I count goals by the amount of times a player puts the ball across the goal line in competitive matches.

Kind of like how Archie Thompson is the world record holder for most goals scored in a single game even though he scored against American Samoa?

I forgot that goals in competitive games against shit teams don't count.

Does that mean we didn't actually score 10 goals in the last two games?

No you need to count goals within different competitions separately.
That's why the golden boot awards are awarded per competition not as a grand total of the year.
The regular season is different to the FFA Cup. World Cup Qualifiers are different to World Cup Finals.

So if you're talking about the most goals scored in an official match you don't count World Cup Qualifiers just because they're different to World Cup Finals?

No one said anything about him scoring 4 goals in the A-League. You said stated that he'd scored 3 goals for us in total, Jimmy stated that he'd scored 4 in total.

So yeah, if you want to specifically discuss the goals he's scored in the A-League it's 3. But the FFA Cup is a competitive competition so if you're talking about the total amount of goals he's scored for the club you need to take all competetive goals into account.

Lol. You clearly said "for us in total"

4 or 3 really doesn't matter. The bloke is being paid 900k a year and to this date produced very little. Nobody is doubting his capabilities but till now he has been the least productive senior player. (Hughes is not far behind).

Now injury has affected him and that's a part of the game but now he has 20+ games to warrant nearly 2mil invested in him.

Him being named in this weeks squad is very underwhelming as I have zero expectations that things will change.

Time will tell. Hope to be proven wrong.

No I don't really count WC qualifiers against American Samoa as a 'real' record. Yes its technically a record but seriously....

I didn't say Jimmy was wrong to say he scored 4 goals, just depends on how you count total goals. I should have stated he's scored 3 in total for 'A-League games' to be more accurate.

I am happy concede he's scored 4 goals in grand total.

Hyundai A-League preview: Jets v City

11 December 2015

Josh Bennett

Can a free-scoring City continue their red-hot form or will the spluttering Jets bring them crashing back down? A fascinating clash of styles awaits on Sunday afternoon in Newcastle.

MATCH DETAILS

Sunday, 13 December 2015
Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City FC
Hunter Stadium, Newcastle
Kick-Off: 5:00 PM (Local) (5:00 PM (AEDT))

Referee: Chris Beath
Assistant Referee 1: Ryan Gallagher
Assistant Referee 2: Leigh Pigram
Fourth Official: Stephen Lucas

BLUFFER’S GUIDE

These two sides played out a five-goal thriller six weeks ago with the Jets emerging 3-2 winners after staging a remarkable second half comeback at AAMI Park.

But John van’t Schip’s men have since then turned a corner, winning three and drawing one of their past five to jump to fifth spot on the ladder.

City appear to have rediscovered their attacking mojo over the past fortnight with the Cityzens thrashing Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners 5-1 in consecutive weeks.

Conversely, the Jets have failed to register a win in their past five and have slipped outside the top six after a very promising start to the season.

Rookie boss Scott Miller has turned the Novocastrians into a stingy defensive unit (they’ve conceded 9 goals in 9 games) but a lack of quality in the final third has begun to show.

Skipper Nigel Boogaard’s likely return from injury is a big boost for the hosts but Brazilian playmaker Leonardo is again in doubt with an ongoing knee issue though he's been named in the squad.

OPTA DATA

  • Not only have Melbourne City made the most shots at goal (110), but they’ve also got the best shooting accuracy (50.9%) of any team so far this season.

  • Newcastle Jets have faced 137 shots at goal this season, the second most of any team and only one fewer than Central Coast (138).

  • Harry Novillo has an average of 4.2 shots at goal per game, the most of any player by more than a shot (3 – Jamie Maclaren).

  • Milos Trifunovic has scored two headed goals this season, one of only two players to do so (Erik Paartalu).

ROUTE TO GOAL

City midfielder Aaron Mooy is arguably Australia’s best player right now. The 25-year-old has been in scintillating touch to start the season notching four goals and six assists to spark a frustratingly inconsistent City outfit.

