True enough, but as I saw someone else point out recently, none of our senior team, EDS and U18s have lost a single game in any competition since the 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in November...

It may well be true that you saw it somewhere fella, and well done you for pointing that fact out here.

  3. On that subject though, are City fans surprised at how strongly the EPL is followed down here and how many of us already have strong allegiances to particular teams?

Not at all.  Some will have emigrated to Australia with their club allegiances, some will have adopted their parents' club allegiances, some will have followed their friends' allegiances, some will have started to support successful teams, some will have started to support prominent teams, and some will have started to support teams for the seemingly most inconsequential of reasons.  I know this because, as we know from Bluemoon, City is supported around the world for all of these reasons.  And some in Australia will, quite naturally, support teams in other national leagues for exactly the same reasons.

And what I believe is that, once past a certain age, that commitment will be lifelong.  Very much like religion.  I would put that age at fairly young, say up to early adolescence, when the individual starts to appear.  Consequently, I believe that someone who comes to football as an adult will not be as committed to a chosen team as would be the case in childhood.

  4. City drawn at home to Chelsea in the 6th round (last 16) of the FA Cup. It is Maureen's birthday today so what a birthday present that was! Chelsea have just managed a 1-0 home win against Stoke today - an Oscar free kick. The game at Etihad Stadium should be good to watch, to be played the weekend of 15-16 February.

The other draw of the round is Arsenal vs Liverpool. Everton will be at home to Swansea, which should also be a cracker. That's most of the televised (in UK) matches taken care of, if not all of them - I don't follow what the satellite broadcasters do.

  5. Haha! Just noticed the closing date! Either the closing date hasn't been edited properly in the email template or I've been deliberately excluded from the survey(!) Can't remember having received it already. Haven't tried to complete the survey yet - finding 15 minutes to concentrate and pontificate is not so easy!

  6. It has been mentioned that Man City canvas the opinion of supporters.  This is an example.

The email received today.  As the links may include coding to identify me, I have replaced the links to the survey with imitation links.

    Dear Mark

As we approach the business end of the season, we would like to hear about your matchday experiences at the Etihad Stadium.

With sixteen home matches under our belts already and more big games to come, it is important to us that we get your feedback on how the Club has been performing on and off the pitch. Whether you've been to one match or all sixteen, your views and opinions really matter to us.

This survey is your opportunity to comment on all aspects of the matchday experience, including the match atmosphere, BT City Square and catering. The survey also includes an opportunity to share your own thoughts and questions about the club.

We have tried to keep the number of questions to a minimum. The survey will require approximately 15 minutes of your time, but it may vary based on your responses.

    Official Manchester City Fan Survey.

    Thank you for your support
    Manchester City Football Club.

Please note the survey will remain open for completion until Midnight Wednesday 22nd January.

And this is the first page of the survey, omitting the array of radio buttons, which I can't get to be reproduced here.

    The season so far

Taking all things into account, as a City fan, how satisfied are you with each of the following?

Using the scale below please score each item. 0 = Extremely dissatisfied and 10 = Extremely satisfied.

    The manager
    This team's performances this season
The senior management (e.g., Directors, CEO, etc)
    Ticket prices
    The club's recent development
    Direction the club is going
    Attention to fans

  7. You'll probably hear the word "holistic" bandied about at some point. Essentially, the idea is for the club to be seen as one entity-from the under 10's to the first team.

Each of our teams, from the kids to the first team is being coached to play the same style of football, so eventually it should be like a conveyor belt, you just progress through the ranks over time. The first team coach Manuel Pelegrini was asked to sum up the ethos for how the team plays, he gave a very simple answer "win the ball, keep the ball, score many goals". He's been true to his word. We're just over half way through the season & so far we've scored 108 league & cup goals.

That's why I don't think you'll be treated as a "Mini Man City", it just wouldn't work over two continents, they seem to want each club to be a complete self contained unit, going from academy right through to first team, and I think it'll be awesome for the Australian game to have a facility churning out players year after year. Sure, we'll share ideas, facilities & best practise, it'd be stupid not to. MHFC will now have access to the most advanced coaching and sports science complex in the world, as well as a global scouting network, and over the coming years I imagine they'll want to build a facility along the same lines in Melbourne.

