  1. -Well I define passion as raw emotion something which i see that the Melbourne derby has less of then the Sydney derby.

-I base it on the Melbourne derby being a manufactured rivalry between "Red v Blue". Whilst the Sydney derby actually has some sort of history and cultural rivalry to it.

-Not saying Melbourne derby isn't passionate. Just saying at THIS POINT IN TIME that the Sydney derby seems to be more of a classic fixture because of the whole East vs West thing.

-Though the Melbourne derby can be bigger just needs more history behind it.

As a Sydney fan I disagree - the Melbourne derby has far more passion at the moment because it has some history. According to all at SFS on Saturday it was a great atmosphere, but when I speak to my SFC friends the general vibe is still that the whole thing feels quite forced. Sure we play along, but the feeling isn't there yet. Although if the RBB continues to insist on marching past our pub to start shit then it is sure to grow.

  2. Highly doubt he'll go to Mariners - thought they were taking a swipe at Sydney earlier on in the season about "bling", yet reportedly after Beckham and ADP.

Everyone takes a swipe at us about 'bling' when it's convenient. Happy to have the tag, although it would be much nicer if we weren't holding up the table right now. :) At least it's helping me to develop a more measured perspective about football.

  3. Cant be arsed finding the article, but I read somewhere this morning that CCM are going to try and lure Del Piero to Gosford

    *found it

    http://www.smh.com.a...1218-2bl50.html

If Turnbull is successful in his quest, Beckham would join the Mariners for the second half of the A-League season and stay on for the ACL campaign, while Del Piero would see out the year at Sydney FC before switching to the Mariners.

The only thing working for them here is the fact that ADP hasn't had the misfortune of going to Gosford yet.

  4. Apparently FFA dont want WSW to get Beckham because they think it will be a bad look.

The FFA are worried about appearances all of a sudden?!?! Works for me though, and I am pretty sure Posh wouldn't want to live in Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide.

  5. I'm sorry but that is just so SFC(BlingFC). The signing of a star recruit for mega-bucks to try and shake the cultural cringe of Australian Football and its workmanlike league means more to your fans/club than the embarking upon a new period in the club's history with the introduction of new team in YOUR OWN CITY and effectively changing in the entire sporting landscape of Sydney and the country. The gap in the mentality between our administrations and supporters is so incredibly vast tbh.

This smacks of the same arrongant Victory-isms that were trotted out on the eve of our inception. Replace WSW with MHFC in your post and see if you think any of us would agree. This is not a jibe or jingoistic crack at you but you might be on the wrong forum tbh as intra-city rivalry is foremost in the minds of MHFC supporters and you might find more palatable views about the subject on MVFC.net.

Keep ADP. Ill have the Derby della Melbourne any day. ;)

Sorry, I genuinely did not mean to cause offence. I will try to explain (hopefully more eloquently but think I will struggle!) why I don't feel a great rivalry with them yet.

I know in Melbourne a sporting culture of intra-city rivalry is well ingrained but that's not the sporting culture I grew up with. As a young lass my most hated sporting team was the Canterbury Bulldogs because, as a Parramatta Eels fan in the 80s, my team played them in a number of grand finals and developed a "history" with them. A lot of older Parramatta fans feel the same about Manly because of the 1970s. It's been my personal experience growing up following sport in Sydney that what develops a rivalry in Sydney is a series of events, not a geographical boundary. Others might not agree but that's how I feel about it.

As a result of this in season 1 of the a-league I felt no great rivalry for any team. Then we played CCM in the Grand Final. That became a rivalry which grew over a few seasons for me after I got capsicum sprayed at Bluetongue, after the epic 5-4 win which saw me sustain bruises to my legs so severe I couldn't walk the next day and after getting sick of dealing with their bogan fans. I didn't hate Victory until observing their fans beat up female friends of mine and just cause a whole load of unnecessary shit over an extended period of time. Oh and the Kevin Muscat factor. That never helped.

