LR9
The Melbourne Heart have convincingly defeated the Newcastle Jets 3-0 at John Cain Park, doing what the senior side couldn’t do hours before. Heart took a two goal lead into the half-time break through Paulo Retre and Evan Batsis then capped off the victory with a Zac Walker strike. Just like their seniors the Heart got off to a superbstart as a clearance fell for Retre, the ex-Victory youngster then belted a half-volley into the top corner past Jack Duncan. The Jets pushed with James Virgili and Craig Goodwin down the flanks, with the former cutting in causing problems on the right, but Heart ‘keeper Andrew Redmayne was solid in goals for the Red and White. On 22 minutes the Heart doubled their lead as a magnificent Ersin Kaya through-ball found Jeremy Walker down the right. The attacking fullback then dragged Duncan towards the right, before crossing for an unmarked Evan Batsis who easily slotted into the empty net. Retre was on great form in the centre of the park turning brilliantly beating a couple opposition midfielders. Golgol Mebrahtu on the right flank could have had further extended Heart’s lead, although the former Gold Coast forward’s shot was poked straight at Duncan. A Jets clearance then fell for Kaya, but the former Moreland Zebra scuffed the guilt edge chance off target. Virgili and midfielder Mitchell Oxborrow continued to muster chances for Newcastle, but the former was denied by Redmayne, before the latter drove wide. Substitute Kale Bradbery continued his fine form, but Redmayne continued his magnificent form with a series of great saves. Substitute Zac Walker then added a third for the Heart running on the end of a through ball, before sneaking his strike past substitute ‘keeper Nicholas Hartnett. cadete
Paulo Retre's opener was near as good a goal as any I have seen in a Heart Shirt. A pity that at the stage only two yarrasiders were present, although shortly we did become three.