I was talking to some mates at the match today about the Heart deal, and we don't see you as a Man City Light, or a feeder club or a franchise of us, everyone I've spoken to here sees you as "the brothers from down under"-a separate club but an equal part of the family, the difference in scale is purely down to the game being established for longer over here. As of now, Heart have got a shitload more fans over here ;)

Actually 110 goals in 36 games, so just over 3 goals per game, and 4 per home game.  This is a lot!

  8.

Speculation is rife that Heart will change its colours to sky blue, City's strip, and its name to Melbourne City FC, so its initials will be the same as its owners.

That would certainly please the Australian branch of the Manchester City supporters club, who are ready to throw their lot in with Heart - as long as they do not play in the red colours of City's hated Manchester rival, United.

    ...

For City supporters Down Under the strip is non-negotiable.

Alan Howarth was a season ticket-holder at Maine Road and the City of Manchester Stadium before moving to Australia, and is secretary of the Melbourne Manchester City Supporters Club.

He is adamant what must happen for Heart to win the affections of City supporters: "I am not sure if the true Manchester City fans will support Heart playing in red. We all know who that reminds them of.

This just sounds like the media trying to stir up a story.  "Speculation is rife" is just that, speculation.  To say that the reason the name may be changed is "so its initials will be the same as its owners" just shows the risibly poor quaity of the reporting.

Mr Alan Howarth is then selected to speak on behalf of not just all City supporters in Melbourne but all city supporters in Australia.  Honestly what a load of pugwash.  Basically, the issue has got nothing to do with City supporters in Melbourne, Australia or anywhere.

Two things you must remember: City, like any other club, has its fair share of ignorant, bigotted, small-minded, unimaginative, self-centred twats; and, secondly, not everyone on forums (or appearing in the media) who purports to be a City fan is actually a City fan - you will no doubt come across some here or on Bluemoon, along with the windup and just plain insensitive City fans.

  9. I almost feel like Heart not being in the name will make me like it more. Being officially called Heart is like giving yourself a nickname. It's just not cool.

If we become City then I will be nostalgic for Heart and feel proud I was part of Heart. When yarraside sng "you are in my heart, I will follow you" etc it will have even greater depth.

"We are the Heart, the Heart of the City!"  Yeah, possibilities for chants...

Just remember that no matter what happens to your club's name, no one can steal your Heart. ;0)

Nicknames are for the supporters and for how you refer to your own club.  City supporters refer to one another and the team as Blues.  The term Citizens has fallen out of favour amongst supporters, the younger ones anyway, more recently, although it is still used by the print media when writing about City.

  10.

My stream cut out early in the second half so I missed the best (and worst) of it.  If the City way is the Heart way in the future, you will not try to defend a lead but keep trying to score more.  This makes for very exciting football as the lead can be lost by being too adverturous as much as by sitting back if those extra goals aren't forthcoming.

So, Sydney at home on Friday at 7.30pm?  If today's was 6.30am, then I make the Sydney game 9.00am UK time and a game well worth catching - a benefit of being retired!

It might be a bitter-sweet moment for you; seeing your sister club in Red & White defeat the club wearing sky blue! haha

Actually, I'm pretty relaxed about it, and for three very good reasons.

    • Heart don't play in an all red shirt and white or black shorts.  That would be really difficult if you did.  I like red as a colour (some don't and won't have anything to do with it) and love our red and black kits.
    • Sydney won't be in sky blue and white.  It is the colour combination that's important.  Probably most traumatic for Heart's Spurs fans!
    • I have no special affinity for Sydney FC, whereas youHeart supporters seem to be a good bunch of blokes, very like City supporters in your treatment of your (pre-takeover) situation with gallows humour.

I'll tell you what was disconcerting though: seeing City play in Naples in the Champions League the year before last.  Napoli looked like City and City looked like AC Milan!  Very discombobulating.
