He's been poor, Arzani a clear stand out

Yeah looking very casual. Just pointed it out because he's a relatively close mate of a few of my mates and is usually always producing goals whenever I look at our youth teams' scores, etc.

Scored a hattrick in the derby last week too FWIW.

Arzani should be a stand-out. He's in the senior squad.

true, but I feel it would give the players confidence if they were signed to a senior contract and if the squads were bigger the club wouldn't be so hesitant to sign players to a 2 or three year deal, giving these players a chance to develop into senior players

Bit hard for anyone else to stand out when Arzani doesnt pass the ball to his team mates.

Well done Ahmed on a great season

Well done boys...Melbourne City FC will have five of its Championship-winning NYL side in the Young Socceroos training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport as the side prepares for the AFC U-19 Championship 2018 Qualifiers.

Goalkeeper James Delianov, midfielder Nathaniel Atkinson, midfielders Connor Metcalfe and Denis Genreau as well as forward Gerrie Sylaidos have been named in Young Socceroos Head Coach Ufuk Talay’s squad to travel to Canberra.

Cheers #1 fan.

Joshua Cavallo must be the brother of Christian in the NYL squad? Never heard of him.

Guess all the Victards will be wanting to come over to City's youth set up soon enough

Yep you are right tomi that is his brother. I have also heard from a very reliable source that at least 5 victard players wanted to walk out and come to city. The coach only took 2 of them. this Carvllo kid and another winger. success is very attractive isn't it. The NPL squads play Richmaond this weekend so lets see if these players can adapt and they get a win.

Well lets hope the new boys are made to earn their spots in the team first and Citys regular players are not benched in their favour! Maybe with Bates and Athanasiou out with injuries Pala is just needing replacements until they return?? We always seem take in the victreeee rejects.

We should really think about signing 2 youth players concidering 5 players are suspended

Why youth players and why now? We've had the whole season in which we could sign two injury replacement players and a mature-age rookie, but we've done SFA about it and now we could pay the price. It's the arrogance that get's to me...

I do agree with u. We should have signed players in January but now its too late and us supporters and players have suffered because of it

I thought I might bump this thread given that City have stated publicly that developing youth and giving them senior minutes will be a focus moving forward. I haven't watched many NPL matches yet but I try to follow the action by reading the reports and following their games on Twitter. I'm also basing the observations off some Y-league games.

As far as I can tell, there are a few players in the NYL/NPL squad that seem to be closer than others and that could make the leap:

Lucas Portelli - CB - I've read that this kid is rated highly internally. He plays in the NPL most weeks and captained them a few weeks ago. Physically he seems quite developed.

Mitchell Graham - CB - Tends to partner Portelli down back. Another physically mature kid who has captained the NPL team.

Josh Cavallo - CM - I think he is quite a technical player who can play in a few different positions. He did play in a senior friendly last season and manages to get on the score sheet. Pretty aggressive player judging by the amount of cards he receives.

Anthony Lesiotis - CM -  Another one similar to Cavallo. Made the bench in an A-league match last season but didn't play. Tackles pretty hard and is quite aggressive too based on bookings.

Yusuf Ahmed - CF - Not sure if he will make it based on age (21) but he seems to be scoring quite a lot of goals in the NPL. He's got 9 from 13 in the NPL2 East.

Moudi Najjar - CF - He is a scholarship player but is quite young (18) so probably won't get much game time (if any). Like Ahmed, he has been scoring a lot since coming across from WSW. His tally is 11 from 12 in the NPL2 East.

Obviously our other scholarship players Genreau, Pieiras, Delianov and Najjarine are probably a bit closer than these kids but I think we have good talent in our academy.

Najjar looks a real talent, almost a goal a game means he needs to step up another level.

No body saw Atkinson coming and my guess is that something like that will happen again this season. A relative unknown player will climb from no where to the first team. City have their scouts out everywhere and they will just bring a player in who will step up with ease. Some of the players mentioned here will be gone at the end of the Npl season or will only ever play youth.

Yusuf Ahmed is a very, very humble player and all round good personality-- not only that, but he's better than Arzani by a mile, all the youth boys can agree. Unbelievable pace and shot. Unfortunately was injured last or two seasons ago and is patiently waiting for this senior opportunity at City.