So what I guess I am saying is the main reason I feel nothing more than curiosity about WSW is because they haven't given me a reason to hate them yet. Just being in my city isn't enough for me personally. I grew up in Western Sydney and, had they introduced a Western Sydney team from season 1, there is every chance I would have been a Wanderers fan. I feel like this rivalry is being hyped at the moment and my personal feeling is not there - hence why I called it a "manufactured" rivalry. I am certainly looking forward to the game and am happy to have two sides playing the highest level of football in my city but I don't feel about it the way I do about playing Victory or CCM. YET. I welcome the organic development of a strong rivalry though.

On the arrogance front I am not sure what part of my feeling would indicate any arrogance - I certainly don't question the legitimacy of WSW or their right to exist in "my city" like so many Victory supporters seem to do with Heart. On form they are doing better than my team at the moment and they have done well in attracting members. I don't see them as insignificant and I don't think there is anything about my club that makes us inherently better than them.

In summary, please don't banish me to MV.net, show some humanity!

*Apologies for the essay, I am home sick and really should not be trusted with a computer and a football forum.

  6. Lol I don't want to make this look like a pissing contest but the reason we have never been held successfully, despite being the "Designated Hold" supporter group at almost every Derby, is that Heart fans at Derbies are notoriously hard to detain after match conclusion due them being in their own city and not recognizing the need for an 'escort' etc.

Fan groups that visit when they play Victory ie SFC, Jets, Adelaide etc actively wait for the hold and stay together as a group as they are vastly outnumbered in a 'foreign' city. Btw Im not saying this is a bad thing.

That's the difference. I also predict it being very difficult for NSWPol and Hato to be able to Hold WSW supporters in their own city on the weekend.

No pissing contest necessary. Was just curious about the seemingly different approaches and being a little bit cheeky!

The design of Parramatta Stadium might make it a bit easier to keep groups in. It is hard enough to get out of there when it is a large crowd and they aren't trying to keep you in the stands, let alone when they are.

It will be interesting to see if the Eastern Beaches Tifo Crew deem a Derby more important that ADP's first Home Game in terms of Tifo.

Have zero knowledge of our plans in this regard but my assumption would be a home derby would be the place we would do larger than normal Tifo for the "derby". Also reasonably confident ADP's home debut was considered more important. I could most definitely be wrong about this though too but the feeling around ADP's first home game was pretty special.

My own feeling about this weeks "derby" is more curiosity than anything else and I know many other SFC fans feel the same. You can't manufacture a rivalry - I am sure WSW hates us more than we hate them. We have years of rivalry with other clubs, what do they have? The enemy on the other side of Homebush! I appreciate the "potential" for there to be a great rivalry here, just don't think it is a reality yet. It might be by Sunday though!

  7. No - We have never been properly been held for any length of time...

Clearly not well 'ard enough then! :P

Once they herded us into the ground level courtyard area of a function room for a "free BBQ". Only thing separating courtyard from the outside concourse was a 1.5m high glass barrier. On the other side - a large number of the dirty scums less desirable members. That was when we discovered how much the bastards love to throw coins. Good work VicPol!

  8. TBH I dont know why this stuff is not more of the norm in Australia.

It will eventually happen at all of the Melbourne Derbies IMO as well - It will just take a few bad incidents first before it becomes common place.

Do you guys not get held back when you are the away team at Etihad?

When SFC plays at Etihad we always get held in the stadium for 30 minutes after and a police escort to a point far enough away from the stadium that the cops deem us to be "safe".

Only thing that seems odd to me about the approach for Saturday night is that the RBB is being held, not The Cove. Makes it clear where they are expecting the trouble to come from.

  9. How is SFC's Current Keeper even getting a game?

In fact what is with the choice of Shite Keepers in general at Eastern Beaches FC since Bolts walked out?

Bolts "walked out" eh? :D I love Bolton (he had his best season in the league his first season with your mob) but he had no "choice" when he left - we didn't offer him a contract. I do think that was a shit decision by the club and the only reasons I can offer are all based on rumour so don't particularly want to go into it!

And I have no logical answer as to why we don't seem interested in signing a good keeper. Salary cap?

  10. So what's going on with SFCs defence? Surely they will park the bus next game vs WSW so they don't concede WSW first ever goal. That would be awkward.

Missing Bosschaart immensely and young kids are carrying McFlynn. Our defence needs attention, our midfield needs attention.

