Is coming out as gay in 2021 really something that deserves this type of coverage? I feel as in doing it this way, he'll be forever judged and looked at as the gay footballer instead of a footballer who happens to be gay.

As a western society, I feel as if we have come a long way and are accepting people of different sexual orientations, races ext (we're not perfect obviously, but still) Outside of those who are close to him, is it really the buisness of the general public to know private information about how someone chooses to live there life?

Just seems like a whole lot of commotion about nothing imo

If it means a young kid who is gay might end up pursuing football thanks to Josh or better still, decide against killing himself - then yeah, I think it is

I guess that means more money for players inside the cap.

Definitely needed, given the season we put together. The club's done an amazing job at keeping the squad together, keeping the departures to a minimum and the new signings being perfect replacements.

Squads like Victory, WSW and Macarthur all look great on paper with the array of new high-calibre signings but I imagine there'll be a sizeable lag between expectations and results as there always is when teams end up needing time to gel.

Maybe a fully match fit Mooy could have been the difference,  but Irvine and Rogic and Hrustic for me don't have that skillset.

At the very least, Hrustic is definitely one to persevere with given his age and the fact he's been getting minutes in the Bundesliga, not to mention his above-average national team form.

I thought Rogic was okay but let himself down with his shooting, while Irvine is obviously not a holding mid and it showed.

I'm eager to see Arnie tinker with some of the squad next game as we have some really strong foundations, it just seems like more of a personnel issue and a lack of creativity on the pitch at the moment that's hurting us.

You had overestimated our position pre-game. We’d won 3 with 7 games to play, ok good start, but long way to go and we’d played the 3 weakest teams in our group.

Our lads are well coached and they try hard but they lack polish, so it will be hard work all the way.

Sorry, it was definitely meant as more of a sweeping statement as to how quickly things can change in football. The mood pre-game was very much one that painted Japan on the brink, yet 90 minutes later they're a direct threat to qualification again and everything is doom and gloom for us/Arnie apparently sucks etc.

AFC qualifying is always such a beast of a tournament and losing to Japan away was never going to be the difference in the end. If nothing else though, it has ramped up the pressure on us to beat the Saudis at home.

  4. Ryan was the sole reason we didn't lose by 3 or 4 tbh.

Aziz was dreadful, but Sainsbury and Souttar weren't far behind him. Defensively terrible, while the mids were okay but couldn't get the ball out wide often enough due to the insane Japanese press.

And just like that, we go from cruising in the group to suddenly finding ourselves with a must-win clash against the Saudis. Crazy.

Why doesn't Mooy start? Is he not up to it anymore??? Seemed not long ago he was getting BOG in the Premier league all of a sudden he's coming off the bench for the Socceroos? Is he not appreciated cos he plays in China now? Does he have to end up back in the a league for people to remember how good he was?

He looked a little off the pace for the first 5 minutes he was on but soon settled into that nice passing rhythm we all know and love. I guess it just comes down to fitness and minutes, something that Irvine, Hrustic and Rogic all have him covered for at the moment. That said, Mooy did more coming off the bench than Rogic did the entire game. Few frustrate like Rogic - his best is elite, but how often do we ever see it??

As for the Socceroos themselves though, what a win. Oman looked stylish as all hell out there first half and on the balance of play probably deserved more, but Arnold has us grinding out win after win at the moment, irrespective of the performance. Obviously an under-sieged Japan will be an enormous test and might tell us more about where we're at than any other game we've played throughout the past couple of years, but 11 straight is 11 straight. Arnold is the right man for this national team.

only 32.. proven he can be all class but injury prone.. could potentially absolutely dominate or be injured the whole season. Bruno, Sturridge, Keogh and Castro (if hes still there) could be pretty dangerous. Liam Reddy in goals still always solid

Is Castro confirmed to play for Perth in 2021/22? I have a feeling it's still not locked in, could be wrong though. Also, Brad Jones will certainly be their starting GK so they've got some pretty handy players.

Ultimately though, Garcia is still manager so I expect them to be shit. Sick that Sturridge is playing here though.

  7. I actually really like all 3 kits - I was sceptical about the white sleeves at first but with the new golden A-League logo (which isn't even that bad lmao) it looks pretty mint.

