Yeah nah, I'll just attend games in GA this season for now before buying a membership again.

Very much in the wait and see camp.

    Same.

Last year in particular was enough to make me a very bitter man that will take a while to get over that.

  2. I do think that the shorts should be white with the home kit, but I like both of them.

I have noticed that the shirts that the manager and support staff were wearing at training seem to be red and white, which is different to past seasons.

It should be fairly clear though by now that the club has moved on from its Heart days, so expecting them to do anything but a token gesture here and there is likely just going to lead to disappointment.

Interesting, Brillante on 500k - marquee or serious under the cap contract? No wonder there is no money to sign Bart and or Brattan.

Are we finally going to have our money on the park with youth as fringe players?

Honestly I’d prefer us to go develop more youth players than what we have seen over the past couple of years.

Build a solid experienced core and then have youth players fill the remainder of the roster. With our manager having the level of youth development experience that he has, this should be a strategy that can pay off, especially with some of the talent that we have in the academy/youth set up.

If this club wants to be taken seriously, we need to deliver a style of football that excites, and having quality youth talent on the park can be our X factor in that regard. Looking forward to it.

Melbourne Victory may have had more success than us, but their youth development record certainly shows they have prioritised results over anything else. This is a chance to be a true point of difference, especially if the brand of football meets the high bar that the new manager has now set for the club.

I'm wondering what sort of emphasis we'll be placing on the W-League this coming season. What with "return on investment" and all that.

It certainly has been quiet on the W-League front from the club.

How is the women’s academy doing? I must admit I don’t know much about the set up for the development pathway at the club for the women’s team, but one would hope there is some talent coming through that can move into the senior team.

After winning the competition for the past 3 seasons,  it may well be the case that the club will likely now have less appetite to spend big, instead looking at development opportunities.

I guess we will wait and see.

  5. I tend to see a team playing out of Dandenong as a strong addition to the league.

The reasons that I see it as a stronger proposition to South Melbourne include:

    - Significant local government support

    -  In a region that has no top tier football code representation, giving our sport a strong position to build from

    - If they can get a stadium and training complex built as depicted, that would be a huge value add in terms of facilities. It will only work though if the club plays matches out there, so that is the key

    - it’s a big region, far from the central city area where MV and MC play. This is a big point of difference from SMFC, as they are also based in the inner city

Overall, although SMFC has the facilities and an established structure, there is likely far more upside from a South East Melbourne club.

Maybe SMFC should invest in the South East club and look to build a partnership that way. Might be their only way in at this rate, as it would give them an opportunity to provide the pathway for their players and for fans to have a link to the A-League. The reality is that those fans of SMFC may not jump on board though even if the club did invest.

MV and MC still have their regions they can focus on in other areas of the Melbourne and the state, and this South East option would likely have the least impact on the existing clubs.

  6. Let’s be honest, we have had a side that has played some of the most exciting football over the last couple of years but couldn’t quite get consistent success on the scoreboard.

Lets put something into perspective though, looking at WSW in the first couple of years was like watching paint dry, but they got success and built a supporter base quickly. It’s not all about exciting football to some. Fans want success and will invest in a winner, but that has certainly not been our club over its time in the league.

To continue to play exciting, attacking football creates major risks at the back, which has been our Achilles heel. Making sure we improve defensively is key to giving ourselves a stronger chance at winning the league, so it will be interesting to watch.

  7. People get far too hung up on attendances.

Yes, we would all love to see more at matches but it just seems many get so side tracked by trying to count the seats filled and don't focus on the actual game on the park.

The FFA Cup success was a big step in the right direction and it is now up to the club to build on that confidence.

From what I can tell, many former and current fans are still watching on to see when they should really start to 'believe' in what is being offered.

  8. Anyone aware if the building closest to the 3 community pitches is still used by the university? Could be another interesting addition to the CFA complex in future.

It certainly is exciting to see what the club has achieved with the facilities.

The only downside is that there does not appear to be significant space to build additional pitches on the site.

  9. If Manchester City do sign him, this just plays into the words that a member of CFG stated a few months ago about having discussions with Mooy after the season to discuss potential options.

They would be silly to give up a chance to keep him on their books when there is upside in his value if he does well in Europe.

As I suggested about the club signing Arzani, this is the reason that CFG invested here. It makes good business sense if they can find good talent, sign them up and if all goes well it creates a global pathway that is mutually beneficial.

  10. Sounds like CFG connection was very much in play with this signing.

It is the type of signing that they would love to really pay off for the future and another reason they invested here in the first place.

  11. I have mixed feelings about Cahill joining the club.

Of course the short term PR win that the FFA and City will gain will be significant, but where does that leave the focus for us on the park?

We are a club that has tried the guest player card before with Villa and look how that ended up. It destabilised the team in the end and made the club look like a joke in the process when it needed to get it right.

Then it comes down to how we fit Cahill into the system on the park. Bruno has to play up front and Cahill's best position is that same spot. It just doesn't seem like a situation that will bring great benefits.

Oh well, if we do keep Bruno, sign Cahill and a foreign playmaker it will certainly show that City have stepped up their investment in the club.

Just hope it's not another misguided attempt at trying to boost crowds wothout considering the risks on the park.

  12. Kamau would be a big pick up, but I am not sure letting Melling and Garuccio go makes sense.

Both of them have offered a fair bit for us and have potential to take further strides in their careers.

I am yet to hear any player actually publicly credit JVS for taking their game to the next level though which is damning.

    lol his bants arent bad

Yeah totally poor form in that one.

Must have been some seriously bad blood between him and the club for him to carry on like he has.

  14. Why hasn't Mike focused on Sydney FC?

To me the biggest disappointment is them. The reasons why include:

    - Had the market to themselves for over 6 years

    - Has had a fairly successful time on the park over its time

    - Has had 2 of the biggest marquees in the comps history (Del Pierro and Yorke)

    - Has not invested anything significant in facilities or an academy over its time

    - Still can't hold the interest of crowds and struggles to get more than 15k at the best of times

    - Lost significantly hefty amounts of cash over its time

If Mike took off his SFC rose coloured glasses for once he would see that even by investing big money in big name marquees it still doesn't guarantee continued support.

Going on to discuss big losses for City just glosses over all the years that SFC have bled red ink on their P&L.

It's time to be fair Mike. Yes, CFG may have made mistakes but it's by no means a situation that one should overlook some even more worrying issues in your own backyard.
