Craig Noone

Nice left foot, the youtube tape backs up the press statement. This type of signing has become a staple now, that early 30's Championship level player with nice ball skills = Adam Le Fondre, Ross McCormack, Richie DeLaet and now Craig Noone. (Autocorrect tried to tell me he was No-one )

Cryptic post from City on twitter, guessing it’s the Noone announcement

Scheduled for 12pm. Could be the announcement of Mombaerts, Noones and re-signing of Bart and Brattan?

A super-mega-press conference announcing all of those would be great!

Welcome Craig!

The dead hand of Petrillo.

I don't have a problem. Petrillo has been in Manchester, undoubtedly knows who our next manager is, and any signings will have the latter's approval.

If it is Mombaerts, he's not a dickhead like Joyce, who signed a player (O'Halloran) and then fell out with him. Mombaerts is a mature, thoughtful coach with a wealth of experience, and I'd be satisfied that he knows what he is doing.

Mate that's super optimistic.

I don't know Mombarets apart from what's online, but what I do know is all and I will repeat ALL of CFG coaching appointments have been dubious and until he proves otherwise I'm not going to be satisfied that he knows what's he doing.

@Jovan You mean City coaches, or every appointment at all clubs in the CFG stable?

No just Melbourne city senior men's.

That's a harsh call IMO. JvS did win us something, and then was probably distracted by his father's illness well before he resigned, and IMO Joyce was adequate for the first season, and at one point had a win percentage of 50% for us. I agree that Valkanis was a poor choice as interim coach, and I agree CFG should not have let the Fornaroli stand-off happen.

TBH I'd be more critical of CFG's performance over marquee players.

nice goals but remember Budders Highlights?

Budzinskiiiiiiiii

This is exactly what I thought.

Still - you cannot quash pre season optimism. Its kind of like we know where we are at, and are waiting to be proven wrong. Each sign is a potential indication we might be at somewhere we do not know, but know we want to be at. Being not yet at where we want to be at, whilst knowing we could be at, but not yet at, the yet to be at where we want to be at. It is quite simple when you boil it down.

Anyone notice the "heart shaped points on either side of the badge" in his signing photos? It's like they forgot to erase the instructions on the design of the badge. Lol

@KSK_47 That's the official badge isn't it? For example, https://twitter.com/melbournecity and https://www.facebook.com/melbournecityfc

@KSK_47 Oh, I see what you're getting at. He's standing in front of some sort of backdrop/mural - or projection on to the wall behind him. Is it "Element of the Victorian" and "Cultural Landscape" or something like that? He's not here yet, is he, so it must have been done in the UK? Do we have some sort of "mission" or equivalent over there? Very mysterious.

We must have a mural display somewhere explaining our badge.

What did the hearts stand for again?

Melbourne City have an odd connection with Bolton Wanderers, with Aaron Mooy, Scott Jamieson, Luke Brattan, ex coach Warren Joyce and now Craig Noone have been involved for both clubs.

Noone is a fair bit different to most of the Wingers that Melbourne City possess (and plays a little bit counter to the “City Way”) in that he’s a move the ball forward type of winger.

Firstly, and this might seem like a small thing, he passes the ball forwards.

plot%201-1.png

This is important for a number of reasons, firstly, City were maligned last year for slow movement with the ball once they’d moved it out wide, Noone makes fewer passes of the ball than either of City’s main two wide threats last year, Berenguer and Wales, but he tends to make a lot more forward passes when given the opportunity to make one. Some of this definitely comes down to game plan, but these figures include a seasons at Cardiff where the game plan was much more conducive to on the floor football. This would be a marked change from a City wide player.

The other thing that will likely make him stand out from the current crop of wingers is his propensity to dribble as demonstrated here against Blackburn last year off a corner from Luca Connell

giphy.gif

It’s usually fast, simple dribbles and then an attempt to release the ball, his success rate is ~70% which compares favourably with Berenguer and is better than both Lachlan Wales and Daniel Arzani. The comparison with Arzani isn’t a bad one, because while unlikely to reach the heights the young flyer did when he was at Melbourne City, Arzani and Noone have a few things in common, firstly, they dribble the ball a lot and secondly, they have a high ratio of dribbles to passes.

plot%202-1.png

And while expecting Craig Noone to come in and replace the verve and pace that Arzani brought to the team a season ago is unrealistic, it wouldn’t be hugely surprising to see Noone offer a substantially different look to Melbourne City’s wide play this year.

Would you say he's more like Azarni or Novillo?