Fit again winger Harry Novillo has provided John van’t Schip’s with a new dimension in the front third and four goals in three games suggests the flying Frenchman is edging closer to his best.

Uruguayan striker Bruno Fornaroli is proving to be one of the competition’s premier marksmen after notching seven goals in nine games.

The 28-year-old’s clever runs in behind and ability to hold the ball up in transition will provide Nigel Boogaard and co plenty of problems.

The Jets have really struggled in front of goal in 2015/16, netting just nine goals in nine games and have failed to score more than once in seven of their last eight A-League matches (W2 D3 L3).

Newcastle have lacked creativity in the absence of Leonardo with youngsters Ryan Kitto and Braedyn Crowley thrust into the Jets’ starting lineup in recent weeks.

David Carney remains the hosts’ most productive outlet down the left flank while pacey Serbian winger Enver Alivodic has looked threatening in patches.

Milos Trifunovic has struggled with injury and form in recent times after a bright start to the season, but the Serbian centre forwar did net a match-winning brace last time these two sides met.

WHO’S BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK?

David Carney. The 48-cap Socceroo has been in superb form this season and an unnamed Qatari club is reportedly keen on his services. But Newcastle has denied any approach has been made for the 32 year-old.

FORM LINES

Newcastle Jets: LDDDL

Melbourne City: WLDWW

PREDICTION

Newcastle Jets 1 Melbourne City 3

Melbourne City faces defining A-League clash against Newcastle Jets

December 12, 2015

David Davutovic

MELBOURNE City coach John van’t Schip has labelled Sunday’s visit to Newcastle Jets as a defining game for the club if it wants to win silverware.

City capitulated at home to the Jets six weeks ago, letting a two-goal lead slip, but has had a revival since, winning three and losing just once and scoring 15 goals in the process.

Marquee player Robert Koren returns at the venue he scored a hat-trick at last season to bolster City’s attacking depth, though he’s likely to start on the bench.

Van’t Schip hoped City could exorcise their demons from their last encounter.

“We want to show that was a mistake. We want to go there and get the three points,’’ van’t Schip said.

“There was too much of a difference between the first half and the second half.

“If we want to be a team that is going to go for the top spot, then you have to have a more consistent pathway in your results. That’s why the game against Newcastle is very important.

“We will know on Sunday (if they’re mentally stronger). Then our team has to grow and get results more consecutive. Now we have a poor result, it’s all again the same story.’’

Koren has not played since injuring his calf in the Round 2 loss to Melbourne Victory, hence City will exercise caution with the Slovenian.

With the Bruno Fornaroli, Harry Novillo and Aaron Mooy-led attack starting to click, van’t Schip made no promises to Koren.

“Of course, we’re happy that Robi is available again,’’ he said.

“It’s coming up on almost two months not playing so it’s about seeing how we can start getting him playing.

“He’s made a good impression the last days in the training sessions so we’ll just have to see how and when we can play him in some minutes.

“It’s now about the competition and showing that you really deserve to play. The boys are doing well, it’s now waiting for your chance.

“That’s only good, we need that competition and if Robi wants to get into the team he has to show he’s ready for that.’’

Van’t Schip said the recent 5-1 wins had lifted dressingroom morale but said they were still striving to improve.

“It helps a lot with confidence but we’re still working on a lot of things we feel we have to improve,’’ van’t Schip said.

“We’re very happy with the things we’re doing well, of course scoring goals and creating chances, going forward, playing some exciting football.

“On the other hand we also know we have to work hard on other things that will make us a stronger team.’’

Is it the first time Melbourne City have had the same starting XI 2 weeks in a row this season? It certainly feels like it.

With these players starting I'd like to see Melbourne City's men's team play like our women's team against Newcastle: dominate possession and do the business in front of goal.

Also it turns out Boogaard won't play for Newcastle today, so that might weaken their defence a bit.

First game in absolutely forever which I have actually been able to watch. However, it seems I'm going down with my traditional Christmas flu again so I'm watching this one from bed, so I apologise if I suddenly go quiet for a the whole game - I'll probably have fallen asleep.

Who's had the better of the opening 10 mins?