Parking the bus would be the worst thing we could do (particularly when our bus is full of holes at the moment). Need to win, not draw.

And yes, it would be awkward but is also entirely possible. Bridge will probably score it as well to rub salt in the wound (Although I doubt anything he does could make any of us less happy to be rid of him).

Overall, rather nervous about it. Glad I am not making the trip, don't need the inevitable drama.

  11. Not sure which ones he is referring to, but I did notice that the cove were doing Just Cant Get enough on Sat. I am not implying that it was copied from us (for starters we didnt make it up) but I dont think I have heard Sydney do that one before or have I just not noticed?

Have also heard Perth and Wellington do this one recently too

You haven't noticed it seems - been around a while - couldn't tell you exactly when we started but there is Youtube footage of us doing it in Newcastle January 2010. In my experience it goes down like a lead balloon in The Cove so it isn't regularly done.

Y-Side to start charging other terraces a song import tax next financial year.

Going to start paying taxes too then? Pretty sure YS would suffer heavily under the exchange rate from AUD to EUR - your meagre income from Aussie terraces isn't going to cover it! :)

  12. A great signing.

Grella is a good player but one of the most valuable things he will bring to Heart is his experience and (most of the time!) maturity. For any squad with a "youth" focus it is great to have a player like that around.

    Congrats folks!

  13. I'm watching the replay now is it just me or does the cove sound a lot like Yarraside? I've lost count 3 songs exactly the same.

The cove copys everyone in this league.. Im surprised they havent taken tifosi yet.. But then again english style is more their thang.. d-_-b

I am a Cove member who is Melbourne based so also go to Heart games to get a regular football fix.

I am genuinely interested in which songs you think we have "copied" from YS. I was rather drunk on Saturday night but am struggling to think of anything we did that night that you could claim you did first? Actually, I am struggling to think of many songs that we do that YS also do to be honest.

The only "new" Cove songs I remember doing were "Rhythm of My Heart" (which is a few seasons old now and definitely NOT a YS song) and our "new" one for Del Piero which is actually just a lyric change on an old song we (and many others in the league) stole from overseas many seasons ago.

  14. Don't know about that, looks like he gave a fuck but wasn't fit enough for the game. I think he'll get better in time.

Struggling with what most high quality international players struggle with in our league - marked difference in his skill level and the skill level of those around him. Further, he has played one friendly with the team - it's going to take time for him to get used to playing alongside these people. I don't think anyone could accuse him of not giving a fuck. He seems to have had a pretty good idea of what he was going to be up against coming out here but was clearly frustrated at various points during the game which is natural.

ADP aside we were truly awful on Saturday evening. Not panic stations yet though, we have traditionally been shit in the opening rounds of the season so it's business as usual for us as far as I am concerned. Will panic around round 5 if no improvement (that being said I am going up to Sydney for game next weekend so it would be nice if they could at least give it a go).

  15. Or maybe they're learning their lessons on what it takes for these expansion teams to succeed. While there is obvious competition, the clubs know that their future rests almost entirely in the success of the league as a whole.

If this was necessary for Western Sydney to get up and running then surely it could have been applied to all clubs.

  16. Does this hint at a guest appearance to anyone else?

Whether or not this Ballack thing proves true, I cannot believe this has not been raised yet from that Fox Sports article (and not just for the poor use of the English language):

"It is understands that the other A-League clubs made a remarkable offer in July to allow the Wanderers short-term dispensation to sign a small number of extra overseas players, given the tightness of the market in Australia."

Whilst I would love to see as many quality players as we can in the A-League (preferably not wearing Navy though) it seems like a load of crap to me that WSW be given this kind of concession. Just because the FFA decided to bring them in in a ridiculously hastened fashion the rest of the clubs dole out concessions to them? My club alone already released two local players from contracts to give them to WSW without the usual compensation for player release (and yes, insert evil laugh here because of the calibre of player they took off our hands!).

If I were a New Zealand Knights, Gold Coast United, NQ Fury or even Heart supporter I would be going nuts asking why this club gets so many concessions where others didn't. Yet more evidence of the Mickey Mouse nature of the administration of our sport.
