after a long build-up and then laid the ball off to Mabil on the right side of the box. His right-footed shot crossed the goal and nestled inside the left post to tie the score.

Mabil also created the chaotic sequence that led to the winner. His shot in the 90th minute hit the right upright, deflected to the left across the goal and De Silva slotted home the rebound to earn the 5-4 lead that held up through stoppage time.

Mabil’s heroics were required after Chile came storming back from a 2-0 deficit to score four straight, seizing control of the match with a 4-2 lead in the 71st minute. Four different players scored for Chile in just over 30 minutes as Chile netted goals the 40th minute, the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, the 49th minute and the 71st minute.

After falling behind 2-0 in the 38th minute, Chile got back in the game just two minutes later when Ivan Pardo won the ball near the edge of the box and chipped Australia goalkeeper with a goal to cut the deficit to 2-1 when Ivan Pardo won a ball near the edge of the box and chipped past Australia goalkeeper Paul Izzo toward the right corner of the net.

Chile got its equalizer during first-half stoppage time when Cristian Cuevas converted a penalty kick. Chile then took the lead in the 49th minute as Bryan Carvallo finished a frantic sequence in front of the Australia’s goal with a header into the right corner on the rebound of a blocked shot. The lead reached 4-2 when Christopher Dias deflected a cross from Carvallo into the right corner of the net, a margin that seemed comfortable with just 19 minutes left in the match.

Marc Marino and Devante Clut scored Australia’s first two goals of the game in the 16th and 38th minutes, respectively.

With two victories, Australia now has six points, tying the U.S. atop the standings in points but sitting in second place on goal differential. The two squads will meet on Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m. PT at StubHub Center in the finale of the NTC Invitational. Chile will take on Bermuda in the first match of the day at 4 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ussoccer.com.

Aside from being a painfully blatant diver, Mabil is a huge talent.

It seems the only way to become a top footballing nation is to "play" the game.... that includes diving

I agree though, lets hope he gets rid of that from his game. Won't go down well with peopl in this country.

Did that actually curve "the wrong way"?  Pretty sure David Luiz's stunning strike against Columbia did as well.

Can anyone enlighten me on how you actually do this?

For those wondering WTF I'm talking about, If you hit the ball with your instep you should curl it in the instep direction. i.e.

If you hit with the lace/outside you should curl it in the outside direction.  i.e.

In both the Mabil & Luiz cases it seems the player has struck it with the instep but it may have curled towards the outside.  To make things even better (or worse, depending on who you are) both seem to have swung late.

Mauk copping a fair bit of criticism on 442 forums. Did Garuccio start at LB or LW? Or on bench

I noticed that as well, might just be victree trolls.

I assume lb for Garuccio, as Mabil play's forward and have been on at the same time. Sounds like he got plenty of game time and did alright, got an assist as well.