So this is officially the worst season ever for the senior npl team. If they can't get a win on sat against Ballarat then they will have lost 7 games in a row. They will be slipping into the relegation zone. I thought the scholarship players that came back last week ( cavallo, the highly rated najjarine, pieras) were supposed to fix the slide but obviously they are overestimated or the opposition is. surely the club will not get relegated to state league 1.

Haven't we been fielding a very young side of 15-16 year olds this season? IIRC I've heard that said by Joe Pala several times.

Dont know if this thread is needed, but its hard trying to find a thread to post info about Youth players on the cusp of breaking into the 1st team. I know we have a Youth section of the forum, but stuff always get lost and never read. Also its better then making individual threads for each youth player where only 1-2 posts are made.

Anyways, heres a good piece on Iannucci

“The kid from Cobram” – Gianluca Iannucci looking to make his mark on Melbourne City

Melbourne City’s academy side made the long trip up the highway to Shepparton this past weekend, shipping two late goals as they played out a 3-3 draw with the Goulburn Valley Suns on a freezing Saturday night.

The three-hour bus ride from the City Football Academy to Shepparton represents one of the longest road trips City’s academy players will undertake during the NPL Victoria season, but for City’s dynamic winger Gianluca Iannucci the clash with the Suns represented a return to his regional roots.

“I started in Cobram in just a little junior association,” Iannucci recounted as he meandered around the newly renovated John McEwan Reserve before kick-off.

“My dad, my uncles, everyone around me played. So, it’s pretty much how I got into the sport.

“It was the Cobram junior soccer association where I played until I was 12-years-old.

“At 12 I played in the Victorian schoolboys’ team, from there I went to the Skillaroos and then at 14 I played here, at the Goulburn Valley Suns.

“I spent a season here, played for the Vic country team and then after that, I went to Melbourne City but was too young. Then I played for Bulleen until 2017, when I played U20s at Melbourne City.”

His resume already dotted with appearances with Victorian representative sides, Iannucci has been a frequent target of praise from City Head of Academy Joe Palatsides in his time in Bundoora and was recently a part of City’s A-League side’s tour of India.

The type of player – such as Daniel Arzani and Ramy Najjarine – that City’s academy is increasingly specialising in producing; Iannucci is an attack-minded winger that relishes the prospect of taking on and beating his defender before cutting the ball inwards towards goal.

The 17-year-old featured off the bench in City’s 2017-18 Y-League grand final loss to Western Sydney Wanderers in January and was dubbed “The Kid from Cobram” by Fox Sports commentator Brenton Speed on social media during the contest.

Gianluca Iannucci is quality… and he was used as a sub! #theKidfromCobram #YLeagueGF

— Brenton Speed (@BrentonSpeed) February 3, 2018

Coming from an area more traditionally seen as a hotbed of Australian Rules rather than football talent, Iannucci described his experience of breaking into junior sides traditionally dominated by players from metropolitan Melbourne.

“It wasn’t overly difficult,” Iannucci explained.

“Just more, coming from regional Victoria, I hadn’t seen the quality from players in Melbourne, so I never really knew what was out there.

“And because the quality wasn’t that high in the country it was easier to stand out. Going to try and get into representative teams I didn’t really think much of it; I didn’t think I was going to make the first representative team I made.

“After that, you sort of get to know all the other players and you sort of get to understand where you fit in with stuff. At the beginning, it was sort of just like, give it a go, and then I started making a few of the representative teams and went from there really.

“I was really shy, so I never really spoke to anyone. So, no one really knew where I was from until I was in the team. By then, I guess they were surprised because not many players from the country do get into these representative teams and play football, everyone’s really from the city.”

Iannucci has now set himself the ambitious task of breaking into the senior A-League side of Warren Joyce as a 17-year-old, even though the youngster faces a rather unique challenge compared to his older teammates.

“Ideally (breaking into the senior side) this year, but, if not, I want to get looked at for next year especially. This year I just sort of want to see the level, just get used to the level that it’s all at when I’m training,” he said.

“Next year I’d really like to be giving them a good shot to make the bench, make the matchday squad.

“They’re (City’s A-League side) training five teams a week. I miss the Wednesday session because I’m at school and then Thursday and Friday I’m with the senior’s boys at the NPL.

“I think eventually everyone wants to go to Europe. Clubs in Europe, big clubs in Europe, big leagues, play for the national team, all that sort of stuff. I just want to play with and around quality all the time.”
