natalie182
I'm going. Heard a couple of other Heart fans say they are.
HEARTinator
If I can get there I will. It's really important that Heart is seen to be part of these events and that it's not just Tard windbags who hog the forum. Melbourne is Red&White after all. Popular Post HEARTinator
Went along to the fan forum and about 100 people showed up. Here are some quick notes. Kyle Patterson chaired the forum and panel members were David Gallop, Damien de Bohun and Steve Horvat. Michael Lynch was in the audience and so was George Donikian (TV presenter and Heart fan). To give some structure, the discussion followed a few themes: 1/ Promotion of the game (for instance the slogan "We Are Football") 2/ Players 3/ Socceroos 4/ Grassroots Conversation started with the negative media around the WSW v MV game and people asking what can be done. Neil Mitchell got mentioned and well as Eddie McGuire who apparently made some crap comments recently about football. FFA view is that yes the media is hostile but we should make sure we don't give them ammo. So people doing the the wrong thing at games won't be tolerated. FFA said next HAL season will see a match of the round broadcast on SBS. They want a good quality game shown live on FTA as part of promoting the league. I guess we'll wait and see how this will be structured. Comments from the audience about the positive benefits of including women when promoting the HAL especially since we have a strong female participation in football competitions and Matildas doing well. The marquee player concept was discussed. General agreement that it can work but of course need to pick the right player that can deliver on the pitch and is recognisable off the pitch. Also shouldn't neglect development of youth. Don't need old failures like Romario who are here mainly for a holiday and a pay cheque. Also need plenty of $$$$. Socceroos discussion was really interesting because nobody was overly enthusiast about seeing our current national team. Seems like the current team isn't generating enough interest. Someone made the comment that the HAL gives them plenty of interest and the current Socceroo team doesn't. Playing the next WCQ at Etihad got the thumbs done (but that's where it will be played anyway say FFA). AAMI was overwhelmingly favoured as a venure. It seems that people are reluctant to pay big bucks to see Socceroos v Jordan at Etihad. Also discussion why other capital cities like Perth don't get Socceroo games. Last one there was in 2005 against Indonesia. Grassroots discussion focussed on the cost of kids playing footbal and compensation back to state league teams when players move to HAL. One guy said he pays around $1000 for his son to play. FFA said they only get a small amount and FFV said similar. Seems like the majority of the $1000 goes to the local club to cover expenses and payment to coaches, etc. Gallop said the the NRL can offset costs for juniors through the income received from pokies and AFL has a big media deal. A Melbourne Knights person said they get very little fnancial return for players they have developed and who then make the next step to the HAL e.g. Dugandzic. They recongise they will never be in the HAL but their aim is to keep producing the next generation of young talent. FFA said they were willing to talk to Melbourne Knights about this (not sure where this is headed though). Overall a really good night. I would recommend that at our next Heart Fan Forum we also have a slightly more structured approach to help us focus on important topics. And I think it wouldn't hurt to invite a person like Michael Lynch or Dave Davutovic to give us an outsiders perspective and feedback.
Tbitm
Thanks for the summary of the forum. Did anyone ask what venues will be used for the asian cup?
RFC56
Thanks for the concise report. I was thinking of going, but thought it may have degenerated into an "us against them" debate over the recent negative press we've had. Will definitely go next time. Also agree with your comments on the next Heart Fan Forum being more tightly structured.
HEARTinator
Thanks for the summary of the forum. Did anyone ask what venues will be used for the asian cup? Yep, that was a point raised in relation to spreading more Socceroos matches around Australia. Gallop said that choice of venues really got down to which state governments were prepared to fork out money to get games to their cities. He said running the event was an expensive exercise and FFA had to rely on $$$$ from governments and sponsors to stage the event. So it turns out that games will be in on the eastern side of Australia in NSW, Vic, checking the internet, also in Queensland and ACT. Gallop said Melbourne would host the opener and that Melbourne would get one of the finals - I was left with the impression that it would one of the semi-finals. Wait and see. Did they say whether there would be an even distribution of games or would Victory/Sydney get more games due to ratings?

Still a work in progress BUT they will be ones that would have major interest and would act to promote the HAL on FTA - so I can imagine derbies, etc would fit into their thinking. FFA Cup got a mention and everyone wants it. Just a matter of finalising sponsorship, etc
hedaik
Its going to be a fine juggling act for HAL to have an even spread of games across teams, but at the same time keeping ratings and crowd numbers up.

HEARTinator
Interesting announcement from SBS http://www.theage.co...0220-2eqc1.html A quote from the article: The channel would also carry SBS's A-League coverage, including a flagship weekly game in a 7.30pm timeslot on a Friday. "That blockbuster Friday night game will be on SBS2. This channel will be the home of domestic football," Mr Iffland said. "This is a fabulous defining piece for this channel.” Edited February 19, 2013 by HEARTinator
