This is what the completed 156,000 seated completed Waverly Park (VFL Park then) was meant to end up looking like: And yes they were dead serious that this was going to be happening for years.

A close relative of mine even wrote an article in the early 1970’s about it being maybe one day being the greatest Stadium in the world.

Best thing the Cain Government ever did was decide the MCG would become the showpiece and showcase venue for footy and sport in Melbourne and funded the re-buliding of the Great Southern Stand. No dis-respect to Waverley and yes a 150,000 seater stadium would've been awesome, but from my experience of Waverley (one game in 1999) but the old MCG, pre-Comm Games, was 1000 times better than Waverley in the end.

Best thing the AFL ever did was sell Waverley and build Docklands, it might have pissed off some people, but it has unearthed an awesome part of the city, which before was totally unused.

Waverly park(aka VFL Park) was actually one of the reasons the VFL had to look to expand it's market nationally etc. It almost bankrupted the league. Terrible planning lead to some key factors that would always ensure Waverly would remain the poorest of poor cousins to the MCG.

Great move to place a purpose built Aussie Rules stadium in the heart of Melbourne's population centre. The SouthEast was then and is still very much(the west/North are catching up) where 'suburban melbourne' lives. Cutting 30-50 mins of most commutes to the footy for a huge segment of the Footballing public would create repeat attendance to VFL(soon to be AFL) matches due to pure convenience. For the people of the South East in the 80's/90's driving and parking was a huge factor in determing whether to attend a game or not. The advent and location of the purpose built stadium also saw huge crowd surges for the tennant clubs ie Hawthorn, StKilda. The league also made money from the gorund during the off-season as the stadium hosted baseball and cricket matches.

However, Waverly park failed for a few reasons. I would not profess to know all of them but;

-IT WAS IN A FUCKEN PARK! by far the largest problem for fans getting to/from the ground was the lack of public transport infrastructure and roads. Clayton and Glen Waverly Stations were just too far away. The league was told BEFORE they bought the land that the government would not re-zone the area for more road access or build the ground a purpose built train station which it needed desperately. They bussed people from the poorly lit, muddy carparks to the ground and relied on existing services(for the first few seasons) to shuttle people from the surrounding stations. Busses often crowded and caught in friday night and weekend Eastern Suburbs gridlock traffic. The AFL never built the designated bus terminal that was mooted either.

-The VFL(AFL) overpaid at every juncture of planning, design and construction. A point the league is still embarassed about to this day.

-Premier John Cain was an MCC member and stymied expansion bids and upgrades. Go figure.

-The ground(pitch) itself was FUCKING HUGE. Much bigger than the G. So the seats on wings/behind the goals were a great distance from the action.

-It was All Ticketed All the time.

-Standing room was greatly reduced during the first redevelopment. (Standing was still the norm for most clubs Hardcore supporters)

-It became exclusively a Hawthorn/StKilda homeground when the idea of the stadium was to have a Neutral, all purpose VFL ground.

-The AFL had to sign it's death warrant to seal the deal with the State Govt to build Docklands.

August 1999 - last AFL game played, Hawthorn v Sydney

That was lights out for VFL park! (A bit of a nostalgic pun.)

Sad for those who had a lot of good(hawthorn)/bad(StKilda), memories there but all in all for those of us on the other side, thank fuck I dont have to get to fucken Mulgrave, trudge through mud and by a reserved seat to watch the Dogs get spanked.

This is probably my favourite stadium in the world: Rasunda Stadium the National Stadium of Sweden and the home of AIK.

I love who its stands are almost vertical, the worst thing is despite many protests the place in being knocked down.

It might not be anything special but I believe this is the newest stadium in top level football in the world. The video shows the construction of the home of the Montreal Impact in the MLS.

Plus here are the highlights of Impacts first game at the stadium last weekend.