The red sash third kit is glorious though and will be the first kit I've bought in the City era.

  8. Get a load of this:

It's one thing to defend your club and the unacceptable current state of their stadium non-development, but it's another to take pot-shots at us for "training standards being not up to scratch" after moving away from a $14M state of the art facility to Casey where the construction of an even bigger, more professional facility is already underway. If our training standards aren't up to scratch coming off the season we just did, then what the hell does that make Nomad FC's?

I was all for giving these useless fucks the benefit of the doubt but jeez, the unfounded arrogance is deafening.

"Betterment of the game in Victoria" my ass.

we still have another midfielder on the way apparently, I wonder if it will be a more defensive minded player? This team needs a solid experienced 6 IMO for balance unless we were to trust O'Neill but he is not a traditional 6 imo. We could also go with Griffiths but he is quite injury prone now

O'Neill is definitely a capable 6 and performed to a really high standard in that position when he was able to get onto the pitch. I think he's better suited there as the anchor than as the box-to-box type that Metcalfe is anyway, as he reads the play well, can hit a sweet long ball and is tough as nails in the tackle. Griff was also having his best season with us prior to injury and if fit, he's a more than capable stop-gap solution both in that CDM position and as a centre back if needed.

I think the squad's perfect atm and should we sign anyone else, personally it's a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

  10. Pretty happy with this one based on the discourse alone as it seems he'll be a direct replacement for Luna - technical and strong work rate. Also comes to us with a handy pedigree (this doesn't guarantee success of course) but at a relatively good age at only 30, which is a lot younger than a lot of the geriatric VISA signings we've seen in the A-League over the years.

Providing no other players leave before the season starts, this is just about the final piece of the puzzle as far as I'm concerned. It'll be interesting to see whether the club thinks so too, or whether there's still one more signing lined up. Either way, we're absolutely stacked in every part of the field now - it's gonna be another really exciting season!!

Without much research i would suggest we played way more games in cooler temperatures and this for me was probably the major reason for the higher quality of games.

And yes not having those "older journeyman types" gave space for kids, and I reackon each team had 1 or 2 exciting yoof.

    This too, for sure

  12. I think the A-League journeymen and general recycling of players has actually started to thin a little bit.

Last season was unreal with regards to how many young kids got a decent crack, and unsurprisingly the calibre of matches was as good as it's ever been in our competition. If anything, the extra cap space + raised floor will hopefully mean we can play those young starlets what they're worth to keep them in the A-League a little while longer before they inevitably depart for Europe.

Either way, the investment is only a good thing.

Just my opinion - and probably unpopular - but I've hated the World Cup "finals" since South Africa, and I'd much prefer to see the tournament played home and away all the way through. Perhaps Regional first to narrow it down a bit and then thrown open across the world. I reckon a cleaner and more exciting tournament especially for the "less-powerful" countries.

That makes it a logistical nightmare though and effectively destroys the carnival-like format which I think is the World Cup's greatest strength - bringing countries and supporters from all over the world together for one month, unified by the game we all love so much.

I think we can put an end to the one-host country per tournament mantra at least though. Less white elephants, less economic pressure and a chance to represent more countries on the world stage.

Got the win in Hanoi. Based on the “highlights” not a lot to write home about, but the points are important.

If we were in any doubt, qualification with the players at our disposal will be challenging.

I watched the full 90 and it was really dire from our perspective. Crap pitch, insane temp/humidity and the Vietnamese were honestly quite a tactically well set-up team.

That said, for our lack of flashy, creative types in the side, we've won our last 10 qualifiers and long gone seem the days of losing the unlosable games we did in the past. If anything, Arnold doesn't get enough praise considering how much he's managed to get out of what is a pretty average talent pool.

AFC qualification has always been results over performance, but the real challenge is going to be taking that next step and winning with flair - otherwise we're not going to do anything upon reaching the World Cup and by that stage, what's the point in merely just qualifying?

  15. ah fuck, we got Japan lmao.

I think we've got a great group otherwise - the Saudis will be tough but I think we've got them covered. We struggle more against Iraq and Syria than we do Oman and China and I think we'll be too good/strong for Vietnam, though they will surprise these qualifiers and could definitely finish 3rd if they have a good run.
