The only sure way of us qualifying is for us to be Premier this current season. As we know, the capacity of Football Australia and APL to make sound decisions is highly questionable.

That also assumes Adelaide win their remaining 5 games. Every point they drop in their last 5 makes our magic number even smaller

IMO aggregating the two seasons is a sound and fair decision. It's up to us now to 1) make sure that we do get the points necessary to qualify for the ACL and 2) whether it's the ACL or the Cup that we end up in to do a lot better than we did last time. If we do collapse on the run in and it's the Cup then we ought to win that. We've got to take AFC competitions seriously from now on.

Then ACL group stage games kick off then too and next A League season will most likely start in October. So in theory the off season should be relatively short between competitive fixtures which is good.
jw1739
Not quite the right thread perhaps, but what happens if the winner of the Australia Cup also qualifies for the AFC Cup by finishing runner-up in the Premiership? Is it the third-placed team in the Premiership or the runner-up in the Australia Cup who takes the second pace in the AFC Cup? 18 minutes ago, MHFC-FAN said: It will be a busy start to the season as we will be playing Aus Cup from around July onwards and hopefully still in the competition in September. I would assume it would be something along those lines...it wouldn't make sense for the runner up of the Aus Cup to suddenly qualify for AFC Cup so 3rd place in the league would likely be the next participant. Nice for the Mariners to finally get back into Asia, it has been quite a while for them!

jw1739
If we're facing a rebuild of the magnitude that now looks possible you can see that we're going to have a tough time getting through the group stage into the knock-outs.

Tommykins
So we end up in Pot 3 - the other Australian team will potentially end up in Pot 4, it's slightly galling that due to how inept we are as a league to prioritise this competition, Japan, Korea, China and Thailand don't have a team as low as Pot 3. Seriously, given that we've won three Premierships in a row, failure to perform in the Group will show just where the A-League is in terms of Asian and World Football. We are the one of the few highly successful teams on that list, probably the only one unbeaten in the CL!! That was what I was made to believe last time around with our CL campaign. In seriousness, I’m not convinced we will get out of any group we draw so just give us some attractive opposition.

I don't particularly agree tbh, or at least not in such a black and white terms. The capped nature of the A League means that its particularly difficult for A League teams to keep their best players the following season and actually have a go at the champions league. Generally, the teams that go to champions league from Australia tumble down the table in that season they play in that comp, from a combination of travel, small squads and that their best players have just departed after winning a trophy. I do agree that the A League does get humbled a little bit in the ACL and shows where we sit relative, but i also think the A League is a deeper and more competitive league than most of the other Asian leagues, it just doesnt have the money-bags clubs that can spend to keep/obtain the very best players in the region, which are obviously what the rest of the teams in that comp are. I agree that Australian clubs do lose either young upcoming players such as Bos, those looking for a better pay check or one additional year. Hence we are at a disadvantage compared to the oil leagues. However there are 47 countries in the Asian Football Confederation and I would say that the A-League is in the top 15 but not in the top 5. jw1739
You get a measure of the AFC's ranking of the leagues and their clubs (rather than the countries) by how many representatives each league and cup send to the ACL.
