The loss of Souttar was a massive set back for the campaign. More than I realised at the time.

I’m not in the “it’s all Arnolds fault” camp. Our squad is very weak (probably the weakest since about 1982) and qualification revealed Arnold is not a miracle worker.

    Where to from here?
Might as well try to beat UAE. Obviously we’ll be underdogs in that one. Fortunately it’s not home and away qualification, which increases the influence of luck, which we’ll need, particularly if we make it to the Peru game.

The good news is I think we have stopped getting worse now.

I think for all the doom and gloom, we still have a really strong chance of qualifying (deserved or not).

On current form, we probably lose to the UAE but like you said, they're one-leg knockouts where anything can happen (see Italy vs North Macedonia). Peru are hardly stacked as far as South American nations go either - yes, they're a far better team playing in a far more competitive confederation, but it's not an unachievable task in the slightest.

Reckon we're a 40% chance to qualify honestly.

Paramount have defintely been 1000000000x worse then fox sports have ever been.

I reckon they worked out pretty early on in the season that they weren't going to make a lot of money from broadcasting the a-league, which is why I think they're essentially half-assing it now. Do the bare minimum and save costs where you can istheir new motto.

Like ffs the APL or whoever had to write to them to tell them to stop putting ads on during live play lol, just shows you how they don't give a fuck about the product anymore.

    Yep, they very obviously dgaf

Somehow need to get it to Optus and pair it with the EPL to get interest back. Fox losing the EPL rights was a catalyst for dwindling interest in the A-League imo

Thats all great and I would like to see the same . But what would you suggest was done? Given covid cancellation of games and the odd bad weather postponements I hear a lot of people get upset but not suggest solutions. Fwiw I actually don't know the right answer myself. Push out the season makes sense. But with the world cup at our doorstep and stadium booking challenges i dont even know if this is viable.

I don't have the answers either but I think the viewership stats are pretty damning.

I guess I had just hoped we were done with dreadful timeslots in the afterlife post-Fox but if anything, it's been worse and it's having an obvious effect.

  4. I know comparing the A-League to the AFL is unfair given the gulf in available resources, but the AFL's pledge to play every game in the 2022 season as originally scheduled is exactly where I believe the A-League/APL has totally faltered this season.

West Coast will be missing 13 players for their game today and have to field top-up players from the WAFL, but it's these contingencies that are going to ensure that fans keep rocking up instead of losing interest as so many have in our A-League season due to the ridiculous fixturing and sporadic rescheduling.

Flexibility is usually a good thing, but I think the competition has been totally undermined because of the lack of ability to allow "the show to go on" at certain instances this season, and I think the AFL has nailed their no-budge stance.

And let's not forget Genreau, though he moved on from us before he went overseas. All these muppets online who say the A League does nothing to develop the next generation need to look at City. And IMHO also Adelaide who seem to be serious about youth as well.

    +1 regarding Adelaide

Carl Veart deserves praise for the amount of minutes he gives his youth players.

It's interesting that no one put any hope on the league Golden Boot.

Tbh, Fornaroli and Maclaren are very different strikers - and Bruno probably lends himself more to the Socceroos' style of play than Jamie.

That said, I kinda hope things get so desperate to the point that they both play. Would be pretty mad seeing my two favourite ever A-League players playing together.

Judging by the events that occurred in our active section last game not much.

    Touche.

I know the problems concerning the A-League are complex and plentiful but ffs, fixing active is so easy and would solve a lot more problems in turn (atmosphere, attendance, TV optics, general enthusiasm in the league etc.)

This all started going down hill when Lowe and Gallop turned their backs on supporters. No denying the bad apples within some of those groups but the manner in which it was done was terrible.

You're not wrong, it was definitely the catalyst for the collapse of active support which as of now, has never been weaker.

Just begs the question what the current group are doing differently. Is there a clear vision? Who tf knows.
