How can you judge if its good news when it doesnt mention how much wage he is on now?

Regardless, how is this not good news?? He is a quality player, integral to our first team and generally very consistant and also versatile. If he does go, now he is under contract the club will earn good money for him. And by the way, I hope he is getting a good wage, he deserves it.

Michael trialled with a number of clubs overseas last off-season. He's sensible enough to realise that his best option at age 25 is to re-sign with the Heart. Any overseas club who does really want him will cough up a reasonable transfer offer, and he knows Heart won't stand in his way. So it's a win-win. Michael has a secure future for the next two years, and if he achieves his ambition then he knows he will go with Heart's blessing and we will pocket a few dollars for our club.

Good work all round I say.

So, at this stage, we have contracted for next season:

Andrew Redmayne;

Michael Marrone, Brendan Hamill, Curtis Good, Aziz Behich;

Jonny Germano, Jason Hoffman, Fred, Nick Kalmar;

Mate Dugandzic, David Williams, Eli Babalj, Adrian Zahra.

13 in total. The next few weeks are going to be interesting...

Because the league has a salary cap, the quality of a player is less relevant than the quality relative to the salary paid.

I'm definitely not disputing his quality, but I'm sure after his overseas trials he has commanded quite the salary. If he is now on another 50k or 100k a season thats 50k-100k that we don't have available for other players.

You could argue that since we weren't using our marquee spots that we have room to fit these contract renewals into the cap by moving someone over to a marquee spot, but given that we werent using the marquee spots till now, I doubt they will be put to use now, especially given that the club's financial position is deteriorating.

Really salary cap management ends up a crucial factor in on field success, the more quality you can fit into your 1.7mil (or w/e it is right now) salary cap the better you are more likely to do obviously.

Anyway, just being an argumentative kunt and providing something to think about so we can avoid a thread consisting of just "great news" being posted in different ways.

PS Great news.

Absolutely awesome news. Marrone is a dead set gun and if it wasn't for our form of late would be in contention to play for the Socceroos against Saudi Arabia IMO.

Awesome signing, lets hope he puts in another solid game on Friday!

... a gun that needs to deliver more accuracy on the final ball. Possession and penetration without a result is pointless (literally)

...and not ignore his winger, be it Worm, Dugandzic, or anyone else.

Moving on, can we deduce from this signing that other contracts discussions are going on?

come on now his not that bad, and shooting isnt really a major aspect of his game anyway seeing as he doesnt take that many shots, and plays in defence.

Actually he's one of our attacking players....along with the other 10 players. The whole team attacks, the whole team defends. Michael provides the attacking width on the right and is an important player in transition. He links defence with attack. Defensively his job is to deny width to the opponents on his side of the park.

His ability to deliver the ball accurately to players in the front third is essential. Opponents need to fear him having a successful shot on goal as the closer that they mark him the more space it creates for other players in the front third and the more options it gives him when he's got the ball in the front third.

Good news.

Would like to see Marrone make quicker decisions when on the ball though. Can hesitate at times and its frustrating watching an unmarked player get picked up whilst he thinks about what he should do. Certainly happened last night and there was a classical example against Visitors when he ended up losing possession as a result. Needs to sort this out if he wants to take his game to the next level.

I agree. Of late Michael has been largely ignoring the obvious pass to his unmarked winger - be he Dugandzic or Worm - and has preferred to turn inside and go himself and add to the congestion in midfield.

But this is a coaching issue, and should have been picked up by the coaching team and addressed.

Mind you, Marrone is not alone in this. Too many of our players try to run with the ball instead of making the obvious pass - Terra, Williams, Thompson are all guilty of this. All adds to the lack of energy efficiency in our team.
